To reset a tripped household circuit breaker, switch off or unplug devices on the affected circuit, move the breaker handle fully to OFF, then switch it to ON. If it will not reset, trips again, or you notice burning, unusual heat, buzzing, or crackling, stop and contact a qualified electrician. A trip can signal an overload or another electrical fault, so do not keep resetting it without addressing the cause.

How to reset a tripped circuit breaker

This procedure is for a household panel with a visibly tripped breaker. It does not cover opening the panel, replacing a breaker, or doing wiring work.

  1. Reduce the load. Turn off or unplug appliances and lamps connected to the affected circuit.
  2. Identify the tripped breaker. Its handle may be fully in the OFF position or sitting between ON and OFF, where it can be easy to miss. If you are unsure which breaker controls the affected area, do not guess at wiring or panel work.
  3. Reset it deliberately. Push the handle fully to OFF, then move it to ON. Moving it fully OFF first is important when the handle is in an intermediate position.
  4. Check what happens. If power returns and the breaker remains on, reconnect devices gradually. Avoid running several high-demand appliances on the same circuit.

If the breaker will not stay on or trips again, leave it off and arrange for a qualified electrician to diagnose the cause. ESFI describes the basic reset sequence and advises getting an electrician if the problem persists: Understanding Your Home Electrical System.

Why a breaker trips—and why the cause matters

A breaker interrupts current when it detects an unsafe condition. Too many appliances drawing power from one circuit is a common cause, but a trip can also point to malfunctioning equipment or a short circuit. Resetting the handle restores power; it does not identify or fix the fault.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises: “Investigate to determine why a fuse blows or circuit breaker trips. Do not simply replace the fuse or reset the breaker.” The statement appears in a 1983 consumer safety release. Its practical point still applies: do not treat repeated trips as a nuisance to override. See the CPSC consumer safety release.

When to stop and call an electrician

  • The breaker will not reset or trips again after you reset it.
  • You see burn marks or notice unusual heat at the panel or electrical equipment.
  • You hear buzzing, crackling, or other sounds that may indicate arcing.
  • A GFCI or other protective device fails its test or reset function.

Do not repeatedly reset a breaker to keep power on, and do not bypass protective devices or replace a breaker with one rated for more current. Panel diagnosis, replacement, and wiring should be handled by a qualified electrician. Electrical Safety First lists heat, burn marks, arcing sounds, and tripping as warning signs requiring attention: Electrical Safety First Aid.

Breaker, GFCI, and fuse: which reset applies?

Standard circuit breaker

A standard breaker is reset at the panel by moving its handle fully to OFF and then to ON. A handle that appears between positions may still be tripped.

GFCI or AFCI protection

Some breakers include ground-fault or arc-fault protection and may have test controls. A GFCI receptacle also has its own reset button; that button is not the panel breaker handle. Follow the device’s instructions, and get qualified help if its test or reset function fails or the breaker trips again. ESFI explains GFCI breaker and receptacle operation at How to Use GFCIs.

Fuse

A fuse is not resettable. If your home has a fuse rather than a breaker, this procedure does not apply; a blown fuse must be replaced with the correctly rated type. If you are unsure what protection your home uses, consult an electrician. The CPSC’s Guide to Home Wiring Hazards discusses breakers, fuses, and household wiring hazards.

What to do after power returns

Reconnect devices one at a time so you can notice whether a particular appliance or combination of loads is associated with another trip. Avoid overloading a circuit with multiple high-current appliances. If the breaker trips again, stop using the circuit and have the cause checked rather than continuing to reset it.
