How to Protect Newly Planted Trees and Shrubs in Winter

Water newly planted trees and shrubs when fall soil is dry, mulch over the root zone, and add screens, trunk guards, or fencing only where exposure or wildlife calls for them.

Before the ground freezes, check soil moisture, water newly planted trees and shrubs if the root area is dry, and spread a modest layer of mulch over the roots without piling it against the trunk. Then add only the protection the site calls for: a spaced wind screen for exposed evergreens, a breathable guard for vulnerable trunks, or a fence where deer browse or rub. Each measure addresses a different winter risk; none is necessary for every planting.

Start with the root zone: water before the ground freezes

Newly planted roots are still establishing, so monitor soil moisture through fall rather than relying on a fixed watering schedule. During dry weather, water deeply while the soil is unfrozen. The University of Maryland Extension recommends continued moisture monitoring during the first two years after planting, including in winter when conditions allow; do not water frozen ground. Its guidance describes moistening the top six inches of soil. Ken Johnson of University of Illinois Extension gives a practical target of six to eight inches: “When watering trees and shrubs, provide enough water to moisten the soil 6 to 8 inches deep.” (Illinois Extension, November 10, 2023.)

Check below the mulch and in the original root ball. Soil texture, rainfall, wind, and plant size all affect how quickly the root area dries; sandy soil and a dry, windy autumn may need more attention than a rainy fall or moisture-retentive soil. Apply water slowly with a hose, soaker hose, or drip line so it reaches roots instead of running off. During a winter thaw, water only if the soil is unfrozen and dry and local conditions permit.

Mulch over the roots, not against the trunk

A loose layer of wood chips or straw helps moderate root-zone temperature and moisture and reduces the effects of freeze-thaw cycles, which can heave new plants and injure roots. Spread mulch over the root area as practical, rather than making a small mound at the base.

2Roll Burlap Tree Protector Wraps 7.8" × 9.8' Winter Garden Plants Wraps
  • Sturdy Material, Porous and Breathable: our tree wrap is made of jute burlap material. It was light weight so it didn't hurt the plants and keeping them warm saved them from freezing, and dries faster than most wraps after it gets wet so the danger of rotting is broken
  • Perfect Size: You will get 2 rolls of burlap tree protector wraps, each roll is about 118in/3m long and 7.8inches wide, you'll get 6m/20ft in total. Sufficient length to take care your trees, and plants wrap can be cut for multi-tree protection
  • Easy to Wrap: You just need to fix the wrap at the bottom of the tree, then spiral up and around the tree, and reach the appropriate height and thickness and secure the upper end with a rope to easily complete the tree protection. The whole process is faster and easier than the traditional hemp rope
  • Function: The winter tree protect cover is a Fast and Practical Way to keep your plants away from winter winds, snow, freezing rain, and ice, can be used in the summer as a shade cloth for senstive plants. In addition, it can keep soil in place where vegetation has not established
  • Multi-function: The winter Tree Trunk Guard Protector Wrap also protects plants from being nibbled by animals, such as deer woodpeckers chewing off the bark, tent caterpillars moving up the tree, and sap-sucking woodpeckers destro paper birch. Suitable for all kinds of fruit trees, shrubs, landscape trees, garden ornamental trees, palm trees, oak trees, etc

Recommendations vary slightly by source: UNH Extension recommends two inches for new plantings, while Illinois Extension gives a general range of two to four inches for trees and shrubs. A modest two-to-four-inch layer is a useful guide, not a universal threshold. Keep it away from the trunk; mulch piled against bark can hold dampness and create shelter for pests and disease. (See UNH Extension and Illinois Extension.)

Give exposed evergreens a wind screen

Evergreen foliage can lose water during winter, while frozen ground limits the roots’ ability to replace it. Drying winds and bright winter sun increase the risk of winter burn, particularly for susceptible species and recent transplants. Moist soil going into freeze-up is the first step; where a plant is exposed to prevailing winds, a burlap or canvas screen can reduce exposure.

  1. Set stakes or another stable support on the windward side of the plant.
  2. Attach burlap or canvas to make a screen, leaving at least six inches between the screen and foliage, as Iowa State University Extension advises. A screen is generally preferable to wrapping foliage tightly.
  3. Do not use black plastic as a wind screen; UNH Extension warns that it can cause extreme temperature fluctuations.

Some compact plants may tolerate burlap wrapping, but it is not a blanket recommendation. Anti-desiccant sprays are also conditional rather than a substitute for moisture or suitable siting: UNH Extension advises waiting until evergreens are fully dormant and following the product label, while Illinois Extension notes that products differ by species and some are unsuitable for scale-leaved evergreens such as arborvitae.

Use trunk protection for vulnerable bark

Young, newly planted, or thin-barked trees can be vulnerable to sunscald, which may appear as dead, sunken, or cracked bark. Tree wrap or a suitable trunk guard can help protect the trunk; some guards also deter rabbits. Choose protection that allows airflow and room for the trunk to expand. Iowa State Extension recommends installing seasonal wrap or plastic guards in fall and removing them in spring; do not leave a constricting wrap in place indefinitely.

A trunk guard is not a complete deer barrier. Where deer browse plants or rub their antlers on trunks, fencing around susceptible plants is the more direct physical barrier. UNH Extension describes fencing as the most effective protection, though cost or practicality may limit its use. Repellents may help, but can require repeated application and do not eliminate damage.

Handle snow and animal pressure as separate risks

  • Rabbits or voles chewing bark: Fit an appropriate trunk guard, checking that it does not constrict the trunk.
  • Deer browsing or rubbing: Consider a fence around vulnerable plants; repellents are less definitive and may need reapplication.
  • Heavy snow falling from a roof: A frame can shield shrubs in the snow’s path. Carefully brush snow away only when it is bending limbs excessively.

Match the measures to the plant and site

Risk Useful response What to consider
Dry roots before freeze-up Monitor soil and water slowly when dry and unfrozen Rainfall, soil texture, exposure, and the root ball change watering needs.
Freeze-thaw movement around roots Loose mulch over the root area Keep mulch off the trunk; source guidance ranges from two inches to two-to-four inches.
Winter drying of evergreen foliage Moist soil before freeze-up; spaced burlap or canvas screen at exposed sites Species, wind exposure, and screen clearance matter.
Sunscald or animal injury to trunk Suitable trunk guard or seasonal wrap; fencing for deer pressure Allow airflow and growth; remove seasonal wrap in spring.
Snow loading or roof-shed snow Protective frame; careful removal of excessive snow bending limbs Focus on plants in the path of falling or accumulating snow.

Plant hardiness, planting date, local climate, soil drainage, winter sun, prevailing wind, and wildlife pressure all affect which steps are useful. Persistent winter injury can signal that a species or planting location is a poor match; protection cannot substitute for choosing a plant suited to its site. This guidance is U.S.-focused, and timing varies by region, so consult local extension advice for mild-winter or exceptionally cold locations.
