Choose a router bit by the cut you need, then verify that its shank, diameter, working length, guide arrangement and cutter material suit both your router and workpiece. Buy an individual bit when you have a specific job; choose a set only when its included profiles and shank size will genuinely be useful.
Choose a bit for the cut
Start with the result you want rather than a package count. A router bit’s profile determines the shape it cuts, while a bearing or guide can help control its path. Grizzly’s router-bit guidance and catalog show examples of common profile-to-task matches; the right choice still depends on the particular bit’s stated use.
| Task | Bit to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cut a groove or make an internal cut | Straight bit; a spiral bit may also suit some internal-cut applications | Cutting diameter and working length for the required groove or cut depth |
| Trim an edge flush to a template or existing surface | Flush-trim bit, typically with a bearing | Bearing location and diameter, cutting length, and whether the bit can follow the intended template or edge |
| Shape a decorative edge | Edge-profile bit, such as a roundover bit | The exact profile and bearing arrangement, if present |
| Cut joinery such as dovetails | Dovetail bit | Bit profile and compatibility with the joinery setup |
These are starting points, not an exhaustive list. Grizzly’s guidance also identifies dovetail bits with joinery and straight or spiral bits with internal cuts. Trend explains that a bearing-guided bit can follow a template or curved workpiece when the bearing suits the task in its router basics guide.
A bearing on a bit and a guide bushing mounted to a router are different guiding methods; do not treat one as a substitute for the other. If your method uses a bushing, check the bit’s clearance against it and the router documentation.

Confirm the bit fits your exact router
The bit shank must match a collet your router accepts. A bit that will not fit the router’s collet is not a compatible purchase; do not assume an adapter or a different collet is available or appropriate without checking the tool’s documentation.
Shank diameter alone does not decide suitability. Grizzly describes 1/2-inch shanks as a stability choice for deep cuts and 1/4-inch shanks as useful for detailed work or small routers, but those are general catalog recommendations—not permission to use a shank size your router cannot accept. Check the manual for your exact model and the collet fitted to it.

Insertion requirements are not universal. Trend recommends inserting as much of the shank as possible and gives at least three-quarters of the shank length as a minimum in its general guidance. By contrast, the Bosch POF 1400 ACE manual specifies at least 20 mm of shank insertion for that model. Follow your router manual where its instructions differ; do not apply either figure to another router without confirming its requirements. See Trend’s guidance and the Bosch POF 1400 ACE operating instructions.
Check diameter, length and clearance
Compare the bit’s cutter diameter, working length and total length with the job and the router’s stated limits. The cutter must be able to reach the intended cut without exceeding the router’s permitted bit size or interfering with its base or guides. A large profile bit is not suitable simply because its shank fits.

Limits can depend on the setup as well as the router. For example, the Bosch POF 1400 ACE manual gives a maximum bit diameter of 42 mm when its guide bushing is not mounted. That is a specification for that router and setup, not a general router-bit limit. Check the manual for your own machine, including any restrictions associated with a guide bushing.
Match the cutter material to the workpiece
Check the bit maker’s application guidance for the material you plan to cut. Grizzly describes carbide-tipped bits for most wood types and laminates. Bosch’s POF 1400 ACE manual describes high-speed steel (HSS) bits for softer materials such as softwood and plastic, and carbide-tipped bits as especially suitable for hard and abrasive materials such as hardwood and aluminium. These recommendations come from those sources and should not be treated as a universal rule for every bit or substrate.

Before use, inspect the bit and use only one that is clean and undamaged, as directed in the Bosch manual. Also check the bit maker’s and router maker’s instructions for permitted applications, maximum RPM and operating limits; there is no single safe RPM figure established here for every router bit.

If you know the operation, buying the individual profile you need is the most direct way to avoid acquiring bits that do not suit your work. A set can be convenient when you expect to use several of its profiles and its shank size matches your router.

Compare the actual contents rather than relying on a set’s label. Bosch lists multipurpose router-bit sets for softwood, hardwood and wood composites in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch shank variants; Grizzly also lists sets with the same shank size. Those examples do not establish that a set is cheaper per useful bit or better quality than individual purchases. Review Bosch’s set listing or the Grizzly catalog for examples of how contents and shanks are presented.
- Does the set include the profile or profiles needed for your planned cuts?
- Does every bit have a shank your router accepts?
- Are the bits specified for your workpiece material and intended operation?
- Will their diameter and working length meet the task while staying within your router’s limits?
Use this pre-purchase check
- Name the cut. Identify the required profile and whether the job calls for a straight, flush-trim, edge-profile or joinery bit.
- Check the guide method. Decide whether the cut will use a bearing, a router-mounted guide bushing or another setup, and verify the relevant clearance.
- Read your router manual. Confirm the accepted collet and shank size, insertion requirement, maximum bit dimensions, and any RPM or operating restrictions.
- Compare bit dimensions. Make sure cutter diameter, working length and total length suit the cut and the machine.
- Confirm material suitability and condition. Follow the bit maker’s application guidance and use a clean, undamaged bit.
- Choose how to buy. Purchase one bit for a known task, or choose a set only if its profiles, materials and shanks match work you expect to do.
For more profile examples, Bosch’s profiling router bits page and WOOD Magazine’s older 2016 guide to buying router bits offer additional context; for compatibility and operating limits, the manual for the exact router remains the controlling reference.
