A 2024 Princeton-led study reported up to 5.6 times the fracture toughness in a specially architected cement-based material compared with a monolithic brittle counterpart. That is a result about resistance to crack growth—not a claim that ordinary concrete has 560% greater compressive strength. The researchers made the material with a hybrid 3D-printing and casting process; it is not an off-the-shelf mix for construction sites.
What “560% stronger” means in this study
The headline’s “560% stronger” wording is shorthand for a reported increase of up to 5.6-fold in fracture toughness. Fracture toughness describes resistance to a crack forming or growing through a material. The comparison was with a monolithic brittle counterpart, and the researchers reported the improvement without sacrificing specific strength. The paper does not establish a universal increase in concrete’s compressive strength, the measure commonly used to specify concrete for construction.
Princeton’s plain-language summary calls the material 5.6 times more damage-resistant than standard counterparts. That describes the same study result, not a separate test or an independent finding. The underlying peer-reviewed paper by Shashank Gupta and Reza Moini appeared in Advanced Materials in 2024; Princeton’s publication record lists December 27, while the university’s research summary dates from September 16 and says the article appeared September 10. These dates refer to different publication records, so the study is best identified simply as a 2024 paper. Princeton Materials Institute’s explanation and the Princeton publication record and abstract describe the finding.
How the bone-inspired architecture works
The design takes inspiration from cortical bone, the dense outer layer of a femur. In bone, tube-like structures called osteons sit within a surrounding matrix. Weaker interfaces, known as cement lines, can give cracks a path that bends around osteons rather than allowing an abrupt break through the material.
#1 Best Overall
- FOR EASY REPAIRS — It's the ideal concrete patch repair mix, neatly fixing cracks and spalls so your property looks like new. It's even textured for a more seamless blend with the existing structure
- TOUGH AND DURABLE — Formulated to avoid shrinking or cracking, the ready-to-use premixed cement patch offers good adhesion and high strength so your slabs, walls & walkways/sidewalks perform as good as ever
- EASY CLEANUP — Sika concrete patch is acrylic-based, so once application is done, it cleans up using only water. No need for special cleaners and chemicals
- GREEN — It follows regulations concerning the use of volatile organic compounds (VOC), helping to keep the air we breathe cleaner and fresher
- A BREEZE TO USE — Minimal prep is required, since it comes premixed. Just use a putty or trowel to spread where repairs are needed. It takes only a few hours to set and about a day for a full cure
Gupta and Moini engineered cylindrical and elliptical tubes in cement paste to create a similar pattern of crack interactions. As a crack encounters these features, it can be redirected and delayed. The resulting stepwise growth dissipates energy over successive interactions, rather than letting a crack race through a uniform, brittle block. The researchers used principles of fracture mechanics and statistical mechanics to design the material’s internal architecture.

The study used a hybrid process combining 3D printing and casting to produce cement-based material with designed internal tubes. Its result demonstrates a materials-design approach, not a recipe for changing a conventional concrete pour. Simply adding hollow tubes to a standard mix would not reproduce the tested architecture.

- QUICK SETTING: Sets in 20 minutes
- VERSATILE: Indoor, and outdoor use
- EASY TO USE: Ready to use! Just add water, mix, and use!
- MULTIPLE SURFACES: Handrails, bolts, poles, fixtures, and more

Princeton identifies additive manufacturing as a possible route to scaling the designs, but the reported work does not establish field deployment, building-code acceptance, a commercial product, or a price. The researchers also identify tube size, shape, orientation, and degree of disorder as variables for further investigation. No construction specification or deployment-scale performance figure is established in the cited study materials.

What builders and property owners should take away
- Do not substitute this result for a concrete strength specification. The 5.6-fold figure concerns fracture toughness against a monolithic brittle counterpart, not a general compressive-strength rating.
- It is an architectural material concept, not a bagged mix. The effect depends on engineered internal geometry produced by a hybrid printing-and-casting method.
- It is promising research, not an available construction system. The cited sources do not document an approved product, field use, or code-ready design.
