How to Reconnect a Ring Floodlight Camera to Wi-Fi

Use the Ring app’s Device Health menu to reconnect a Floodlight Cam, then troubleshoot passwords, 2.4 GHz networks, setup-button access, router settings, and offline errors before resetting.

Most Ring Floodlight Cam connection problems can be fixed without deleting the camera or performing a factory reset. If the camera is offline, open the Ring app and go to the camera’s Settings → Device Health → Network, then choose Reconnect or Change Network. Follow the prompts, press the camera’s physical setup button when requested, select the correct Wi-Fi network, and enter its password.

The labels can differ by Ring app version. Older versions may use ☰ → Devices → Floodlight Cam → Device Health → Reconnect to Wi-Fi or Change Wi-Fi Network.

Before you begin

Have these items ready:

  • The current Wi-Fi network name and password.
  • A phone or tablet signed in to the Ring device owner’s account.
  • The latest available Ring app and an up-to-date mobile operating system.
  • Physical access to the Floodlight Cam’s setup button. A high-mounted camera may require a ladder.
  • A stable power supply to the hardwired camera.
  • A phone positioned near the camera during setup.

Shared users may be able to view or control a camera but may not have the controls required to change its Wi-Fi. If the network option is missing, sign in with the owner’s Ring account.

The fastest way to reconnect a Ring Floodlight Cam

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. On the dashboard, open the Floodlight Cam tile or tap its ••• menu.
  3. Tap Settings, then Device Health.
  4. Under Network, tap Reconnect or Change Network.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. When prompted, press the camera’s setup button to enter setup mode.
  7. Allow the app to connect to the temporary Ring setup network.
  8. Select the desired household Wi-Fi network.
  9. Enter the password exactly, including capitalization.
  10. Wait for setup to finish, then return to Device Health and confirm that the camera is online.

Ring’s current U.S. offline-device instructions use the camera tile, Settings, and Device Health path. Menu names may change between app releases. See Ring’s current offline-device guide for the latest interface.

Reconnect, change network, reboot, and reset are different

Action What it does
Reconnect Attempts to restore the camera’s connection after a temporary outage or interruption.
Change Network Moves the camera to a different router, Wi-Fi name, password, mesh system, or network.
Power cycle Restarts the camera without beginning a new setup or changing stored credentials.
Factory reset Erases the camera’s configuration and requires a fresh setup.

Turning off power does not automatically replace the Wi-Fi credentials stored by the camera. For a new router or password, use Change Network first.

If your Wi-Fi name or password changed

Use Device Health → Network → Change Network. You normally do not need to delete the camera from the Ring app or reset it merely because the router, SSID, or password changed.

You will still need physical access to the setup button. A Floodlight Cam generally cannot be moved to a new Wi-Fi network entirely remotely because the button activates the camera’s temporary setup network.

If the camera is offline but the network did not change

  1. Try Reconnect from Device Health.
  2. Check Device Health for an error message or code.
  3. Use the app’s reboot option if it is available.
  4. If necessary, turn off power to the hardwired camera at the appropriate circuit or disconnecting point for about one minute, then restore power.
  5. Restart the modem and router.
  6. Check the Wi-Fi signal at the camera’s mounting location, not beside the router.
  7. Retry setup after the camera has finished booting.

Floodlights turning on proves that the camera has electrical power, not that it can reach your router or Ring’s servers.

Where is the setup button?

The setup button is generally on or near the top of the Floodlight Cam housing, but placement varies by model. Because the camera is hardwired and often mounted high on an exterior wall or eave, you may need safe ladder access or assistance from someone who can reach the device.

  • 1080p HD security camera for your home or business with motion-activated LED floodlights, 105dB security siren, Two-Way Talk, and customizable motion zones.
  • Get motion-activated notifications on your phone, tablet or PC and check in at home anytime with Live View all in the Ring app.
  • Customize motion zones in the Ring app to fine-tune which areas you want to focus on.

Press the button only when the Ring app asks you to. The camera then creates a temporary Ring Wi-Fi network that the phone uses during setup. Ring describes the iOS and Android setup behavior in its camera setup guide.

What the Floodlight Cam lights may indicate

LED patterns vary between the original Floodlight Cam, Floodlight Cam Wired Plus, Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, and related generations. Identify the exact model under Device Health → Device Details → Product Name, then consult Ring’s model-specific light-pattern guide.

Light pattern Possible indication
Solid white Preparing for activation on applicable models.
No light Ready but not activated, or idle, depending on model and state.
Flashing white Setup mode on applicable models.
Rapid flashing blue Failed Wi-Fi connection, commonly associated with distance or problematic network-name characters.
Rapid flashing red Incorrect Wi-Fi password or setup failure on applicable models.
Alternating blue and red Connected to Wi-Fi but unable to reach Ring’s servers or the internet.
Rapid flashing green Setup failed because the camera could not reach Ring’s servers or the internet on applicable Floodlight models.

Do not treat this table as a universal chart for every Floodlight Cam generation. Firmware-update and reset patterns also vary.

When the Wi-Fi network does not appear

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that your phone can join the desired Wi-Fi network.
  2. Move the phone closer to the camera and, if practical, move the router or nearest mesh node closer to the camera.
  3. Try the 2.4 GHz network. All Ring devices support 2.4 GHz, while only some support 5 GHz.
  4. If both bands share one SSID, temporarily create or select a dedicated 2.4 GHz network for troubleshooting.
  5. Check whether the router is using a restricted 5 GHz channel. Channel availability varies by region.
  6. As a troubleshooting experiment, simplify unusual or special characters in the Wi-Fi name.
  7. Restart the modem and router.
  8. Try another compatible phone or tablet.
  9. Use a phone hotspot only as a temporary diagnostic test, not necessarily as a permanent camera connection.

For readers outside the United States, Ring notes that some 5 GHz channels may be unavailable in Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan because of regional regulations. The relevant channels and recommendations should be checked against Ring’s current setup guidance.

2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz

For an exterior-mounted camera, 2.4 GHz is often the practical first choice because it generally travels farther and penetrates walls better. 5 GHz may provide more capacity but usually has shorter effective range and may not be supported by every model.

Use the band that provides a stable connection at the camera—not necessarily the band that is fastest next to the router.

When the password is rejected

Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Verify the password independently before repeating Ring setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the phone, forget the household Wi-Fi network.
  2. Join it again manually.
  3. Enter the password carefully.
  4. If the phone cannot connect, fix the password or router configuration before troubleshooting the camera.
  5. Once the phone connects successfully, retry Ring setup.

Ring recommends forgetting and rejoining the network as a way to verify the password.

When the phone cannot connect to the Ring setup network

  • Press the setup button only when prompted.
  • Keep the phone close to the camera.
  • On iPhone or iPad, accept the prompt to join the Ring network.
  • On Android, allow the app to connect automatically or manually choose the Ring network if prompted.
  • Temporarily disable a VPN.
  • Give the Ring app the permissions it needs, including location access where the phone’s operating system requires it for network discovery.
  • Try another phone or tablet.
  • If QR scanning fails, use the app’s manual setup option.

Ring’s retrieved app guidance listed iOS 17 or later and Android 9 or later. These requirements can change, so check Ring’s current app troubleshooting page.

When the camera joins Wi-Fi but remains offline

This usually indicates an internet-access or router-configuration problem rather than an incorrect Wi-Fi password. Check the following:

  • SET IT UP ONCE. THE SUN HANDLES THE REST. Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 140 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.
  • Confirm that a phone on the same network can access the internet.
  • Check the camera’s Device Health page for an error code.
  • Restart the modem and router.
  • Make sure an old router is not still operating as a second router.
  • If two routers are necessary, ask the internet provider or router manufacturer about bridge mode.
  • Review firewall, DNS, security, ports, and protocols that could block the camera from reaching Ring’s servers.
  • Check the distance between the camera and the nearest mesh access point.
  • Temporarily test a different compatible network to separate a camera problem from a home-network problem.

Do not assume that a guest network will solve the issue. Client isolation or restrictive guest policies can prevent the camera from reaching required services.

Mesh systems and multiple routers

A mesh system can improve coverage when several rooms, floors, or outdoor areas have weak signal. Setup may still fail if the camera is too far from the nearest node, the mesh uses incompatible security or steering behavior, or an old router creates a second routed network.

Ring mentions eero as one possible mesh option, but it is not mandatory and is not guaranteed to fix every installation. Ring also presents Chime Pro as a possible Ring-focused signal-improvement option. Diagnose the existing connection before purchasing hardware.

When to factory-reset the camera

Use a factory reset only after ordinary reconnection, rebooting, power cycling, and network checks have failed. It may be justified when:

  • Reconnect or Change Network repeatedly fails.
  • The camera will not enter setup mode.
  • The app cannot find the temporary Ring setup network.
  • The camera appears to have corrupted or unusable configuration.
  • Ring Support directs you to reset it.

Ring community representatives have advised holding the setup button for at least 20 seconds in certain camera troubleshooting cases. That is community guidance for relevant cases, not a universal reset instruction for every Floodlight Cam. Confirm the procedure for your exact model before proceeding.

Do not delete and re-add the camera as the first response to a normal router or password change.

Do you need a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system?

Problem Most sensible next step
One Ring camera has weak coverage near an exterior wall First test a dedicated 2.4 GHz network and router placement. A Ring Chime Pro may be worth considering if coverage is the confirmed problem.
Several rooms or floors have weak coverage Consider a properly configured mesh system, such as eero or another suitable system.
The password is wrong or the owner control is missing Fix the account or password; new hardware will not help.
The router uses multiple-router, firewall, DNS, or bridge-mode settings Work with the router manufacturer or internet provider.
The camera will not power or enter setup mode Contact Ring Support or investigate a device-specific fault.

A Ring Protect subscription is not a connectivity fix. Recording and event history depend on the account’s current plan and settings after the camera is back online.

Verify the camera after reconnection

Open Device Health and check that:

  • The offline warning has disappeared.
  • Live View opens.
  • Motion alerts arrive.
  • The floodlights respond as expected.
  • The intended network is shown.
  • The reported Wi-Fi signal is adequate.
  • Recording and event history behave as expected for your Ring plan and device settings.

When to contact Ring or your internet provider

Contact Ring Support for persistent device-specific failures, suspected hardware faults, setup-mode problems, model-specific reset questions, or account and ownership issues. Contact your internet provider or router manufacturer for incorrect router credentials, bridge-mode configuration, firewall rules, DNS problems, blocked protocols, or unreliable internet service.

The least destructive path is usually the best one: use Device Health → Reconnect or Change Network, test 2.4 GHz when range or compatibility is uncertain, and reserve a factory reset for failures that ordinary troubleshooting cannot resolve.
