Follow the product’s instructions, inspect it before use, and switch it off when you leave home or go to bed. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends turning decoration lights off at those times as general seasonal safety advice—not as a battery-specific test or rule.
What battery power does—and does not—make safer
Battery-operated lights or candles can replace an open flame in a jack-o’-lantern or other Halloween display. Both the CPSC and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommend battery-operated lighting as an alternative to candles. It removes the candle flame from the setup; it does not establish that a particular decoration can safely be left operating unattended.

Official Halloween safety guidance does not provide a category-wide test or guarantee for unattended battery-powered decorations. The safest practical choice is to follow the maker’s instructions and turn the item off when nobody is home or awake to monitor it.

- Read its label and instructions. Check how it should be operated, which batteries it requires, and whether it is intended for indoor or outdoor use. Outdoor suitability depends on the individual product; battery operation alone does not establish weather resistance.
- Inspect it for damage. For decorative light sets, CPSC advises checking for cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Discard damaged sets rather than using them.
- Keep it clear of heat and flames. NFPA says to keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
- Keep escape routes clear. Arrange decorations so exits and paths out of the home are not blocked.
- Check the battery compartment. Do not use an item with a damaged compartment or one that will not close securely. Keep small batteries and products with accessible compartments away from young children.
Why battery type and child access matter
Use only the battery type specified by the manufacturer; the type cannot be inferred from a decoration’s category. Some decorations use button cells, while others use different batteries or built-in power sources.

In 2025, CPSC warned consumers to stop using a specific recolorable light-up ghost statue. Its compartment held three LR44 alkaline button batteries, and the warning cited ingestion risk and violations of the federal button-cell battery standard. That warning concerns the identified product; it does not mean every Halloween decoration contains button cells. Check the exact item and make sure children cannot access its batteries.
When to turn decorations off and how to store them
Turn decorations off when leaving home or going to bed. CPSC’s general holiday-decoration guidance advises switching decoration lights off before leaving or sleeping. This is prudent advice for battery-powered items too, but it is not evidence that all battery-operated decorations have been tested for unattended use.

If a decoration is damaged, its battery compartment will not close securely, or it behaves abnormally, stop using it and consult its instructions or the manufacturer. For seasonal items that will remain unused for a long time, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services recommends removing and safely storing their batteries.

If you want light inside a pumpkin or another display, a battery-operated LED tea light or flameless candle avoids the open flame of a conventional candle. Check the product’s use instructions, battery requirements, condition, and placement rather than assuming all flameless lights have the same capabilities. CPSC and NFPA recommend battery-operated lights or candles as alternatives; neither recommendation is a guarantee that a given model may be left on unattended.

What the safety statistics say—and don’t say
- CPSC estimated an average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments per year over the three years referenced in its 2022 release. The estimate is not specific to battery-operated decorations.
- CPSC reported averages of 5,600 candle-associated fires per year and 1,600 electrical cord- or plug-associated fires per year from 2017 through 2019. These broader estimates do not measure failures of battery-operated Halloween decorations.
- NFPA reported that decorations were the first item ignited in more than 800 home fires each year, with nearly one-third of those fires started by a candle. This supports taking flame and heat precautions; it does not quantify battery-decoration fire risk.
