Yes—you can view soil-moisture readings in Apple Home, but most soil sensors cannot connect directly. The most flexible setup is soil-mo moisture sensor → Home Assistant → HomeKit Bridge → Apple Home. Some products use a Matter-compatible manufacturer bridge, while DIY sensors can feed Home Assistant through ESPHome.

One important terminology point: soil moisture is water contained in soil; humidity is water vapor in the air. Apple Home may display a numerical soil-moisture percentage under a generic Humidity label because of HomeKit’s available sensor mappings. The value can still represent soil moisture.

The practical ways to get soil moisture into Apple Home

Setup Best for Main trade-off
Home Assistant + HomeKit Bridge Most existing sensors and advanced automations Requires an always-on Home Assistant installation
Matter sensor or manufacturer bridge Minimal intermediary software The exact sensor, bridge and hub requirements vary
ESPHome custom sensor DIY hardware and custom calibration Requires electronics and configuration work
Bluetooth sensor + Home Assistant Indoor plants and short-range monitoring Range and reporting intervals can be limiting

Apple Home does not provide a universal native workflow for every soil-moisture sensor. A device must either support Apple Home directly, expose a compatible Matter accessory, use a manufacturer bridge, or be imported through software such as Home Assistant or Homebridge.

Before you begin

  • A working Home Assistant installation.
  • A soil-moisture sensor supported by Home Assistant, or a gateway that can provide its data.
  • A numerical reading, preferably normalized to a percentage.
  • A stable local network.
  • An Apple Home setup. Remote access and some automations may require a compatible Apple home hub; check Apple’s current requirements because hub and Matter support can change.

Set up the Home Assistant path

1. Add the sensor to Home Assistant

The procedure depends on the hardware:

  • Matter: Add the device through Home Assistant’s Matter integration.
  • ESPHome: Configure the ESPHome device and adopt it in Home Assistant.
  • Bluetooth: Use Home Assistant Bluetooth support, or an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy if the host lacks adequate coverage.
  • Ecowitt: Use the required Ecowitt gateway and a compatible Home Assistant integration.
  • Zigbee: Pair the sensor through a Zigbee coordinator or supported vendor bridge.

The sensor should appear as an entity such as sensor.monstera_soil_moisture.

2. Normalize the entity

The ideal entity has a numeric state, a percentage unit, a descriptive name, a stable unique ID and a reasonable update interval. Conceptually, its metadata may look like this:

name: Monstera Soil Moisture
unit_of_measurement: "%"
device_class: humidity
state_class: measurement

This is a conceptual example, not universal copy-and-paste YAML. The exact template syntax depends on the source integration and your Home Assistant version.

Using humidity for a numerical soil-moisture percentage is a compatibility workaround for HomeKit exposure. It does not mean the sensor measures humidity in the air. Home Assistant distinguishes numerical material moisture from air humidity in its Moisture integration documentation.

3. Add HomeKit Bridge

  1. Open Settings in Home Assistant.
  2. Open Devices & services.
  3. Select Add integration.
  4. Search for HomeKit Bridge.
  5. Add the integration.
  6. Choose the soil-moisture entity, or create an entity filter.
  7. Note the QR code and pairing PIN shown by Home Assistant.

Expose only the entities you need. A narrow bridge is easier to use and troubleshoot than one containing every Home Assistant device. A conceptual filter might be:

homekit:
  filter:
    include_entities:
      - sensor.monstera_soil_moisture

Check the current HomeKit Bridge documentation before applying YAML, because configuration options and UI handling can vary by version.

4. Pair the bridge in Apple Home

  1. Open Apple’s Home app.
  2. Tap Add Accessory.
  3. Scan Home Assistant’s QR code, or choose Don’t Have a Code or Can’t Scan?
  4. Select Home Assistant Bridge.
  5. Accept the uncertified-accessory warning if it appears.
  6. Enter the PIN if requested.
  7. Assign the sensor to the correct room.
  8. Rename it clearly, such as Monstera Soil Moisture.

5. Check the displayed result

Apple Home should show a percentage reading, but it may call the accessory Humidity. That label reflects HomeKit’s service mapping, not necessarily the physical measurement.

Confirm that:

  • The value changes after watering.
  • It is assigned to the correct room.
  • It is not stuck at 0%, 100% or Unavailable.
  • Apple Home updates within the sensor’s expected reporting interval.
  • The value is soil moisture—not air humidity from a nearby environmental sensor.

Why Apple Home may say “Humidity”

Apple’s HomeKit humidity-sensor service provides a way to carry a numerical percentage. HomeKit Bridge documents numerical humidity sensors and binary moisture sensors, but it does not clearly establish a dedicated Apple Home accessory presentation for numerical soil-moisture sensors.

As a result, a numerical soil-moisture entity is commonly exposed using a humidity-style service. Rename the accessory to include the plant or bed name—for example, Basil Soil Moisture—so the label remains clear for both Apple Home and Siri.

Choosing a sensor and connection method

Matter-capable sensor

A Matter product can be the simplest route, but verify whether it connects directly to Apple Home or requires a Thread border router, vendor hub or other bridge. Also check whether it exposes a numerical soil-moisture value, rather than a generic or binary state.

Matter does not automatically mean “no hub.” Radio protocol, Matter multi-admin support, Apple home-hub requirements and the accessory type all matter. See Home Assistant’s Matter documentation for the broader integration model.

Third Reality soil sensor and Smart Bridge

Third Reality’s official manual describes a Zigbee soil-moisture sensor using the Smart Bridge MZ1 to become Matter-compatible for ecosystems including Apple Home. The bridge is required for that route and is sold separately.

This is a documented bridge-to-Matter arrangement, not necessarily a direct Apple Home pairing. Confirm current availability, bridge firmware and how the current Apple Home app represents the reading before buying.

Ecowitt WH51 or WH52

Ecowitt sensors are useful when you need several outdoor or garden sensors, but they require a compatible Ecowitt gateway or console and are not direct Apple Home accessories.

  • WH51: listed at $17.99 USD on August 18, 2026; 0–100% range, one AA battery, and a manufacturer-stated 70-second update rate. The product page also describes IP66 protection and indoor/outdoor use. Check regional radio frequency before ordering.
  • WH52: listed at $27.99 USD on August 18, 2026; measures soil moisture, soil temperature and electrical conductivity, and also requires a gateway or console.

Prices and availability are time- and region-dependent. The gateway cost must be included in the total setup.

ESPHome custom sensor

For DIY installations, ESPHome’s b-parasite component supports an open-source soil sensor platform, while the SMT100 component supports soil-moisture and temperature hardware.

This route provides local control and flexible calibration, but requires firmware, networking, power and enclosure decisions. Wi-Fi battery operation can be difficult, and the raw probe output may not become a meaningful percentage until calibrated.

Bluetooth plant sensor

A Bluetooth sensor can use this path:

Bluetooth sensor
      ↓
Home Assistant Bluetooth or ESPHome Bluetooth proxy
      ↓
HomeKit Bridge
      ↓
Apple Home

Bluetooth range, walls, battery life and infrequent reporting can all affect reliability. Some inexpensive sensors also use undocumented protocols or provide a vendor-calculated index rather than a standardized water-content measurement. Home Assistant’s HomeKit Device documentation discusses Bluetooth proxies and related bridge arrangements.

Calibrate the percentage before automating

A displayed percentage is usually sensor-relative. One device’s 30% may not be comparable with another device’s 30%. Products may calculate the number from capacitance, conductivity, a proprietary lookup table, raw analog values or calibrated volumetric water content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For practical plant care, treat the scale as a local reference:

  • 0%: the driest reference established by that sensor and calibration.
  • 100%: the wettest reference established by that sensor and calibration.

Those values do not necessarily mean bone-dry soil and mathematical saturation. Soil composition, salinity, temperature, probe depth and placement all affect readings.

Resistive probes are often inexpensive, but exposed electrodes can corrode and react to salt content. Capacitive probes can be better suited to long-term use because the sensing electrodes may be isolated from direct current flow, but they still vary in quality and require calibration.

Thresholds and Apple Home automations

Thresholds should be selected for the plant and calibrated sensor, not copied blindly from another installation. As starting points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plant situation Example starting threshold
Moisture-loving plant 35–50%
Typical indoor tropical plant 25–40%
Drought-tolerant plant 15–30%
Outdoor bed Calibrate locally

Use the sensor’s reporting interval when designing automations. For example, the WH51’s listed update rate is about 70 seconds, so an automation should not assume that a new reading arrives every few seconds.

Low-moisture notification

A reliable rule is:

When soil moisture is at or below the plant’s dry threshold
and remains there for a confirmation period,
notify the user.

Do not trigger on one low reading. Probe movement, transmission delays and temporary sensor errors can create false alerts.

Hysteresis prevents repeated alerts

Use separate dry and recovered thresholds:

Notify when moisture ≤ 25%.
Do not notify again until moisture ≥ 40%.

This prevents repeated notifications when the reading fluctuates around one boundary.

Automatic watering needs safeguards

A soil-moisture percentage alone should not start a pump or valve without protection. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A minimum time between watering cycles.
  • A maximum pump runtime.
  • A leak detector or reservoir-empty sensor.
  • A manual override.
  • An availability check.
  • A high-moisture cutoff.
  • Seasonal or weather restrictions for outdoor installations.
  • A fail-safe state when the sensor stops reporting.

Home Assistant is generally the better automation layer for filtering, history, calibration and pump safety. Apple Home can remain the convenient interface for viewing, Siri queries and simple household controls.

What Apple Home will not necessarily preserve

Apple Home may not show every Home Assistant attribute. Depending on the mapping, it may omit calibration information, raw readings, signal strength, battery voltage and detailed history. It may also offer fewer automation conditions than Home Assistant.

HomeKit Controller can import HomeKit devices into Home Assistant, and HomeKit Bridge can export supported entities back to Apple Home. That can be useful when a device’s original HomeKit connection does not provide the automation flexibility you need.

Troubleshooting

The sensor appears in Home Assistant but not Apple Home

  1. Check that the entity is included in the HomeKit Bridge filter.
  2. Confirm that its state is numeric and its unit is %.
  3. Check whether its entity type is supported by the bridge.
  4. Reload or restart HomeKit Bridge after configuration changes.
  5. Confirm that the bridge remains paired in Apple Home.
  6. Check that the devices are on the same local network, or that permitted VLAN routing is configured.
  7. Check multicast DNS and firewall rules.

Home Assistant documents UDP port 5353 for mDNS and TCP port 21063 by default for HomeKit Bridge communication, subject to configuration. See the current documentation before changing firewall rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Home shows no percentage

The entity may be binary rather than numerical, may lack the percent unit, may report text, or may be exposed as an incompatible accessory type. Create a normalized template sensor with a numeric percentage state, expose that entity, then reload the bridge. Remove and re-add the bridge only if the mapping does not refresh correctly.

The reading is always 0% or 100%

Inspect the source value in the manufacturer app or Home Assistant. Check probe insertion, soil contact, calibration, soil type, sensor placement, corrosion and whether the raw-value conversion is inverted. A gateway or firmware fallback can also produce a fixed value.

The reading jumps after watering

Water is not distributed uniformly through a pot, and a probe measures its immediate surroundings. Keep the probe at a consistent depth, avoid placing it beside the drainage path, calibrate in the actual potting mix, and use a moving average or persistence condition.

Apple Home stops updating

First determine whether Home Assistant is still receiving fresh data. Then check the source sensor, bridge status, Home Assistant IP address, mDNS, duplicate HomeKit bridges and whether the entity ID changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home Assistant notes that HomeKit accessory identity can be associated with the entity ID in some situations. Changing an entity ID without a stable unique ID can cause the HomeKit configuration for that accessory to be lost. Make naming and entity identity stable before pairing.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose Home Assistant + HomeKit Bridge if you already have a sensor, want broad compatibility, or need filtering and safe watering automation.
  • Choose a documented Matter or vendor-bridge product if you want less software maintenance and are comfortable checking hub requirements.
  • Choose Ecowitt for multiple garden sensors or longer-range outdoor monitoring, provided you include the gateway in the budget.
  • Choose ESPHome for custom probes, local control and DIY calibration.
  • Choose Bluetooth for nearby indoor plants when coverage and reporting intervals are acceptable.

Homebridge is another possible bridge for products with a maintained plugin, but plugin quality and HomeKit accessory mapping vary. It is best treated as an alternative rather than the default route.

Final recommendation

For most technically comfortable Apple Home users, use a supported soil sensor, bring it into Home Assistant, normalize it to a numerical percentage, and expose only that entity through HomeKit Bridge. Expect Apple Home to show a humidity-style percentage and label the accessory clearly as soil moisture.

If you want fewer intermediary systems, choose a product with a specifically documented Matter or manufacturer-bridge path, and verify the required gateway, hub, firmware, radio protocol and Apple Home presentation before purchasing.
