Seeds that do not sprout may be too old, planted at the wrong depth, kept too wet or too dry, exposed to unsuitable temperatures, or waiting on a species-specific light or dormancy requirement. Check the seed packet and growing conditions before sowing again; without knowing the plant and when it was planted, there is no reliable universal germination deadline.
Start with the seed packet and the expected germination window
Identify the plant, sowing date, and whether the seeds were started indoors or outdoors. Compare the elapsed time with the packet’s stated germination range. Germination timing varies by species and conditions, so a seed that has not appeared yet is not necessarily dead.
Look for instructions on sowing depth, light, temperature, planting season, and any pretreatment such as cold stratification or scarification. Some seeds need a period of cold or another dormancy-breaking treatment before they can germinate; the requirement and duration are species-specific. The Royal Horticultural Society explains that some seeds require pretreatment: seed collecting and storing.
Check whether the seeds were sown at the right depth
Depth affects access to light, moisture, and the energy a seedling has available to reach the surface. Fine seeds and seeds that need light may need to be left on the surface or covered only very lightly. Many medium and large seeds are covered; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives a general indoor-starting guideline of covering them by about one to two times their diameter. Follow the directions for the particular seed rather than treating that guideline as universal: Iowa State’s indoor seed-starting guidance.

- EASIER SEED STARTING: Our Burpee SuperSeed tray with 36 flexible pop-out cells is designed to simplify indoor seed starting for all your favorite vegetables, flowers and herbs. Just add seed starting mix, seeds, water and light to get growing! Rows are labeled alphanumerically for seedling identification with included Plant-o-Gram diagram. Tray dimensions: 11.5" x 10-3/8" x 2-1/4"
- SMARTER WATERING SYSTEM: Molded corner slots in each cell improve drainage and soil aeration to set your seeds up for germination success. Deep channels in the watering tray draw excess away from the cells, while the raised perimeter edge keeps water contained in the tray - no spills! Seed tray side handles make it easy to lift and pour off excess water or check seedlings daily.
- SIMPLER TRANSPLANTING: Soft food-grade silicone cells cradle seedlings and gently flex to pop out when it’s time to transplant into your outdoor garden! This system is specially designed to reduce stress on your seedlings, so you don't damage their roots. After transplanting, trays are easy to clean and reuse or simply store for next growing season. Top shelf dishwasher safe.
- SEED STARTER TIP: Many favorite vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes, must be started indoors before warmer weather arrives. Start pepper seeds 8-10 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, and tomato seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost. Check your Burpee seed packets for instructions on when and how to plant any of your herb, flower and vegetable seeds.
- 100% GUARANTEED: Burpee is committed to the success of all gardeners. We treat each order with care to ensure healthy seeds, plants, soil mixes and gardening supplies are packaged and sent in excellent condition. If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, we aim to make it right!
Review moisture and drainage
Seeds need water to begin germinating, but they also need oxygen. If the growing medium repeatedly dried out, germination may have stopped or failed. If it stayed saturated, limited oxygen and disease can cause seeds to rot before they emerge. Keep the medium evenly moist, not waterlogged, and use a clean, well-draining seed-starting medium indoors. The University of Minnesota Extension discusses moisture and damping-off risks in its guide to starting seeds indoors.
Measure the soil or growing-medium temperature
Room temperature does not necessarily tell you the temperature around the seed. Requirements differ among plants. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says 70–75°F is a general best medium-temperature range for most seeds in its indoor-starting guidance; it is not a universal threshold. Check the packet or species-specific guidance first. If the medium is too cool for the plant, a seed-starting heat mat may help maintain warmth, but it will not correct a depth, moisture, or viability problem.

Consider seed age and storage
Older seed or seed stored in warm, humid conditions may have lower viability. If age or storage is uncertain, test a small sample before committing the rest of the packet. Iowa State describes a simple germination check in its seed-starting FAQ. Poor results in a test suggest that low viability or storage may be contributing; a fresh packet may be the practical choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For outdoor sowing, inspect the soil and seedbed
Outdoor seeds face problems that may not occur in a tray. Compacted soil or a hard surface crust can obstruct emergence; waterlogged soil can deprive seeds of oxygen. Also look for evidence that birds, rodents, or insects removed the seeds. University of Minnesota Extension covers seedbed and emergence issues in its seed-starting guidance. Nutrient shortages more often limit growth after a seedling emerges than explain why a seed never germinated.
