Verdict: The Ecovacs Goat A1600 RTK looks like a capable, relatively affordable wire-free robotic mower for medium-to-large gardens. Its navigation, obstacle detection, mapping, charging speed and cut quality were all impressive in the available May 2025 review. But “like Husqvarna, only cheaper” is too broad: the price comparison depends on the exact Husqvarna model, country, installation package and lawn capacity. The Goat A1600 RTK is a promising value alternative, not a universal substitute for Husqvarna’s Automower range.

Which Ecovacs mower is this?

This is a review of the Ecovacs Goat A1600 RTK, not Ecovacs robotic mowers generally. The model combines an RTK positioning system with an outdoor reference station, two mowing discs, the Ecovacs Home app, TruEdge edge mowing and AIVI 3D obstacle avoidance supported by 3D ToF and LiDAR-assisted navigation.

The “cheaper than Husqvarna” claim comes from a review published on May 19, 2025, which reported a European recommended price of €1,499 and a three-year warranty. Those figures are historical European review data, not a verified current US price or warranty. Check the regional Ecovacs site before buying.

RTK navigation: wire-free, but not installation-free

RTK is a high-precision satellite-positioning method. In practical terms, it can let the mower navigate virtual boundaries without burying a traditional perimeter wire. That does not mean the installation is entirely effortless.

  • Take Back Your Weekends with Fully Automated Mowing - No more pushing heavy mowers or spending hours maintaining your lawn. GOAT O1000 RTK automatically follows customized mowing schedules, keeping your grass consistently healthy and neatly trimmed while you relax or spend time with family.

The Goat A1600 RTK requires an RTK reference station, which must be positioned in an open location with a useful view of the sky. Dense trees, tall buildings, fences and narrow passages can interfere with satellite reception or reduce the reliability of wire-free navigation. A garden with a clear, elevated installation point is a much better candidate than one enclosed by buildings and mature tree cover.

Before ordering, identify where both the charging station and reference station could go. A mower that is technically wire-free can still be a poor fit if its reference station cannot maintain a dependable signal across the lawn.

Setup and mapping

The reported first-use process is relatively straightforward:

  1. Position the charging station.
  2. Install the RTK reference station in an open area.
  3. Pair the mower using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  4. Open the Ecovacs Home app.
  5. Allow the mower to map the garden.
  6. Inspect the map and correct missed areas.
  7. Add off-limits zones and configure the schedule and cutting height.

The review found that automatic mapping worked impressively overall. However, the mower skipped some areas around obstacles, including a newly planted tree. The reviewer said the missing area could be corrected manually in the app by mowing it within a defined circle.

That is a useful distinction. Automatic mapping can save substantial installation time, but it is not a guarantee that every awkward corner will be represented perfectly. After the first complete run, inspect the map and lawn rather than assuming the initial boundary is final. Landscaping changes, temporary furniture and newly planted features may also require map edits or stay-out zones.

Navigation and obstacle avoidance

The Goat A1600 RTK uses several systems together: 3D ToF sensing, LiDAR-enhanced RTK navigation and Ecovacs’ AIVI 3D obstacle avoidance. In the available review, obstacle detection was strong and the mower followed its mapped area in a structured pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nevertheless, obstacle avoidance has a trade-off: conservative behavior can protect an object while leaving a small patch unmown. Expect to check areas around trees, flower beds, furniture, hoses, toys, tools and other objects. Small or low-contrast items may be harder to detect than large obstacles, and a garden changes after mapping.

Do not treat obstacle detection as a replacement for clearing the lawn. Remove children’s toys, tools, hoses and pet bowls before mowing, and supervise the first runs. The review reports an animal-protection schedule, but that is a time-management feature—not an unconditional guarantee of safety around pets, wildlife or small animals.

Mowing performance

The review reported a good-looking lawn, structured mowing and successful handling of gradients up to 50 percent. A 50% grade is roughly 26.6 degrees, but slope figures need careful interpretation: a mower’s performance can differ on wet grass, while turning, near a boundary or on a slippery surface.

The tested cutting height was 5 cm. The mower offers cutting heights from 3 to 9 cm in 1 cm increments, covering a broader stated range than the Husqvarna 450X NERA’s 20–60 mm range. The A1600 RTK reportedly has two speed settings, 0.4 m/s and 0.7 m/s. The reviewer did not see a visible reduction in mowing quality at the faster setting, although that remains a single test observation rather than a universal result.

Designed for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care.

Ecovacs claims coverage of up to 400 m² per hour. That is a manufacturer claim reported by the review, not an independently measured benchmark. Real coverage depends on lawn shape, obstacles, narrow passages, charging interruptions, signal quality and the schedule selected.

What the dual-disc system means

The A1600 RTK uses two mowing discs, intended to increase cutting coverage and efficiency. It is a distinctive design feature and the observed lawn result was positive. However, the available review did not isolate the second disc in a controlled comparison, so its precise advantage over a conventional cutting system remains unquantified.

Charging and slope claims

The review reported a full charge in approximately 45 minutes. That is close to Husqvarna’s published approximately 40-minute charging time for the Automower 450X NERA, though charging figures vary with conditions and should not be treated as guaranteed real-world results.

The reported 50% gradient result is encouraging, but buyers should distinguish an observed test result from a manufacturer specification. Also check whether a published slope rating applies inside the mowing area or at its boundary. Turning, wet grass and the transition between lawn and paving can be more difficult than a straight climb.

TruEdge: better edges, not edge-free maintenance

Ecovacs’ TruEdge feature is designed to reduce the uncut strip at the edge of the mapped area. The review still found a small safety margin at the boundary.

  • Smart App-Controlled Lawn Care with Custom Zones - Manage your robotic lawn mower through the ECOVACS app. Edit maps, create multiple mowing zones, set no-go areas, adjust cutting height and speed, and define travel paths between zones. Ideal for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care schedules.

That means some manual trimming is likely, particularly beside walls, raised borders, flower beds, drop-offs and irregular paving. “Edge mowing” should be understood as reducing the amount of edging work, not eliminating it. If every visible grass edge must be perfectly flush with a hard surface, include occasional strimming or edging in the ownership plan.

App controls and smart features

The Ecovacs Home app reportedly controls:

  • Cutting height
  • Cutting direction
  • Mowing speed
  • Mowing schedules
  • Rain-related delays
  • Animal-protection periods
  • Off-limits areas
  • Location tracking
  • Theft protection

This makes the mower flexible after installation, especially when a first map needs correction. The review describes the app as intuitive, but it does not establish how every function behaves during a Wi-Fi outage, which features work locally, how notifications perform over time, whether firmware updates are automatic, or whether tracking and cellular services vary by country. Verify those details for your region before relying on remote control or theft recovery.

Rain management and theft protection

A rain sensor can delay mowing and the app reportedly allows a configurable delay before the mower resumes. That is useful for reducing operation during poor conditions, but it does not mean mowing wet grass is always advisable. Wet turf can reduce traction, encourage clumping and leave wheel marks or cause lawn damage depending on soil and weather.

Ecovacs Goat A1600 RTK vs Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA

“Husqvarna” is not a single specification or price point. For a meaningful comparison, the named reference here is the Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA, using Husqvarna’s UK specifications. It is a much higher-capacity machine than the Ecovacs model’s capacity as documented in the accessible review, so the two are not automatically like-for-like.

Husqvarna’s official material also describes EPOS as enabling virtual boundaries, but the exact hardware configuration and included accessories matter. Compare the complete installed system, not just the mower body. Husqvarna’s published specifications for the 450X NERA include approximately 145 minutes of typical mowing time, IPX5 protection and smart-home integration; details are available through its support and specification page.

The real value question: price versus total ownership

The €1,499 figure makes the Ecovacs attractive on headline price, but it is not enough to establish that it is cheaper to own. A proper comparison should include:

  • The mower itself
  • The charging station
  • The RTK reference station
  • Professional installation, if needed
  • Replacement blades
  • Battery replacement
  • Repairs and dealer servicing
  • Any connectivity or software charges
  • Warranty coverage in your country

The available evidence does not provide a multi-season battery test, parts-price analysis, blade-replacement schedule, repair-cost comparison or long-term durability result. Therefore, the defensible claim is that the A1600 RTK appears less expensive than selected premium alternatives at the reported European list price—not that it is proven cheaper over its entire service life.

Who should buy the Ecovacs Goat A1600 RTK?

It is most compelling when:

  • You have a medium-to-large lawn rather than an extremely expansive property.
  • You can place the RTK reference station in a clear, open-sky location.
  • You want virtual-boundary-style operation without paying flagship Husqvarna pricing.
  • Fast charging and structured mowing are priorities.
  • You value automatic mapping and app-based zone editing.
  • You accept occasional trimming along hard edges.
  • You are comfortable with a newer competing platform and can confirm local support.

Who should choose Husqvarna—or a different type of mower?

Husqvarna may be the better choice when the lawn approaches the Ecovacs model’s regional capacity limit, dealer installation is important, or you want an established specialist ecosystem and service network. The Automower 450X NERA is particularly relevant for very large properties because Husqvarna lists capacity up to 5,000 m², or 7,500 m² with systematic EPOS mowing.

A boundary-wire mower may be a safer category choice for gardens with dense tree cover, poor satellite visibility or complicated narrow sections. It can offer more predictable perimeter definition, although installation is more invasive and less convenient to change.

Consider a different solution if your lawn lacks a reliable reference-station location, changes frequently, has many temporary obstacles, requires a much larger rated capacity, or needs confirmed US warranty, parts and dealer support before purchase.

Buyer checklist

Before ordering, confirm:

  1. The actual mowable grass area, excluding beds, patios, driveways and ponds.
  2. The mower’s current capacity specification for your country.
  3. Whether the reference station has a dependable open-sky location.
  4. How trees, buildings and narrow passages affect RTK coverage.
  5. The slope inside the lawn and at its boundaries, in both dry and wet conditions.
  6. Whether lawn edges are flush, raised, irregular or beside a drop-off.
  7. How children, pets and wildlife will be kept away during mowing.
  8. What the local warranty covers and for how long.
  9. Whether blades, batteries, wheels and other replacement parts are readily available.
  10. Whether the quoted price includes the charging station, reference station and required accessories.
  11. Whether live tracking or other smart features require connectivity or a regional subscription.

Final recommendation

The Ecovacs Goat A1600 RTK is a strong value-oriented option on the evidence available. Its reported navigation, mapping, obstacle detection, charging speed and mowing result make the “cheaper Husqvarna alternative” idea plausible for the right garden.

But it should not be bought on the headline alone. The comparison is not like-for-like unless you match lawn capacity, RTK or EPOS hardware, installation, support and long-term ownership costs. Choose the Ecovacs if your lawn is within its verified regional capacity, the RTK station can see the sky, and you can accept some perimeter trimming and map corrections. Choose Husqvarna when larger capacity, dealer support, mature ecosystem or complex-terrain confidence matters more than the initial price.
