How to Prepare Garden Soil for Fall-Planted Perennials

Prepare soil for fall-planted perennials by checking drainage, using a soil test to guide amendments, and avoiding wet-soil tillage.

Prepare the bed before planting: check drainage, test the soil, and make only the changes the site and test results call for. That matters especially for perennials, which may occupy the same ground for years and can be difficult to move or correct later.

1. Choose a site that suits the plants

Start with the perennial’s light and soil needs, then assess the bed’s drainage and fertility. Plants differ in how much moisture and fertility they tolerate, so there is no single soil recipe for every perennial. Plan for those conditions before planting rather than assuming they can be fixed easily afterward. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and University of Maryland Extension offer guidance on evaluating and preparing planting areas.

2. Check how quickly the soil drains

A simple percolation check can flag a bed that stays too wet for many perennials. Iowa State Extension’s 2024 guidance describes this method:

  1. Dig a hole at least 12 inches deep and 4–12 inches wide.
  2. Fill it with water and let the soil drain once to become saturated.
  3. Fill the hole again and measure how far the water level drops after 15 minutes.
  4. Multiply the measured drop by four to estimate the drainage rate in inches per hour.

Iowa State describes 1–3 inches per hour as desirable for most plants and a rate below 1 inch per hour as poor drainage. These are the thresholds in its guidance, not a guarantee that every species will thrive at those rates. If the bed drains poorly, consider whether the site can be improved or whether plants suited to wet conditions are a better choice. For a small planting area, a raised bed may also be an option. See Iowa State’s drainage recommendations and Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guidance on landscape planting beds.

3. Test soil before adding lime or fertilizer

A soil test helps identify pH and nutrient needs so you can amend the bed deliberately rather than by guesswork. Mississippi State Extension advises not to add lime without a soil test; lime is not a general-purpose soil conditioner. Follow the sampling directions of the lab you use. Purdue Extension’s 2024 guidance describes collecting small cores from several representative places in the garden, at a depth of 6–8 inches, then mixing them together for a sample. Mississippi State Extension and Purdue Extension’s soil-sampling guidance explain these steps.

4. Add organic matter when the bed needs it

Compost and other organic matter can help improve soil structure and water-holding characteristics. Purdue Extension quotes retired consumer horticulture specialist Rosie Lerner: “Adding organic matter will help improve soil drainage and water-holding capacity, and loosen up heavy soils.” The amount to incorporate is not universal; extension recommendations vary with context:

Guidance Recommended amount and context
Iowa State Extension 2–4 inches of compost worked into the top 6–12 inches as part of its drainage-improvement guidance.
University of Maryland Extension About 1–2 inches when preparing a flower bed.
Mississippi State Extension 3–4 inches as a general perennial-bed recommendation.

These are context-specific recommendations, not a single rate to combine or apply automatically. Consider the bed’s condition and the local guidance that fits it. Use mature compost suitable for garden use.

5. Work soil only when it is workable

Do not dig or till soil when it is wet; working it then can damage its structure and promote compaction. Avoid repeated or excessive rototilling, which Iowa State warns can break down soil aggregates. When incorporating compost, loosen the bed only as much as needed. Virginia Cooperative Extension also cautions against using amended soil as backfill around a root ball, since it may interfere with water movement; use the excavated soil for backfill. 6. Choose planting time for the species and location

Fall planting dates are local, not universal. Iowa State’s guidance for Iowa says container-grown perennials can be planted in spring or early fall; its typical fall window is late August through September, with at least 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes for establishment. Maryland Extension distinguishes by bloom season: spring-flowering perennials are planted in late summer or early fall, while late-summer- or fall-flowering perennials are planted in spring. Check local extension recommendations and the plant’s own requirements rather than applying Iowa’s calendar elsewhere. Iowa State’s perennial planting guidance and Maryland Extension’s guidance provide regional context.

7. Plant at the right depth, water, and mulch

For container-grown perennials, Iowa State advises setting the plant at the same soil depth it had in its pot. Backfill with the excavated soil, water after planting, and place 3–4 inches of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Most perennials do not need starter fertilizer; use a soil-test recommendation if nutrients need to be added. Iowa State’s planting instructions cover these steps.
