To keep Halloween decorations ready for next season, clean them according to their care instructions, let them dry completely, and pack them so delicate parts are supported rather than crushed. Store textiles in a cool, dark, dry place with ventilation, remove batteries when the product instructions say to, and inspect lights and cords before using them again.
Sort decorations before packing
Take decorations down gently and group them by material and care needs. Keep textiles and costumes apart from fragile props, lights, battery-powered items, and anything with a specific care label. This makes it easier to use suitable packing and storage conditions for each group.

Choose protection based on the item’s shape and fragility: a container should shield decorations without flattening them. A sturdy lidded seasonal storage bin can work for grouped décor, while costumes and other fabric pieces may be better stored flat. Do not pack decorations while damp. For textiles, the Canadian Conservation Institute advises: “Be sure your textiles are clean and dry before you store them in a cool, dark, dry location with good ventilation.” Its guidance is specific to textiles, not a universal rule for plastic props or electronics: Canadian Conservation Institute textile storage guidance.
Pack textiles and fragile decorations without crushing them

Flat storage is appropriate for many textiles. Props, wreaths, and delicate details
Use a container large enough to protect shaped items without flattening them. Wrap or support delicate pieces individually when appropriate; acid-free tissue may suit some textiles or fragile details, but it is not necessary or appropriate for every decoration. Store battery-powered decorations as directed

Handle and store loose batteries according to their type and the battery and product instructions.
Choose a storage place and label containers
Store packed decorations in a location suited to their materials. Keep textiles clean, dry, and ventilated; avoid damp conditions for items that need dry storage. Label containers by contents so you can retrieve a group without rummaging through or damaging other decorations.

Inspect lights before plugging them in next year
Before reuse, check decorative lights, cords, and connections for damage, and follow the product’s rating and instructions.
