To use an Apple TV as an Apple Home hub, sign it in with the Apple Account that manages your Home, then assign it to a room: on Apple TV, open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room and choose an existing room or create one. Confirm the result in the Home app under Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges.
A home hub enables remote access, automations, notifications and shared household control. It can also support Matter accessories and, when the Apple TV model includes Thread networking, Thread-based Matter devices.

Apple TV models and Apple Home capabilities are not interchangeable. For current setups, an Apple TV 4K running the latest available tvOS is the safest choice. Check the exact model at Settings > General > About before troubleshooting or buying hardware.
- The Apple TV is connected to power and your home network.
- It is updated to the latest available tvOS.
- You are the Home owner. Invited residents may control a Home but may not be able to add an Apple TV as its hub.
- The Apple TV uses the Apple Account associated with the Home.
- Your iPhone or iPad has the Home app and Bluetooth is enabled for accessory pairing.
- iCloud Home access is enabled; Apple’s troubleshooting guidance may also require iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication.
- You have the HomeKit or Matter setup code for each accessory.
For Thread Matter accessories, you also need a Thread-enabled home hub or a compatible third-party Thread border router. Apple lists the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model as Thread-enabled. Confirm the specification for any other model rather than assuming that every Apple TV 4K supports Thread. See Apple’s Thread networking guidance.

What the Apple TV hub does
An Apple TV acting as a home hub coordinates your Apple Home setup when you are away from home, runs automations and helps deliver notifications. It also supports shared control for people you invite to the Home. With the appropriate model and network support, it participates in the Thread infrastructure used by compatible accessories.
These are separate roles, however. An Apple Home hub provides Apple Home features such as remote access and automations. A Thread border router connects a Thread mesh to your IP network. A Matter controller manages Matter accessories. Some Apple and third-party products combine two or all three functions, but a standalone Thread border router is not automatically a replacement for every Apple Home hub function.

Set up the Apple TV as your home hub
1. Update tvOS
On Apple TV, open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. Menu wording can vary slightly by tvOS version. Install the available update before pairing accessories or diagnosing hub problems. Update your iPhone or iPad and any HomePod devices as well.
2. Sign in with the Home’s Apple Account
Check the account on the Apple TV under Settings > Users and Accounts. Some tvOS versions label this area Profiles and Accounts. The Apple TV’s default user should be the Apple Account associated with the Home you manage.

If the Apple TV is signed in with another household member’s account, switch the default user or sign out and use the Home owner’s account. An Apple TV can be on the same network and still fail to appear in the correct Home if its account identity is wrong.
3. Assign the Apple TV to a room
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Select AirPlay and Apple Home.
- Select Room.
- Choose an existing room, or select Add New Room.
- If you create a room, follow the prompts to name it.
Assigning the Apple TV to a room adds it to that Home and makes it available as a home hub. Apple documents this process in its home hub setup guide.
4. Verify hub status in the Home app
- Open the Home app on an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- Select the More button.
- Choose Home Settings.
- Select Home Hubs & Bridges.
The active hub appears at the top. If you have several Apple TVs or HomePods, Apple Home can select the active hub automatically. You can turn off Automatic Selection to choose a preferred hub manually, but manual selection is not guaranteed to improve reliability: network layout, Thread coverage, software versions and accessory location can all matter.
Add HomeKit and Matter accessories
Pair accessories from the Home app on an iPhone or iPad, not from the Apple TV. Apple says accessories cannot be added to Home from a Mac. Bluetooth should be enabled during pairing. Follow Apple’s accessory setup instructions for the device type.

HomeKit accessory
- Open Home and select Add or Add Accessory.
- Scan the HomeKit QR code, or enter the eight-digit Apple Home setup code.
- If prompted to allow the accessory to join the network, select Allow.
- Assign the accessory to a room.
- Give it a clear name, such as “Front Door Light” or “Workshop Plug.”
- Select Continue, then Done.
Matter accessory
- Open Home > Add > Add Accessory on the iPhone or iPad.
- Scan the Matter QR code or enter its 11- or 21-digit Matter pairing code.
- For a device already paired with another platform, select More Options and choose the accessory when it appears.
- Allow network access if prompted, then assign and name the accessory.
A Thread Matter device needs a Thread-enabled hub or compatible border router for full operation in Apple Home. Apple’s newer guidance also says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can locally add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, but Apple recommends a hub for the best Home experience, including remote access and automation support. See Apple’s Matter pairing guidance.
Choose the right Apple TV 4K configuration
| Configuration | Best suited to | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K Wi‑Fi | Homes with reliable Wi‑Fi that do not need Ethernet or Thread networking from the Apple TV | Apple’s current product page lists 64GB storage. Confirm the exact model specification before buying for Thread accessories. |
| Apple TV 4K Wi‑Fi + Ethernet | Homes that want wired networking or a Thread-capable Apple TV for Thread Matter devices | Apple lists Gigabit Ethernet, 128GB storage and Thread networking for the current configuration. |
Ethernet can be useful, but it is not a guarantee of better Home reliability. If an accessory will not pair while the active Apple TV is connected by Ethernet, Apple recommends temporarily connecting the Apple TV to Wi‑Fi and putting the iPhone or iPad on the same Wi‑Fi network. Treat that as a diagnostic step, not evidence that Ethernet is generally unsupported.

| Symptom | First checks and recovery |
|---|---|
| Apple TV does not appear in Home | Confirm you are the Home owner, verify the Apple Account and default user, assign the Apple TV to a room again, update both devices, restart the Apple TV, and confirm power and network access. Check iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication, then revisit Home Hubs & Bridges. |
| “Home Hub Required” | Restart the active hub, update it, retry from the iPhone or iPad that created the Home, and ensure the pairing device and Apple TV use the same network. If the Apple TV uses Ethernet, temporarily test Wi‑Fi. |
| “Software Update Required” | Update the active Apple TV or HomePod and the iPhone or iPad, then retry pairing. |
| “Thread Border Router Required” | Confirm that the active Apple TV model is Thread-enabled, or add a compatible Thread border router. A regular Apple TV hub without Thread support is not sufficient for a Thread-based accessory. |
| “No Response” for one brand or accessory | Check the manufacturer’s app for firmware updates, restart the accessory and its bridge, verify Bluetooth where relevant, and follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure before removing and re-adding it. For Thread devices, power-cycle the accessory and allow the network time to stabilize. |
| “No Response” across several brands | Update Apple devices, close and reopen Home, check the local Wi‑Fi connection, then restart accessories, bridges, Apple TVs, HomePods, router and modem in a controlled order. Review or temporarily disable VPNs and third-party network-security software. |
| Matter accessory will not pair | Check the Matter code, use an iPhone or iPad rather than a Mac, enable Bluetooth, update the accessory through its manufacturer app, and confirm the required Apple Home hub or Thread capability. |
For Thread troubleshooting, Apple recommends disconnecting a third-party Thread accessory from power for five minutes, reconnecting it and allowing up to ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize. Battery-powered accessories may also need a manufacturer firmware update. Mains-powered Thread products can sometimes serve as router nodes, while battery-powered products generally operate as endpoint devices; follow the accessory maker’s specifications. Eve describes this distinction for products such as Eve Energy.

HomePod mini
A HomePod mini automatically becomes a home hub when set up. It is a better fit if you want a compact Siri speaker, room audio and Thread support without buying a streaming box. It is not the right choice if you specifically want television streaming, Ethernet or on-screen Home controls. See Apple’s HomePod mini information.

Third-party Matter and Thread hubs
A third-party hub may make sense if you already use an ecosystem such as Aqara or want Matter devices available across multiple platforms. For example, Aqara positions its Hub M3 as a Matter controller for Matter-over-Thread accessories in its ecosystem.
Do not assume that such a hub replaces an Apple TV for every Apple Home function. Check separately whether the product acts as a Matter controller, Thread border router and Apple Home hub, and whether the exact accessory is supported.
Important limitations
- Do not assume that every historic Apple TV model supports current Home, Matter or Thread features.
- Not every Apple TV 4K configuration has the same Thread or networking specification.
- An Apple TV listed in Home may not be the active hub when multiple hubs are present.
- An iPad should not be treated as a current replacement hub: Apple’s latest troubleshooting guidance says iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest version of Apple Home.
- Apple TV and HomePod availability can vary by country or region.
If the Apple TV is unplugged or loses power, it cannot provide hub functions while offline. With multiple hubs, another available hub may become active; always check Home Hubs & Bridges rather than assuming which device Apple Home selected.
