A battery-free wireless wall switch is only half of a lighting-control installation. The switch harvests a small amount of energy from the button press and transmits a radio command; a separately powered receiver must hear that command and switch or dim the light. In a practical retrofit, the receiver is wired to the lighting circuit while the switch can be mounted without a control cable or replacement battery.
Choose the transmitter and receiver as a compatible pair, confirm the radio frequency for your country, and verify that the receiver supports the exact lamp, LED driver, voltage and control function you need. The following method covers a simple switch-and-receiver retrofit as well as a larger system with occupancy, daylight and commissioning controls.

What “battery-free wireless lighting control” actually includes
The switch is an energy harvester and transmitter
In a conventional wall control, pressing the paddle changes an electrical contact and the wiring carries the command to a relay, dimmer or lighting load. A battery-free wireless switch replaces that control wire with a very short burst of harvested energy. EnOcean explains that “the only energy source it needs is the press of a button.” The mechanical movement drives a micro-generator, which powers the switch electronics long enough to send a radio telegram.
That telegram does not power the lamp. It identifies a button event or control value for a receiver. Because the energy is generated at the moment of the press, there is no battery compartment to service and no low-voltage cable running back to a controller. The switch still needs a suitable mounting surface and a correctly commissioned receiver.

The line-powered receiver is the other half
The receiver is connected to the building’s electrical supply and to the lighting circuit. It listens for the transmitter’s radio message, checks that the message belongs to a paired control, and then changes the load state according to its design. Depending on the model, that may mean on/off switching, dimming, or a control signal for an LED driver.
A bare battery-free transmitter therefore is not a complete lighting solution. If no compatible receiver is installed, pressing it may produce a radio message but the fixture will not respond. Dimming is especially dependent on the receiver: the Leviton WSS0S-series instructions describe the press-powered micro-generator and specifically note that an appropriate receiver is required for dimming.
Choose the right system architecture
Start by deciding whether the project is a single-room retrofit or a coordinated lighting-control installation. The physical switch may look similar in both cases, but the receiver, sensors and commissioning process can be very different.
| Decision area | Simple switch-and-receiver retrofit | Broader LED control system |
|---|---|---|
| Core hardware | One battery-free transmitter and one line-powered receiver connected to the light | LED fixture or zone controllers plus switches, occupancy sensors and light-level sensors as required |
| Primary function | Manual on/off, or dimming when the receiver and load support it | Manual control combined with schedules, occupancy response or daylight-based adjustment |
| Planning effort | Confirm pair compatibility, wiring and load rating | Map zones, sensor coverage, control rules and commissioning workflow |
| Best fit | Retrofit rooms where adding a control cable is disruptive | Offices, schools, retail areas and other projects needing coordinated LED behavior |
| Tools | Manufacturer pairing procedure and electrical test equipment | System commissioning software or a dedicated commissioning tool may be required |
EnOcean’s North American LED materials describe controllers, switches, occupancy and light-level sensors, and Navigan remote commissioning software as parts of a broader approach. That material was announced in February 2015, so treat it as a description of the system concept rather than proof that every named model or program is currently sold. Confirm present-day availability with the manufacturer or an authorized distributor.

Compatibility checks to complete before ordering
Match the transmitter to the receiver
Wireless devices that use the same general technology are not automatically interchangeable. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list, pairing method and supported message type for the exact transmitter and receiver models. A receiver may accept only a defined family of self-powered switches, or it may need a commissioning step before it will react to a button.
Also verify whether one receiver supports multiple transmitters, whether a transmitter can control multiple receivers, and how scenes or groups are created. These details determine whether a second wall station can be added later without replacing the first installation.
Confirm the radio frequency and region
Radio frequency is a regional requirement, not a cosmetic specification. The EnOcean Alliance lists Magnum Energy M9-ILS2 as a 902 MHz receiver for EnOcean-enabled self-powered lighting products in the United States and Canada. A device intended for that band should not be assumed suitable in a country using another allocation. Select the version approved for the installation location and follow local radio-certification rules.
Do not mix a transmitter and receiver solely because their product names look similar. Record the market or frequency variant on the project schedule, especially when equipment is being purchased by different contractors.

Check the lamp, driver and electrical load
Read the receiver’s current technical documentation for the exact load category and wiring limits. The M9-ILS2 listing names incandescent, fluorescent and low-voltage lighting compatibility and describes retrofit use in a standard single-gang wall box. Those categories do not by themselves establish compatibility with every LED lamp, electronic ballast or low-voltage driver. Confirm voltage, minimum and maximum load, inrush behavior, neutral requirements, driver type and any restrictions on mixed loads.
LED problems often arise when a receiver is rated for a broad lamp category but the specific driver behaves differently at low power. For dimming, verify both the receiver’s dimming method and the driver or fixture’s accepted control range. A receiver that can send a dimming command is not proof that every connected LED will dim smoothly.
Decide whether you need switching or dimming
Write the required behavior in the specification: simple on/off, raise/lower dimming, a preset level, or scene control. Select a receiver that explicitly supports that behavior. If the project only requires switching, do not pay for a dimmer that introduces a load-compatibility issue. If dimming is required, test the actual fixture and driver, not just a sample lamp from a different batch.

Use those statements as an example of the information a receiver listing should provide: radio region, installation format, control type and load categories. Before installation, obtain the current manufacturer’s wiring diagram, terminal ratings, enclosure requirements and approved load list. Product listings can change, and a listing summary is not a substitute for the latest installation instructions.
Leviton WSS0S-series transmitter instructions
The WSS0S-series instruction sheet illustrates the transmitter side of the system. Pressing the switch powers a micro-generator, which sends a wireless command to a receiver. The same instructions make clear that dimming needs an appropriate receiver. This is the key distinction between a self-powered wall control and a complete lighting-control assembly.
Installation procedure for a retrofit
- Survey the existing circuit. Identify the lighting load, supply voltage, box size, conductors and switching arrangement. Photograph or label conductors before disconnecting anything. Determine whether the receiver will be installed at the wall box, near the fixture or in another enclosure allowed by its instructions.
- Define the required operation. Record whether the room needs on/off, dimming, a preset level or multiple control points. List the fixture and driver model numbers so the receiver manufacturer can confirm compatibility.
- Select the regional radio version. Match the transmitter and receiver frequency to the country of installation. For a United States or Canada project using the cited EnOcean example, the relevant listing is 902 MHz; do not generalize that frequency to other regions.
- Choose a documented pair. Confirm that the exact transmitter can be learned by the exact receiver and note the pairing sequence. Check whether additional switches or sensors can be added later.
- De-energize and verify. Turn off the circuit at the breaker, apply the site’s lockout procedure, and test for absence of voltage with an approved tester. If the box, conductors or load do not match the receiver instructions, stop and obtain qualified electrical assistance.
- Wire the line-powered receiver. Follow the current manufacturer diagram exactly. Do not infer terminal functions from another model, and do not assume that a neutral conductor is or is not required. Keep grounding, enclosure fill and conductor preparation compliant with the applicable electrical code.
- Mount the battery-free switch. Install it where users can press it naturally and where the mounting surface is suitable. Because no control cable is required, the location can often be changed more easily than with a wired switch, but the radio path still needs to be considered.
- Pair and commission. Apply power, put the receiver into its documented learn mode, and press the transmitter as instructed. If the system supports groups or scenes, assign them only after a single-device test succeeds. Record the receiver address, switch location and programmed function for the handover file.
- Test every operating state. Test repeated on/off presses, the manual override, the full dimming range if applicable, power restoration and any connected sensors. Observe the fixture for delayed response, flicker, audible noise or failure to reach the commanded level.
- Close out the installation. Replace covers, update the panel and room schedules, and leave the owner the pairing information, load limits and troubleshooting contact. Do not conceal a receiver where future service access is impossible.
Adding occupancy and daylight control
A larger installation can use the battery-free switch as one input among several. Occupancy sensors can request lights when a space is used, while light-level sensors can reduce electric light when daylight is sufficient. LED fixture or zone controllers then apply the programmed response. The design must define priority when inputs disagree—for example, whether a manual “off” command temporarily overrides an occupancy request.

Troubleshooting by symptom
No response from the light
- Confirm that the receiver has line power and that the breaker and protective devices are on.
- Check that the transmitter and receiver are the same regional version and are actually paired.
- Repeat the documented learn process, then test from the receiver’s manual override if one is provided.
- Inspect the load wiring and verify that the fixture is functional when connected according to the receiver instructions.
On/off works but dimming does not
- Verify that the installed receiver is a dimming model rather than an on/off relay.
- Confirm that the transmitter’s dimming gesture is supported by that receiver.
- Check the LED driver or ballast for the receiver’s required control method, minimum load and dimming range.
- Test with the actual fixture at several levels; do not assume a successful on/off test proves dimming compatibility.
Operation is intermittent
- Check for a regional frequency mismatch or an incomplete pairing.
- Look for metal enclosures, dense construction materials or equipment positioned between the switch and receiver that could weaken the radio path.
- Confirm that the switch is firmly mounted and that each press produces a complete mechanical stroke.
- Review the receiver’s power and load connections for loose conductors or an overload condition, with the circuit de-energized before inspection.
The light behaves unexpectedly after a power outage
Read the receiver documentation for its power-restoration state. Some products return to a defined state, while others remember the previous state. Test this behavior during commissioning and document it so occupants are not surprised.
Safety, code and maintenance responsibilities
Electrical installation must follow the codes and regulations that apply to the building and jurisdiction. The Leviton instructions advise using the products under relevant electrical requirements and consulting an electrician when the installer is unsure. That advice is particularly important when changing a multi-way circuit, working in an unfamiliar enclosure or connecting a high-inrush LED driver.
Battery-free does not mean maintenance-free. Inspect the receiver and fixture during normal electrical maintenance, check for heat or discoloration, and keep the pairing and load documentation available. The switch avoids battery replacement, but a damaged mechanism, altered radio environment or replaced LED driver can still require service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProject checklist
- Transmitter and receiver are a documented compatible pair.
- Radio frequency is approved for the installation region.
- Receiver voltage, wiring and enclosure requirements match the site.
- Fixture, ballast or LED driver is within the receiver’s stated load limits.
- Required function—on/off, dimming or scenes—is explicitly supported.
- Manual override and power-restoration behavior have been tested.
- Occupancy, daylight and commissioning needs are defined for larger zones.
- Pairing records, wiring information and maintenance instructions are included in handover documents.
Bottom line
The line-powered receiver makes battery-free wireless lighting practical: the wall switch supplies its own brief transmission energy, while the receiver supplies the electrical switching or dimming function. Treat the installation as a matched system, not as a standalone wireless button. Verify regional frequency, load and driver compatibility, follow the current wiring instructions, and commission every control state before the project is handed over.
