Spring flowering trees can make a striking display, but their blooms are temporary: some last only about a week, while others may remain for several weeks. Cherry blossoms, eastern redbud and flowering dogwood offer different durations and colors, and kousa dogwood can extend the sequence later into spring. The exact timing depends on the tree and local conditions, so treat published ranges as guides rather than guarantees.
How long do flowering trees bloom?
Bloom duration varies by species, cultivar, weather and region. The figures below come from extension publications and describe specific trees or locations; they are not promises for every tree of that name.
| Tree or comparison | Reported duration or timing | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Cherry blossoms | Typically 7–10 days; up to 14 days after peak bloom under favorable conditions | University of Maryland Extension (2026) says cool, calm, dry conditions can extend the display. Its estimate is not universal to all ornamental cherries. |
| Eastern redbud | Two to three weeks | Clemson Cooperative Extension (2019) describes the flowers’ duration. |
| Flowering dogwood | Two to four weeks | Alabama Cooperative Extension System (2023) gives this estimate; local conditions can differ. |
| Kousa dogwood | Begins two to three weeks after common flowering dogwood | NC State Extension (2025) describes a relative start-time difference, not the duration of kousa’s own flowers. |
Which flowering trees bloom in spring?
Cherry: a brief, weather-sensitive show
Cherry blossoms are the clearest example of a fleeting display. University of Maryland Extension describes a typical flower lifespan of 7–10 days, with up to 14 days after peak bloom under ideal cool, calm and dry conditions. Rain, wind and warmer weather can change what the display looks like from year to year.
Eastern redbud: early color before the leaves
Cercis canadensis bears lavender-pink flowers before its leaves emerge in early spring. Clemson Cooperative Extension reports that the flowers may remain for two to three weeks. Its bare branches make the flowers easy to see, but the calendar date depends on region and season.

Flowering dogwood: blooms with later seasonal interest
Cornus florida is valued for its conspicuous spring display. Alabama Cooperative Extension reports a flowering period of two to four weeks and also notes the tree’s red fruit and fall foliage as additional seasonal interest. That duration is an Alabama source estimate, not a fixed range for every climate.
Kousa dogwood: a later dogwood option
Cornus kousa flowers after common flowering dogwood. NC State Extension says it begins blooming two to three weeks later, with creamy white showy bracts around small yellow flowers. The extension also identifies kousa as resistant to dogwood borer and dogwood anthracnose problems that have affected common dogwood. Check local plant guidance before choosing it for a particular site.

Can you plant trees that bloom at different times?
Yes. Combining trees with different bloom windows can spread spring color across more of the season, though the sequence will shift with local climate and weather. In the Ozarks, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture says redbud usually flowers about a week before dogwood and is usually at full bloom by mid-April. That is a regional example, not a date to apply nationwide. NC State Extension places kousa dogwood’s start two to three weeks after common flowering dogwood, offering another possible later display.
How to choose a flowering tree for your site
Start with the conditions and space where the tree will grow, then compare its bloom and other seasonal features. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s selection criteria include flower intensity, duration, color, fruit and bloom season.

- Check local suitability first. Use regional plant profiles or a knowledgeable local nursery to confirm that a species and cultivar suit your climate and site.
- Plan the sequence. Decide whether you want one concentrated display or staggered flowering, and remember that published calendar timing is regional.
- Compare the whole display. Consider flower color and intensity alongside bloom duration, fruit and fall foliage.
- Fit the mature tree to the planting space. Confirm mature size and site requirements from a regional plant profile before planting; the duration estimates alone do not establish those details.
- Consider disease and pest concerns. This is especially relevant when comparing common flowering dogwood and kousa dogwood; consult local extension guidance for current regional considerations.
Do indoor forced branches tell you how long outdoor flowers last?
No. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s branch-forcing estimates—two to four weeks for flowering cherry and four to five weeks for magnolia—apply to cut branches brought indoors, not trees flowering outdoors. They should not be used to predict an outdoor tree’s bloom duration. A dependable outdoor magnolia duration across species and climates is not established by the sources cited here.
