Preventing dampness and mold in barracks starts with keeping rainwater out and away from the building, repairing leaks promptly, and controlling indoor humidity with HVAC or dehumidification suited to warm, wet weather. Why barracks get damp in rainy climates
Rainfall is only one possible source. Water can enter through roof coverings, flashing, wall joints, windows, or foundations; plumbing can leak; and humid outdoor air can condense on cooler surfaces. Inspect roofs, openings, and drainage
Have maintenance staff inspect roofs, flashings, penetrations, wall joints, and windows after significant rain. Clear gutters and downspouts, and ensure discharge does not pool beside or beneath the building. Check site drains, grading, and below-building spaces for standing water or seepage. Build walls to shed and drain water
For upgrades, the goal is not simply a waterproof outer surface. A wall should shed most rain at its cladding and provide a route for water that gets past that layer to drain or dry. Find and repair the source of moisture
Treat roof stains, wet ceiling or wall finishes, plumbing leaks, recurring window condensation, musty odors, and wet carpets or furnishings as prompts to investigate. Do not cover or repaint a damp area before finding and addressing its moisture source. After a leak or spill, remove standing water and dry affected materials promptly. EPA says drying wet or damp materials within 24–48 hours will prevent mold growth in most cases. Control humidity without making rooms wetter
EPA’s general guidance is to keep indoor relative humidity below 60% if possible, with 30–50% as the preferred range. An indoor humidity meter can help staff identify rooms that need attention. Ventilation and dehumidification need to match outdoor conditions. When outdoor air is cold and dry, bringing in more air can help dry a building; when it is warm and humid, outside air may add moisture, so dehumidification is often the more useful control. In rainy weather, facilities staff should verify that HVAC controls, condensate pans, and drain lines work correctly and that the system can control humidity during low as well as peak cooling loads. Exhaust moisture from bathrooms and cooking areas where practical. Use bathroom exhaust during and after showers, and avoid drying laundry indoors unless the room has an effective way to remove the added moisture. Set up reporting and follow-up inspections
Give occupants a clear, easy way to report roof stains, leaks, condensation, musty odors, wet belongings, and HVAC drain problems. Facilities teams should record where and when issues recur, inspect after significant rain, and confirm that repairs stop the wetting rather than merely hiding its signs.

- Investigate recurring moisture at its source instead of repeatedly cleaning or repainting the visible area.
