How to choose a floor cleaner
Start with the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions, then match the cleaner to the surface and finish. A product suitable for sealed tile or luxury vinyl is not automatically suitable for every hardwood finish. Consumer Reports advises checking the flooring manufacturer’s guidelines before use.
- Surface compatibility: Confirm the label includes your floor type and that the flooring maker permits the formula.
- Mess: Look for relevant evidence on sticky soil and scuffs if those are your main problems.
- Residue: For floors prone to visible streaks, consider testing a small, inconspicuous area first.
- Format and tools: Ready-to-use sprays avoid dilution, while concentrates require following the bottle’s mixing directions. Some sprays need a separate mop.

Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner Spray: best supported for sealed hardwood
Good Housekeeping’s Cleaning Lab named Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner Spray its best overall hardwood-floor cleaner in 2026. It reported that the spray quickly cut through sticky test soil and removed shoe scuffs faster than the other hardwood cleaners in that test. The product is ready to use, needs no dilution, and is applied as a light mist. It dries quickly and requires a separate microfiber pad mop.
Good Housekeeping lists EPA Safer Choice certification for this product. That certification does not replace checking the care guidance for your specific floor and finish.

Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner: for laminate and mixed hard floors
Bob Vila describes this ready-to-use fine-mist cleaner as suitable for laminate, sealed tile, stone and luxury vinyl. In Bob Vila’s repeated household-dirt testing, it left no streaks or residue. Consumer Reports also includes Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner among its recently tested multisurface products. Check your floor manufacturer’s instructions before using it, particularly on stone or a specialty finish.
Murphy Concentrated Wood Cleaner: value-oriented wood-floor option
Good Housekeeping identifies Murphy Concentrated Wood Cleaner as its best-value pick in a hardwood-cleaner roundup. Because it is concentrated, follow the bottle’s dilution and surface directions rather than applying it as an undiluted spray. Consumer Reports lists Murphy Original Formula Oil Soap Wood Cleaner among recently tested products; that is a specifically named product and should not be assumed identical to every Murphy cleaner.

Do you need a special mop?
For Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner Spray, yes: Good Housekeeping specifies a separate microfiber pad mop. Mist the cleaner lightly, then use the mop according to its care instructions. The cleaner does not include a mop as part of the use method described by Good Housekeeping. For other products, follow the product label and your flooring maker’s instructions; the available product evidence does not establish one mop type that suits every cleaner and floor.
