After you replace your Samsung refrigerator’s water filter, reset the reminder by holding the control panel’s Filter Reset control for about three seconds. On Family Hub models, use Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset, then tap Proceed if prompted. The right control depends on your refrigerator model, so use its manual if the labels or menus differ.
Before resetting: replace the filter if it is due
The filter indicator is a replacement reminder, not a measurement of water quality. Samsung’s US support guidance says filters generally need replacement about every six months, though water quality, usage and refrigerator model can affect timing. Reduced water flow can also be a sign that a filter needs replacement even if the reminder has not appeared. Resetting the indicator restarts its timer; it does not replace the cartridge. Check your refrigerator’s model label and the compatibility information before buying a cartridge. You can also look for the cartridge model printed on the filter already installed. Samsung’s US guidance names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN and HAFCU1, but these are not universal fits. Use Samsung’s Fridge Water Filter Finder or the manual for your exact model to confirm compatibility.
Replace the cartridge before resetting the reminder
Filter location and replacement mechanics vary across Samsung refrigerators. Follow the instructions for your model: where appropriate, shut off the water supply, remove the old cartridge, install and lock the matching replacement, and check that it is aligned correctly. Do not force a cartridge that will not lock into place.

After installation, dispense and discard water to clear air and particles from the filter. Samsung’s US guidance says to flush several gallons; its Canada guidance gives about seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses. Because those instructions differ by region and models may have their own directions, use your refrigerator’s manual and continue until the flow is clear and normal. Reset the reminder using your refrigerator’s control
Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same reset method. Match the instructions to the interface on your model rather than trying button combinations at random.

Standard control panel
- Look for a button labeled Filter Reset. On some models, the function is secondary and may share a button labeled Alarm, Water Filter or Ice/Water.
- Press and hold the documented reset control for about three seconds.
- Check the display to confirm the reminder has cleared, changed color or shows a reset status.
Family Hub touchscreen
- Tap Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter.
- Tap Reset, then tap Proceed if the screen asks you to confirm.
- Check that the filter status has updated.
Arrow-button menu
Some models use an arrow-button menu. Samsung’s US instructions describe navigating to More Options and selecting Filter Reset. The precise navigation varies, so follow the instructions for your model rather than assuming every arrow-menu refrigerator is identical.
Older RF4289 and RSG309 models
Samsung’s US guidance gives a separate route for these two models: open Settings → Water Filter, advance to page 4/4, hold Reset the water filter until the status changes, then tap Save. These steps are specifically for the RF4289 and RSG309.

If the filter light will not reset
- The panel has different labels or menus: Find the instructions for your refrigerator’s exact model in its user manual. Samsung notes that reset controls vary by model.
- The reminder remains on after replacement: Confirm that you used the documented reset control and that the cartridge is installed and locked correctly.
- Water flow is low or tastes or smells unusual: A reminder reset does not fix a flow or water-quality problem. Check the cartridge installation and follow the model’s troubleshooting instructions.
- The filter will not lock or water is leaking: Do not treat resetting the indicator as a repair. Check the installation instructions; if the problem continues, use Samsung’s model-specific troubleshooting or support.
