Samsung does not provide one universal “force update” command for every soundbar. To manually check for new firmware, use SmartThings on a compatible Wi‐Fi model or install the correct firmware through USB. Soundbars without Wi‐Fi generally require USB. Never unplug the soundbar while an update is running.
Choose the right update method
| Your situation | Use this method |
|---|---|
| The soundbar supports Wi‐Fi and is already in SmartThings | SmartThings |
| SmartThings cannot find an update | USB |
| The soundbar has no Wi‐Fi | USB |
| You want hands-off updating | Automatic updating, if supported |
| The main bar updated but wireless speakers did not | The model-specific component procedure |
First find the complete model code, such as HW-Q990D or HW-Q800C. Search Samsung Support using that code—not simply “Samsung soundbar.” Firmware is model-specific and may also vary by region.
Samsung’s general guidance is available in its soundbar firmware update instructions and its regional update guidance.
Before you update
- Record your equalizer settings, speaker levels, preferred input, and other custom choices.
- Confirm that the download matches the exact soundbar model and, where applicable, regional variant.
- Keep the soundbar connected to stable power.
- Do not unplug the soundbar, subwoofer, or rear speakers during installation.
- If using SmartThings, make sure the soundbar is connected to Wi‐Fi and already added to the app.
- If using USB, use a clean drive and extract the downloaded firmware correctly.
Samsung warns that an update may erase personal settings or disconnect the subwoofer, although this is model-dependent rather than guaranteed for every soundbar.

Method 1: Force the update through SmartThings
This is normally the quickest manual check for a Wi‐Fi-capable, SmartThings-compatible soundbar.
- If the soundbar, subwoofer, or rear speakers are behaving unusually, unplug the affected equipment for about 30 seconds and reconnect it.
- Open the SmartThings app.
- Select your soundbar.
- Tap More options, shown as three vertical dots.
- Choose Information.
- Choose Firmware Update.
- Tap Update Now and follow the on-screen instructions until the process reports completion.
The wording can differ by model, region, and SmartThings app version, but the current Samsung path is generally Information → Firmware Update → Update Now.
SmartThings updating requires a compatible model, an existing SmartThings setup, and network access. A power interruption can disconnect the soundbar from Wi‐Fi, in which case you may need to add or configure it again before an update appears.
Automatic updating: convenient but not immediate
Supported Wi‐Fi soundbars may download updates while connected to the internet, including while powered off or in standby as described by Samsung. Leave the soundbar connected to power and Wi‐Fi if you want automatic updates to remain available.

This is not a reliable “check now” function. If you need the update immediately, use SmartThings or the model’s USB procedure. Soundbars without Wi‐Fi generally cannot update automatically or through SmartThings.
Method 2: Force the update with USB
USB is the main fallback when SmartThings offers no update and the required method for many non-Wi‐Fi soundbars.
- Open Samsung’s Support or regional download center.
- Search for the complete soundbar model code.
- Open the model page and select Downloads or Manuals & Downloads.
- Download the newest firmware package listed for that exact model.
- On a computer, unzip the downloaded package.
- Open the extracted folders until you reach the actual update files.
- Copy the required files to the root level of the USB drive. Do not leave them inside an extra folder.
- With the soundbar powered off, insert the drive into the soundbar’s USB or service port.
- Turn on the soundbar.
- If required by the model, press Source until the display shows USB.
- Wait for
UPDATE, a percentage indicator, or another model-specific update message. - Leave the soundbar untouched until the process ends. If it restarts or powers off, allow the sequence to finish before removing the drive.
Some models begin automatically when the USB drive is detected; others require selecting the USB source. A USB-A service port, music-playback port, and microUSB update port are not interchangeable in every design. Follow the instructions for the exact model.
USB mistakes that prevent detection
- Copying the ZIP file instead of extracting it.
- Putting extracted files inside a second folder.
- Using firmware for a similar but different Q-Series or other model.
- Renaming files when Samsung has not instructed you to do so.
- Inserting the drive into a port that is not intended for updates.
- Leaving unrelated audio files on the drive.
- Using a USB device the soundbar cannot read.
Do not assume a universal formatting requirement. If the model manual specifies a filesystem or USB type, follow that instruction. Otherwise, Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends removing audio files, power-cycling the soundbar, and trying another USB device.

How to check the installed firmware version
Samsung’s general US procedure is:
- Turn the soundbar off.
- On the remote, press and hold the Sound Control button—the button with the gear icon—for about six seconds.
- When the unit turns off and displays the version information, note the numbers following the letter
B.
This procedure is not universal. For example, Samsung’s model-specific HW-Q90R guidance uses a 20–30-second press and can cycle through firmware for the soundbar, wireless module, subwoofer, and rear speakers.
If no version appears, consult the manual for your exact model. Compare the displayed version or versions with those listed on the model’s Samsung download page. A complete soundbar system may have several firmware versions rather than one shared number.
What a successful update may look like
Depending on the model, the display may show:
UPDATE- A percentage-progress indicator
- A sequence such as
UPDATE → BYE → ON - A restart followed by the soundbar powering off
Update times vary. Samsung’s HW-Q90R instructions describe roughly 10 minutes for one USB update and about five minutes for certain rear-speaker and subwoofer updates. Those timings should not be treated as universal.
When SmartThings shows no update
“No update available” does not necessarily mean the app is broken. The soundbar may already have the latest firmware offered for that model and region, or the model may not support SmartThings updating.

Try this sequence:
- Close and reopen SmartThings.
- Confirm that you selected the correct soundbar.
- Unplug the soundbar and, where applicable, the subwoofer and rear speakers for about 30 seconds, then reconnect them.
- Reconnect the soundbar to Wi‐Fi if its network connection was lost.
- Return to Information → Firmware Update → Update Now.
- If no update appears, use the exact model’s USB package.
When the USB update is not detected
Check the following before trying again:
- The firmware is for the complete model code.
- The downloaded package was unzipped.
- The update files are at the USB root, not in a folder.
- The drive is in the correct service/update port.
- The model’s required power state and USB-source selection were followed.
- Unrelated audio files have been removed.
- A different compatible USB drive has been tested.
Do not repeatedly interrupt the soundbar while experimenting. Recheck the model-specific instructions first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the update appears frozen
A display that remains unchanged briefly is not proof of failure. Do not unplug the soundbar while UPDATE or a progress indicator is active. Wait for the model’s stated process to finish.
If the unit becomes responsive and Samsung’s instructions indicate that a retry is appropriate, power-cycle it as directed and retry with a freshly downloaded, correct package. If it remains unresponsive or repeated attempts fail, stop forcing power-offs and contact Samsung Support.
If the subwoofer or rear speakers do not update
The main bar can show current firmware while its wireless module, subwoofer, or rear speakers still have different versions. Check each component when the model supports separate version displays.

Some systems also require a separate component procedure. For example, Samsung’s HW-Q90R instructions describe turning on the soundbar and holding the remote’s Down button for about six seconds until UPDATE appears. That is a model-specific instruction—not a universal Samsung shortcut. Do not apply it to another soundbar unless its documentation says to do so.
After updating, re-pair the subwoofer or rear speakers if necessary and restore any settings that were reset.
When to contact Samsung
Use Samsung service if the correct firmware repeatedly fails to install, the soundbar will not recover after an interrupted update, the display remains unresponsive, or the USB/service port appears damaged. Repeatedly cutting power during installation can create a more serious problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update a Samsung soundbar without Wi‐Fi?
Usually, yes—through the model-specific USB method. Soundbars without Wi‐Fi generally cannot use automatic or SmartThings updating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill a firmware update add major new features?
Not necessarily. Firmware may improve compatibility or fix bugs, but Samsung does not guarantee that every update adds major features.
Can a firmware update erase my settings?
It can. Samsung documents possible loss of personal settings and subwoofer connection, although this is not guaranteed for every model.
Why did only the soundbar update?
Wireless modules, subwoofers, and rear speakers may have separate firmware and may require a model-specific update or re-pairing procedure.
