Specify a glulam beam by its required structural properties, layup, orientation, service-moisture condition, appearance, and connection details—not by width and depth alone. Before erection, verify the delivered member against the construction documents, keep it off wet ground, protect it from weather and dirt, and seal every field-cut end as required by the project.
The eight tips below align design decisions with field handling. They draw on APA guidance in the Glulam Product Guide (X440, revised June 2023), Glulam Connection Details (T300, revised June 2023), and APA’s residential construction guide (X450, revised April 2023). The responsible design professional and the glulam manufacturer remain the authorities for member sizing, connections, lifting, drilling, finishes, and local code compliance.

A callout such as “5-1/8 by 18 inches” describes geometry but does not identify whether the member can resist the project’s bending, shear, compression, tension, or deflection demands. A complete specification states the design values and the product characteristics that produce them.
Include these items in the specification
- Required allowable or factored design properties for the governing load cases, with the design standard and load duration assumptions.
- Species or species combination and the required layup or stress combination.
- Balanced or unbalanced layup, where the design depends on the distinction.
- Beam orientation: horizontal or vertical laminations, and which face is intended to be exposed.
- Appearance classification, including any limits on permitted knots, repairs, or surface characteristics.
- Service-moisture condition and adhesive type appropriate to that condition.
- Applicable product standard, certification, mill identification, and any proof-loaded end-joint requirement.
- Connection geometry, bearing conditions, camber or straightness requirements, and restrictions on field modifications.
These details allow a supplier to quote an equivalent product and allow the installer to reject a member that matches the dimensions but not the engineering requirements.

Use the trademark or grade stamp as a cross-check
Glulam trademark information can identify the stress combination and layup, species, appearance classification, balanced or unbalanced configuration, applicable standards, producing mill, and whether end joints were proof loaded. Read the stamp against the schedule and submittal, rather than treating a familiar grade name as a substitute for the project specification.
2. Confirm orientation and service-moisture conditions
Lamination direction changes the tabulated properties. APA distinguishes vertically laminated members from the more typical horizontally laminated arrangement; the two orientations do not automatically share the same stress values. Show the intended orientation on drawings and preserve it through shipping, storage, and erection.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Decide whether the member is dry- or wet-service
APA guidance calls for wet-service adhesives when glulam is preservative treated or when the in-service moisture content will be at or above 16 percent. That threshold describes the expected service condition, not a permission to leave an unprotected beam exposed during construction. If a member will be in a humid enclosure, near repeated wetting, or in an exterior or partially exposed assembly, the designer must identify the appropriate adhesive and protection system before fabrication.
Coordinate moisture assumptions with the finish schedule, ventilation, enclosure timing, and any preservative treatment. A beam specified for dry service can be unsuitable if the building sequence or final exposure produces sustained higher moisture.
3. Coordinate the member with actual loads and spans
There is no universal “glulam span” that can be selected safely from a rule of thumb. Span, tributary width, support restraint, concentrated loads, lateral stability, vibration, fire design, camber, and deflection limits all affect the required member. APA design guides provide load information and tables, but those tables still have to be applied to the project’s conditions.

A practical design-coordination sequence
- Define actions. List dead, live, snow, wind, seismic, equipment, impact, and construction loads that reach the beam. Identify point loads and load combinations rather than spreading them by assumption.
- Confirm supports. Document bearing length, support material, continuity, bracing, uplift restraint, and any intermediate hangers or posts.
- Check strength and serviceability. The engineer should check bending, shear, compression perpendicular to grain, stability, vibration, and total and live-load deflection using the governing code.
- Resolve geometry. Set the beam elevation, camber if required, penetrations, notches, fire-protection thickness, and clearance for connectors before fabrication.
- Issue a coordinated schedule. Give the supplier the final grade, layup, orientation, dimensions, appearance, end conditions, and connection information, including revisions and approval status.
Know what “stock size” means
APA reports the following stock ranges. They are reported product ranges, not a guarantee of local inventory or a substitute for design.
| Characteristic | APA-reported range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Stock widths | 3-1/8, 3-1/2, 5-1/8, 5-1/2, and 6-3/4 inches | Use only after confirming the required design values and connection fit. |
| Stock depths | 6 to 36 inches | Select depth from the engineered span and deflection checks. |
| Custom members | Available for some applications | Confirm manufacturing capability, lead time, transport limits, and the approved shop drawings. |
Do not enlarge a stock member, reduce it, or substitute a nearby size without a documented design review. A dimensional change can alter stiffness, connection capacity, fire rating, and appearance.
4. Detail connections for a complete load path and movement
A glulam beam is only as reliable as the path that transfers forces into and out of it. APA connection guidance emphasizes transferring design loads without localized stress concentrations, allowing for moisture-related expansion and contraction, avoiding eccentricity, and protecting end grain from moisture.
Questions the connection detail must answer
- Where does each reaction, point load, uplift force, and lateral force enter the member?
- How are bearing, shear, tension perpendicular to grain, and splitting checked at the connection?
- Does the hardware introduce eccentricity that twists the beam or concentrates stress?
- Can the timber move as its moisture content changes without crushing fasteners, tearing finishes, or binding hardware?
- How is the end grain shielded from rain, condensation, capillary water, and wet masonry?
- What tolerances are allowed for fabrication and erection, and which holes or cuts are prohibited in the field?
Use the engineer’s connection detail and the hardware manufacturer’s installation instructions. Do not choose a hanger, bolt group, knife plate, notch, or field-drilled hole by appearance or by a generic internet detail. If site conditions differ from the drawings, stop and obtain a revised detail before loading the member.
5. Verify the delivered member before installation
Receiving inspection is the last inexpensive opportunity to catch a wrong grade, orientation, or appearance class. Compare the physical member and its identification with the approved schedule before it is lifted into a location where replacement becomes disruptive.

Receiving checklist
- Match the piece mark, dimensions, camber, end cuts, holes, notches, and connection hardware to the latest approved shop drawings.
- Read the trademark or grade stamp and confirm species, stress combination, layup, appearance classification, orientation, standard, mill, and certification information.
- Confirm that preservative treatment or other specified treatment is present and compatible with the adhesive and finish requirements.
- Look for crushing, impact damage, delamination, open joints, excessive checking, contamination, standing water, and unapproved field repairs.
- Photograph and record discrepancies, isolate questionable members, and notify the supplier and design professional before installation.
A beam that is structurally adequate but has the wrong appearance classification can still fail the contract requirements. Conversely, a superficial check or small seasoning check does not by itself establish structural failure; disposition belongs to the responsible professional and manufacturer.
6. Protect glulam during transport and storage
Glulam can be protected with sealants, primers, or wrapping, but protection must be planned around ventilation and the final coating system. APA recommends shielding members from moisture, dirt, and sunlight and storing them on blocking on level, well-drained ground where feasible.
Storage practices that prevent avoidable damage
- Place beams on straight, adequately sized blocking so they remain level and clear of soil, puddles, and traffic.
- Keep blocking aligned vertically when stacking members to avoid inducing a permanent bend.
- Use a breathable cover or the specified wrapping system; keep the cover off the ground and arrange it so water drains away.
- Do not trap wet packaging against the timber or seal a visibly wet member without the manufacturer’s approval.
- Protect exposed ends and connection zones first, because end grain and cut surfaces absorb water quickly.
- Keep forklifts, straps, chains, and dunnage from gouging finished faces; use padded contact points where the appearance grade requires them.
- Reinspect after storms, snow, or schedule delays and correct ponding, displaced covers, or saturated blocking.
Storage protection is not a replacement for enclosure. Plan the erection sequence so the building can be dried and weather-tightened before prolonged exposure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Seal every field-cut end
APA recommends applying end sealant after trimming to help limit moisture penetration and checking. Treat this as a specified operation, not as an optional touch-up performed months later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesField-cut procedure
- Verify that the cut is permitted by the approved detail and that removing material will not alter a connection, bearing length, camber, or fire requirement.
- Make the cut cleanly with equipment that does not burn, splinter, or crush the laminations.
- Remove loose fibers and dust; do not round over or bevel the end unless the detail requires it.
- Apply the approved end sealant to the entire freshly cut surface, including corners and small exposed gaps, at the coverage and temperature stated by the product instructions.
- Allow the sealant to cure before wrapping, coating, or placing the member where the end can be wetted.
- Record the product and location when the project quality plan requires traceability.
Use the project specification and manufacturer’s requirements for the actual sealant and finish. End sealant does not repair a split, delamination, or incorrectly cut connection; report those conditions instead of coating over them.

8. Manage moisture and appearance during installation
Glulam leaves the plant at a manufacturing moisture condition and may adjust as the building environment changes. APA notes that this adjustment can produce seasoning checks. Proper handling and gradual adjustment reduce avoidable distress, but no responsible specification can promise that checks will never occur.
Separate normal adjustment from damage
Small, stable surface checks can develop as moisture leaves the outer laminations. A check that widens rapidly, follows a connection, exposes a deep split, accompanies delamination, or appears with crushing or impact damage requires professional evaluation. Do not fill, bolt, plane, or paint a suspect defect before it is documented and assessed.
Coordinate the installation environment
- Keep the member protected until the roof, enclosure, and drainage details are functioning.
- Avoid directing heaters or intense sun at one face of a beam while the opposite face remains damp; uneven drying increases stress.
- Maintain the specified ventilation and avoid storing wet materials against finished glulam.
- Install flashings, membranes, and end-grain protection promptly where the design relies on them.
- Use padded slings and planned pick points so lifting does not bruise edges or twist a long member.
- After installation, inspect visible faces, bearing zones, ends, and connections before concealment.
Appearance is part of performance for exposed glulam. Agree in advance on the acceptable appearance class, the repair procedure, and who decides whether a field condition is cosmetic or structural.
Project handoff: documents to keep with the beam schedule
Keep the approved structural drawings, calculations or design criteria, supplier submittal, grade-stamp records, connection details, treatment certificates, storage inspection notes, field-cut and sealing records, and nonconformance dispositions together. This record lets the contractor, inspector, and design professional verify that the installed member is the member that was designed.
Local building-code editions, product availability, and project-specific requirements can change the selection. Have the responsible design professional confirm the final specification and any deviation before fabrication or installation.
