Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the illustrated offset method, set the tenon/cope bit so the top of the bit is 13/16 inch above the router table, and align the fence with the edge of the bit’s bearing. Then tune the matching groove/round-over bit against a test cut in scrap before routing the project parts. That 13/16-inch setting comes from WOOD Magazine’s specific setup; it is not a universal height for every bit set.
What the offset setup changes
Instead of centering the grooves and tenons, the method raises the cutter. The resulting tenon sits back of center, leaving a small fillet on the front face. The matched cutters divide the work: the groove/round-over bit cuts the panel groove and the rail-and-stile edge profile, while the tenon/cope bit forms the tenon on rail ends and copes them to fit the stiles. WOOD Magazine describes the illustrated method here.
Set the tenon/cope bit and cut stile ends
- Install the tenon/cope bit in the router table. Raise it until the top of the bit is 13/16 inch from the table. This is the setting in WOOD Magazine’s illustrated method, not a specification established for every cutter set.
- Align the fence with the edge of the bit’s bearing.
- Rout the stile ends facedown. Back each cut with scrap to help prevent tear-out.
Match the groove/round-over bit to the tenon
- Change to the groove/round-over bit.
- Raise the cutter until it aligns with the tenon on a stile.
- Make a test groove/round-over cut in scrap and check how it fits with a stile. Adjust the cutter setup as needed until the fit is right.
- Once the test fit is satisfactory, rout the workpieces facedown.
Check the bits and router table before cutting
The cited setup does not identify a bit brand or model, shank size, or a general compatibility range. Before relying on the 13/16-inch setting, confirm that your cutters have matching profiles and are suitable for your stock, shank, and router table. The article does not specify guarding, feed direction, speed limits, cutter installation, or personal protective equipment; follow the instructions supplied by the router, table, and bit manufacturers for those details.

- Shaker Rail & Stile Cutter Router Bit Set of 2: A distinctive chamfered edge makes our rail and stile router bits an excellent candidate for Shaker-style doors and drawers.
- Ensures Perfect Fit: This style and rail router bit cut tight-fitting cope and stick joints for shaker-style door frames. Our cabinet making router bits are bearing-guided to prevent dips and to ensure a perfect fit.
- High-Grade Carbide: Sturdy 1/2" shanks and precision balancing ensure stability while routing, while the high-grade carbide provides a long cutting life.
- Set up and Make the Cope Cuts: You can make the profile/groove cuts in the rail and style router bit set first, but we recommend that you start with the cope cuts. That way, the long edges are still flat and square, and you can use a flat-edged backer board to prevent tear-out at the end of the cut.
- Instructions to Follow for Shaker Cabinet Doors: Use only in a table-mounted router at reduced RPMs. Do not bottom out router bits in your router collet. Allow at least a 1/8" gap between the bottom of the bit shank and the bottom of the router collet. Keep hands clear of the router bit. Wear eye protection at all times.
