Its new Matter-compatible range includes bulbs, plugs, remotes, motion sensors, door sensors, leak detectors, and climate sensors at unusually low device prices. But the system is not completely hub-free: you still need a compatible Matter controller, and many sensors also need Thread infrastructure.
That distinction determines whether IKEA is a genuinely inexpensive upgrade or a $100-plus ecosystem purchase. For existing Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or other compatible users, IKEA’s new devices can be low-cost additions. For buyers starting from zero, the controller, batteries, and platform limitations belong in the budget.
What IKEA actually changed
IKEA announced 21 Matter-compatible smart-home products on November 6, 2025, with availability continuing through a phased regional rollout in 2026. Product names, stock, pricing, and timing vary by country, so US prices below are examples seen on IKEA’s US site rather than permanent prices or worldwide recommendations. IKEA’s announcement describes the range as a move toward simpler, more affordable everyday automation.
The new lineup focuses on practical tasks rather than premium appliances or elaborate security hardware:

The important change is not just the number of products. These devices are designed around Matter, an interoperability standard that lets supported products be added to compatible smart-home platforms instead of being locked entirely to IKEA’s own app.
The products that make the most sense
Cheapest lighting entry
KAJPLATS starter kits appeared on IKEA’s US site at about $9.99 for white-spectrum and $14.99 for color-and-white-spectrum versions. Individual bulbs appeared at roughly $8.99 to $13.99, depending on the base, brightness, and color capability.
This is a sensible first experiment if you already have a compatible controller. Add a bulb to a hallway or bedside lamp, then use a schedule, motion trigger, or physical remote. Buyers wanting elaborate color effects, premium color quality, or a deeply mature lighting ecosystem may still prefer a more specialized lighting brand.
Low-cost sensors for ordinary rooms
The new sensors target useful, narrow jobs:
- MYGGSPRAY: detects motion for entryway, stairway, or lighting routines.
- MYGGBETT: reports whether a door or window is open.
- KLIPPBOK: detects water near a sink, washing machine, or other vulnerable location.
- TIMMERFLOTTE: monitors temperature and humidity.
- ALPSTUGA: monitors air quality and can support ventilation-related routines or alerts.
Captured US listings put TIMMERFLOTTE at about $9.99, MYGGSPRAY and MYGGBETT around $7.99–$9.99, KLIPPBOK around $7.99–$9.99, and ALPSTUGA around $29.99–$34.99. Check the local IKEA catalog before buying because prices and availability change.
These are awareness and automation devices, not substitutes for professional security, calibrated environmental monitoring, or an automatic water shutoff system. A leak sensor can warn you; it does not close the water supply.
Physical controls are a bigger improvement than they sound
BILRESA remotes appeared at roughly $5.99–$9.99, depending on the model and listing. Their value is not simply convenience. A remote lets children, guests, older residents, or anyone without the relevant phone app control a light directly.
That makes IKEA’s approach more practical for shared rooms than a phone-only system. Matter compatibility helps connect the device, but the physical control is what makes the automation usable day to day.

Do not use a smart plug as a universal solution for high-load equipment or appliances that should never be hard-power-cycled. A low price does not remove the need to check the appliance and plug specifications.
Matter and Thread in plain English
Matter is not an app, a hub, or a wireless network. It is a common communication standard for compatible smart-home devices. It can make it easier to add a device to IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another supported environment.
Thread is different. It is a low-power mesh network used by many battery-powered smart-home products. It is not Wi-Fi, and Matter does not automatically mean Thread: Matter devices can use Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet depending on the product.
The practical setup looks like this:
Device → Matter controller → chosen smart-home app
Thread device → also needs a Thread Border Router
A Thread Border Router connects the Thread mesh to the rest of your home network. DIRIGERA provides this infrastructure, but compatible Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, or other hardware may also provide it. Check the exact model you own; having an app or voice assistant does not by itself prove that your hardware supports the required Matter and Thread functions.

Do you need the DIRIGERA hub?
Not always—but you do need a compatible controller. IKEA’s launch material referred broadly to a smart-home hub, while its later US guide makes the more useful distinction: DIRIGERA is optional for some Matter-only setups, but a controller remains necessary, and Thread products need suitable Thread infrastructure.
| Situation | Most sensible route |
|---|---|
| You already have a suitable Matter controller and Thread Border Router | Buy the IKEA Matter device without DIRIGERA, subject to platform support. |
| You own older TRÅDFRI or other legacy IKEA products | Consider DIRIGERA. IKEA says it can connect older Zigbee products, act as a Matter controller, and bridge them into newer ecosystems. |
| You want IKEA Home smart as the central app | DIRIGERA is the IKEA-centered choice. |
| You are starting with no smart-home controller | Budget for a controller, and possibly DIRIGERA, rather than judging the system by a $7.99 sensor price. |
| You want a broad, highly configurable mixed-brand system | Compare IKEA with SmartThings, Home Assistant, or the platform you already use. |
DIRIGERA appeared at approximately $109–$119.99 on different IKEA US page captures. Treat that as a dated price signal, not a guaranteed current price. It may be good value for an existing IKEA household, but redundant for someone who already has suitable Matter and Thread infrastructure.

Three realistic starter setups
1. Cheapest useful lighting experiment
- One KAJPLATS bulb or starter kit: about $9.99–$14.99 in captured US listings.
- One BILRESA remote: about $5.99–$9.99, if desired.
- An existing compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router, if required by the device.
This is the lowest-cost path because the controller is already owned. If you do not have one, add its cost before deciding whether IKEA is cheaper than another platform.
2. Hallway or entryway automation
- KAJPLATS bulb.
- MYGGSPRAY motion sensor.
- A compatible controller and Thread Border Router, or DIRIGERA.
- Batteries where the product requires them.
The intended routine is simple: motion turns on the light during selected hours, then the light turns off after inactivity. The exact trigger, timeout, notification, and automation options depend on the chosen platform.
3. Basic home-protection setup
- KLIPPBOK near a washing machine or sink.
- MYGGBETT on a door or window.
- TIMMERFLOTTE for temperature and humidity information.
- A compatible controller, Thread infrastructure, and required batteries.
This can provide useful warnings without pretending to be a complete monitored security system. Notifications, alarm behavior, and cross-device routines may differ between IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings.
What the setup process looks like
IKEA’s documented Matter pairing path is:
- Power on the device and put it into pairing mode.
- Open the preferred smart-home app.
- Scan the Matter QR code on the yellow packaging insert, or enter the numeric Matter code.
- Assign the device to a room, then create routines or scenes.
If the QR code will not scan, use the numeric code. A stable Wi-Fi or Thread network and an active controller are important when a device appears offline. IKEA’s setup and troubleshooting guide is the appropriate reference for the product and market you bought.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what they mean
The device will not pair
Check that the device is in pairing mode, the QR or numeric code is correct, the app is current, and the controller is online. A device already paired to another ecosystem may need to be reset before it can be commissioned again.
A Thread sensor appears offline
Look for a missing or unsuitable Thread Border Router, weak mesh coverage, or an unstable home network. Moving the sensor closer to the Thread network can help, but the underlying controller and infrastructure still need to support the device.
An older IKEA product is missing
Legacy products may require DIRIGERA and the IKEA Home smart system. Bridging can preserve older devices, but it does not guarantee that every old product exposes every new Matter feature or behaves identically in every third-party platform.

- Crystal-clear video calls: Video calls feel natural on the vibrant 11" screen with a centered, auto-framing camera, 3.3x zoom, and noise reduction technology. Use live view to check in on your family, pets, and more while you're away.
An automation is unavailable
Matter improves interoperability, not feature parity. A sensor may pair successfully while a particular trigger, notification, measurement, remote behavior, or advanced routine remains limited by the chosen platform.
What existing IKEA owners should know
DIRIGERA’s ability to bridge older IKEA Zigbee products is one of the strongest reasons to choose it. Existing users may be able to keep older lights and controls while adding Matter devices gradually instead of replacing everything at once.
However, the transition is not necessarily identical everywhere. Independent coverage reported that some older products, including RODRET, SOMRIG, PARASOLL, VALLHORN, TRETAKT, and INSPELNING variants, were being discontinued or replaced in parts of the range. Discontinuation and stock vary by country, so verify the local IKEA catalog before planning around a specific model. Tom’s Guide’s coverage also flagged that some new battery-powered devices and remotes do not necessarily include batteries.
That last point matters. The real cost is:
device price + controller, if needed + Thread infrastructure, if needed + batteries and accessories.
Where IKEA is a good fit—and where it is not
IKEA is a good fit if you want:
- Low upfront prices for bulbs, sensors, plugs, and physical controls.
- Simple lighting, motion, door, leak, and climate routines.
- A room-by-room expansion rather than a large technical project.
- Matter compatibility with a platform you already use.
- A practical path for retaining older IKEA devices through DIRIGERA.
Look elsewhere if you need:
- Cameras, video doorbells, professional monitoring, or a complete alarm system.
- Automatic water shutoff or advanced energy management.
- Highly configurable local automations with maximum technical transparency.
- Deep support for a very large number of third-party products.
- Guaranteed identical behavior across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings.
- A single device that also serves as a media streamer, display, or full automation server.
Home Assistant may suit technically confident users who prioritize local control and customization. SmartThings is particularly relevant for mixed-brand homes, and Samsung has highlighted integration with IKEA’s Matter-over-Thread products and DIRIGERA bridge. Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa may be the simplest choices when the household already owns the relevant controller hardware.
The verdict
IKEA has genuinely lowered the cost of starting a useful smart home. A bulb, remote, motion sensor, door sensor, leak sensor, or smart plug can cost only a few dollars more than an ordinary household accessory, making small experiments realistic for renters and homeowners.
But “simpler” does not mean “no infrastructure.” Matter reduces platform lock-in; it does not remove the need for a controller. Thread makes battery-powered devices efficient; it does not replace a Thread Border Router. DIRIGERA is valuable for an IKEA-centered setup and legacy products, but unnecessary for some buyers who already have compatible Matter and Thread hardware.
