Set a dehumidifier to about 45% relative humidity (RH) as a practical starting point. That sits inside ENERGY STAR’s general recommended building range of 30%–50%. In a colder climate during the heating season, a 30%–40% target can help reduce window condensation. Turn the humidity control to the target, then use the timer to select how many hours the unit should run. Because button ranges, dial markings, timer limits and continuous mode differ by model, use the owner’s manual for the exact control sequence.
Choose the right humidity target first
The setting on the display is a target, not necessarily the room’s current humidity. A dehumidifier’s humidistat measures room RH and cycles the compressor or drying system on and off to maintain the selected level. Start at 45% RH, then adjust only when the room’s conditions call for it.

| Situation | Suggested starting target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Typical occupied room | About 45% RH | This is within ENERGY STAR’s general 30%–50% optimum range. |
| Cold climate during heating season | 30%–40% RH | ENERGY STAR gives this lower range to help reduce window condensation. |
| Room still feels damp at the current setting | Lower the target in small steps, or use continuous mode if the manual recommends it | A lower target asks the unit to remove more moisture before it cycles off. |
ENERGY STAR states, “The optimum RH level for a building is generally considered to be between 30% and 50%.” That is general guidance, not a promise that every room, climate or appliance will behave identically. If your unit cannot show RH, use a separate indoor hygrometer to check the room instead of guessing from a numbered dial.

Understand current RH versus the setting
Many panels alternate between two different numbers: the room’s measured RH and the target you have selected. For example, a display could read 58% when you first turn the unit on, then show 45% while you press the humidity buttons. After several seconds without an adjustment, it may return to 58%. Neither number is an error; one is a live reading and the other is the control point.

Give the appliance time to sample the air after changing the setting. A reading near the unit may not represent a larger room immediately, especially after a door has been opened or after bathing, cooking or drying laundry. Use a separate hygrometer placed in the occupied part of the room when you need an independent check. Avoid placing it directly in the dehumidifier’s exhaust stream, beside a radiator or in a damp corner, because those locations can distort the room reading.
Know which control your dehumidifier has
Adjustable humidistat with an RH percentage
A percentage control lets you choose a desired RH. Some models accept a target from 30% to 80% in 5% increments. The selected number may appear while you press the humidity buttons, then the display may return to the room’s current RH after a few seconds. That display behavior is normal on designs that distinguish the target from the live reading.
Numbered intensity dial
Older or simpler controls may show numbered levels rather than percentages. A number on that dial may represent drying intensity, not a measured RH target. Do not assume that “3” means 30% RH. Consult the model’s manual, and use a separate hygrometer when you need an actual room reading. If the dial has no percent markings, note the position that gives acceptable results and verify it with the hygrometer rather than converting the number yourself.

With a humidistat set, the appliance should run until the room reaches the target, stop or reduce operation, and restart when humidity rises. The restart margin is model-specific. GE describes one covered control design that restarts when RH rises about five percentage points above the selected target; that five-point behavior is not universal. A pause does not automatically mean the appliance has failed. Check the room reading and the bucket before troubleshooting further.
Controls that combine modes
Some panels let you select a humidity target and a fan speed, while others offer only a mode such as dry, auto or continuous. Fan speed changes airflow and sound, but it does not necessarily change the RH target. A mode labeled auto may use the humidistat, whereas continuous may bypass or alter that control. Because labels are not standardized, match each button to the manual’s description.
Set the humidity level step by step
- Prepare the room. Close doors and windows while the dehumidifier runs. Openings allow outside moisture to enter and make the unit work longer. Place drainage where water cannot reach electrical circuits or cords, and follow all electrical warnings in the manual.
- Check the bucket or drain setup. Empty a collection bucket before starting a timed run. A full bucket can stop the appliance before the selected timer period ends. If your model supports continuous drainage, verify that the hose and discharge point are arranged as the manual specifies.
- Power on the unit. Press the power button and wait for the control panel to become active. If the appliance is already running, you can change the target without switching it off.
- Open the humidity setting. Press the humidity, RH, plus/minus or up/down control, or turn the humidity dial. The label and sequence differ by model.
- Choose a target below the current RH when drying is needed. Start near 45% RH. If the current reading is higher and the appliance is not running, selecting a lower target gives the humidistat a reason to start. On percentage-based controls, make changes in the increments the panel permits; one common example uses 5% steps.
- Wait for the normal display. Some units show the target while you are adjusting it and then return to current RH. Record the target if the panel no longer displays it so you know which value you selected.
- Let the humidistat cycle. Do not expect the fan or compressor to run continuously at a numeric target. Cycling is how the unit maintains the selected RH. If the room remains damp after a reasonable run, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than immediately assuming the control is defective.
How far should you lower the setting?
Change one variable at a time. If the room is at 58% RH and your target is 50%, first let the unit operate with doors and windows closed. If it settles above the level you want, lower the target toward 45%, then toward 40% only if conditions justify it. A lower setting generally asks for more moisture removal and can mean longer operation. It is not necessary to choose the lowest number on the panel to get a comfortable room.
For colder climates during heating season, ENERGY STAR’s 30%–40% guidance addresses window condensation. Watch both the hygrometer and the windows: the appropriate point within that range depends on the building and weather. In a typical occupied room, staying within the general 30%–50% range is the starting framework; comfort, condensation and the appliance’s ability to reach the setting determine the final adjustment.

Set the timer without ending the run early
A timer usually means “run for this many hours, then shut off,” although some models also offer delayed start. Check the manual before assuming which function your timer provides. A timer controls duration; it does not make the appliance extract moisture faster.
- Press Timer. Look for a clock icon or a button labelled Timer, Off Timer or Delay.
- Select the duration. Use the timer buttons or dial to choose one of the available periods. In the cited LG control example, the range is 1–12 hours in one-hour increments. Other models may provide a different range, larger increments or a delayed-start option.
- Confirm the setting. Stop pressing when the desired duration is shown, or press Set/Enter if the panel requires confirmation. The unit should indicate that a timed shutoff is active.
- Keep the bucket from interrupting the schedule. Empty the bucket before the timed run. On the LG example, the unit switches off when the timer expires or when the bucket becomes full, whichever happens first.
- Check the result once. When the selected period ends, verify that the unit has stopped. If it stopped earlier, check for a full bucket or another protection message before changing the timer.
Timer choices for common situations
Use a short supported period when you want to dry a room before occupying it, and use a longer period when the space has a continuing moisture load. If the appliance offers delayed start, that is different from an off timer: delayed start waits before operating, while an off timer ends operation after the selected interval. Do not assume a timer survives a power interruption or remembers its last duration; that behavior is model-specific.
| Control feature | What it does | What is model-specific |
|---|---|---|
| Humidity target | Sets the RH at which the unit cycles to maintain the room | Numeric range, increment size, button names and display behavior |
| Timer | Schedules automatic operation, commonly an automatic shutoff | Available hours, increments and whether delayed start is offered |
| Bucket-full protection | Stops the unit when collected water reaches the limit | Warning indicator, restart procedure and whether drainage can bypass the bucket |
| Continuous mode | Favors sustained moisture removal instead of stopping at a numeric target | Whether the mode ignores the target, how it cycles, and how drainage must be handled |
Bucket collection versus continuous drainage
A bucket is simple to set up but creates a hard stop. Once the water level reaches the cutoff, the dehumidifier can stop even if the timer still has hours remaining. Seat the bucket fully after emptying it; a misaligned bucket can trigger the same protection as a full one on some designs.
If the model accepts a drain hose, follow its instructions for hose size, slope and discharge location. The outlet must remain away from electrical circuits and cords, and the receiving drain must be able to handle the water. Continuous drainage does not remove the need to check the installation occasionally. A kink, loose connection or blocked drain can interrupt operation or spill water.

Continuous mode is useful when a numeric target is not drying the room enough or when the moisture load is unusually high. It can result in sustained operation, which GE says may be normal during particularly humid periods. Continuous mode does not have one universal meaning: on some designs it keeps dehumidifying regardless of the selected RH; on others it changes how the humidistat cycles. Read the manual before relying on it.
Use continuous mode only with a drainage plan you can monitor. If the unit is collecting water in a bucket, the bucket-full cutoff can still stop operation. A continuously draining setup may be more practical for long unattended runs, but the discharge must remain away from electrical circuits and cords. Continuous operation is a response to a high moisture load, not proof that the room needs to be dried indefinitely; return to a numeric target when the room stabilizes if the manual permits.
If the room is “not dry enough”
“Room is not dry enough” is a common support description for a unit that has not reached the user’s expectation. Work through these checks in order.

The target is higher than you need
Read the selected RH and lower it gradually from the starting point. A target near 50% allows more moisture than a target near 40%. In cold heating-season conditions, the 30%–40% range may be more appropriate for reducing window condensation.
The control is an intensity scale
If the panel shows numbers without a percent sign, the setting may control drying intensity rather than RH. Check the manual and compare the room with a separate hygrometer. Changing an intensity number is not the same as selecting a 45% target.
Doors or windows are open
Close them while operating. Continuous exchange with more humid air can prevent the room from reaching the target and wastes energy.
The bucket is full
Empty the bucket and reinstall it correctly. A full bucket can stop both a timed run and a normal run. If you need longer unattended operation, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for continuous drainage.
The timer is too short
Cancel the timer or select a longer supported period. A timer is a shutoff schedule, not a faster drying mode. If the model only permits short intervals, repeat the cycle while checking RH with a hygrometer.

The room has a high moisture load
Lower the target or use continuous mode if the manual recommends it. During particularly humid periods, sustained operation can be normal. If the appliance still cannot reach the target with doors and windows closed, the room may need a larger or whole-home solution; ENERGY STAR notes that whole-home dehumidifiers can suit some homes and should be professionally sized and installed.
There is no readable RH display
Install an indoor hygrometer or humidity monitor in the room. ENERGY STAR recommends a separate hygrometer when the dehumidifier cannot display RH or provide an adjustable humidistat. Compare its reading with the target you are trying to maintain.

The reading changes unexpectedly
Check whether the panel has returned from the target display to the live RH display. Then allow time for the air to mix and confirm the hygrometer’s location. A sudden change after cooking, showering, laundry or opening a door can be real rather than a control fault.
Use the settings efficiently and safely
- Keep the conditioned space closed. Closed doors and windows help the appliance dehumidify the intended room instead of repeatedly treating incoming outside air.
- Use a properly grounded outlet. Follow the manufacturer’s electrical warnings and keep drainage away from cords and electrical circuits.
- Do not treat a timer as a bucket override. The timer cannot prevent a full-bucket shutoff. Empty the bucket first or use an approved continuous-drain arrangement.
- Measure instead of guessing. A hygrometer is especially useful when the appliance has a numbered dial, an unclear display or no RH readout.
- Choose the lowest practical target. Start around 45% RH and adjust for conditions rather than selecting an extremely low number without a reason. ENERGY STAR’s general guidance is 30%–50%, with 30%–40% in colder heating-season conditions.
- Expect cycling. A unit that pauses after reaching its target may be operating correctly. Restart timing and the RH difference that triggers it vary by design.
- Place the appliance for airflow. Keep its air inlets and outlets unobstructed as directed by the manual. Do not push it into a corner or against curtains if that restricts circulation.
- Recheck after changing conditions. A setting that worked in dry weather may require more runtime during a humid spell. Recheck the room RH instead of assuming the timer or target has changed.
ENERGY STAR’s current consumer guidance says an appropriately sized dehumidifier can use 20% less energy than a similarly sized conventional dehumidifier. That comparison is guidance for similarly sized equipment, not a guarantee for every appliance or operating pattern.

Normal room comfort
Set the humidistat to 45% RH, close the room, and allow the unit to cycle. If you need the room dried before a specific time, add a timer duration supported by your model and empty the bucket first.
Cold-weather condensation
During heating season in a colder climate, try 30%–40% RH. Watch the hygrometer or the unit’s RH display and adjust within that range according to condensation and comfort. The lower range is ENERGY STAR guidance for reducing window condensation, not a universal requirement for every building.
Heavy or persistent moisture
Start with a lower target than 45% or select continuous mode if the manual allows it. Keep doors and windows closed, arrange drainage, and monitor the room. If the unit runs for long periods without reaching the target, consider whether a whole-home system, professionally sized and installed, is more appropriate.
A numbered dial in a basement
Do not translate the dial number into a percentage. Put a hygrometer in the basement, choose the dial position recommended by the manual, and observe the RH over time. If the room remains high despite closed windows and proper drainage, use the manual’s continuous setting or seek a better-sized solution.

Frequently Asked Questions
What humidity should I set my dehumidifier to?
Start around 45% RH. ENERGY STAR’s general range is 30%–50%; in colder climates during heating season, 30%–40% can help reduce window condensation. Adjust gradually based on the room reading and conditions.

Why does my dehumidifier stop before the timer ends?
The bucket may have filled, or the bucket may not be seated correctly. Many units stop when the bucket reaches its limit, even during a timed run. Empty and reinstall it, or use an approved continuous-drain setup.
What does a dehumidifier timer do?
Most timers schedule an automatic shutoff after a selected number of hours. Some models also offer delayed start. The available range and increments are model-specific; one LG example provides 1–12 hours in one-hour steps.
Should I use continuous mode or a humidity percentage?
Use a percentage target for normal maintenance and cycling. Continuous mode can help when moisture loads are high or the target is not drying the room enough, but its operation varies by model. Follow the manual and make sure drainage can handle sustained operation.
What if my dehumidifier has numbers instead of RH percentages?
Those numbers may indicate drying intensity rather than a measured humidity target. Do not assume a setting such as 3 equals 30% RH. Check the manual and use an indoor hygrometer to measure the room.
How can I make dehumidification more efficient?
Close doors and windows, keep airflow clear, use a properly grounded outlet, and keep water drainage away from electrical circuits and cords. ENERGY STAR says an appropriately sized unit can use 20% less energy than a similarly sized conventional dehumidifier.
The Bottom Line
Set the unit near 45% RH, or 30%–40% during cold heating-season conditions when condensation is a concern. Confirm whether your control shows a true RH target or only an intensity level, then choose a model-supported timer duration with an empty bucket. Use continuous mode only as the manual describes, keep the room closed while operating, and verify readings with a hygrometer when the display is unclear.
