A salad spinner that will not spin may have a simple seating or debris problem, but a failed cord, spring, gear, or cracked drive part can make repair impractical. First identify the spinner’s drive style, reseat and inspect the basket, then check the maker’s cleaning, warranty, and parts guidance before opening the lid.
Start with the spinner’s drive style
Salad spinners use different mechanisms, including pull cords, pump buttons, and cranks. Identify the brand and model from markings on the spinner or its paperwork, then consult its instructions: general troubleshooting can point to an area to inspect, but it is not a model-specific repair manual. Before assuming the lid has failed, check that the basket sits correctly and that the lid and basket drive pieces engage.
For example, the Zyliss Easy Spin 2 uses a retractable pull cord and brake. Its maker says to hand-wash the lid to protect the mechanism; the bowl and basket are dishwasher safe. A lid that detaches for cleaning is not necessarily designed to come apart for internal repairs.
Match the symptom to a first check
These are possible inspection points, not confirmed diagnoses for every model. Stop if a part is cracked or the basket will not sit evenly; continued spinning can worsen damage.

| Symptom | Possible area | Practical first check |
|---|---|---|
| Basket does not spin | Lid-to-basket engagement, food debris, drive gear or socket | Remove and reseat the basket. Check the matching drive surfaces for obstruction or visible damage. |
| Pull cord will not retract | Cord path, spool, return spring, sticky residue | Do not yank it. Inspect the lid only if the model is designed to open and warranty implications have been checked. |
| Cord pulls out but basket barely moves | Drive engagement, clutch or gear wear | Check basket seating and look for visibly damaged drive surfaces. |
| Pump or button sticks | Residue, plunger travel, return spring | Clean accessible areas as the model instructions allow. Do not force the plunger. |
| Crank turns freely | Loose handle or failed drive connection | Check visible fasteners and the basket’s drive socket before considering disassembly. |
| Wobble, scraping or grinding | Mis-seated or warped basket, debris, damaged hub or gear | Stop and inspect. Do not keep spinning if parts are cracked or the basket cannot sit evenly. |
| Greens remain wet | Overfilled basket, blocked drainage, weak drive | Reduce the load and clear basket openings before concluding that the mechanism has failed. |
Check warranty and parts support before opening the lid
Look up the maker’s policy for the exact model before attempting internal repairs. Policies vary. Zyliss’s US warranty FAQ says its salad spinners may qualify for a five-year warranty; that is a brand-specific coverage statement, not a guarantee that every claim qualifies. The FAQ lists exclusions such as accidental damage and normal wear. Zyliss also says it does not offer spare or replacement parts for its salad spinners and that approved replacements consist of a complete unit. See the Zyliss US FAQ for the applicable terms.
Do not assume that because an outer lid separates for cleaning, the sealed drive mechanism is intended for consumer repair. If the maker does not describe an opening procedure, forcing clips or prying a housing can damage it and may affect warranty coverage.

When repair makes sense—and when to stop
- Try basic checks first: reseat the basket, remove visible debris, reduce an overloaded basket, and clean accessible parts as the manual permits.
- Consider further repair only with model-specific guidance: a general repair guide may describe cleaning or adjustment for some designs, but no universal cord, spring, gear, or repair kit is established for all spinners.
- Stop for structural damage: cracks or splits in the bowl, basket, hub, or other load-bearing drive parts are not reliable candidates for an improvised glue repair.
- Compare exact-part availability with replacement: weigh warranty eligibility, whether the maker sells the needed compatible part, damage to the drive alignment, and the cost and availability of that part versus a complete spinner.
Tools or materials such as braided cord, small pliers, screwdrivers, or lubricant are not universal solutions. Use them only if the manufacturer’s instructions support the repair and confirm that any material is appropriate for the mechanism and its food-use context. No model-independent part fit or repair success rate is established.

Replace the spinner only after basic checks and warranty or parts options are exhausted, or when structural damage makes continued use unwise. Search for a complete salad spinner and verify its size and mechanism against your needs. Some makers may offer compatible parts; others, as Zyliss states for its spinners, may resolve eligible claims with a complete unit instead.
