Organize your closet by emptying it, sorting what remains, measuring the actual space, and adding storage only for problems you can see and measure. These six steps create a practical setup that is easier to maintain—whether you use existing shelves or decide a closet organizer system is justified.
A well-organized closet starts with seeing the room you actually have. Empty it, reduce what no longer belongs there, measure before buying anything, then assign each remaining category a practical home. A complete closet organizer system can help in the right space, but it is optional; many closets work better with a few shelves, bins, hanging organizers, shoe storage, or door storage selected for a specific need.

What to gather before you begin
Set aside a clear temporary staging area—such as the bed, a clean floor, or a folding table—and have a trash bag, donation bag or box, cleaning supplies, a tape measure, labels, and a pen ready. If you plan to buy storage later, take notes or photos of the empty closet so you can compare products against the real space.

1. Empty the closet and clean the blank space
Take out clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, boxes, and anything that migrated into the closet from another room. Pulling everything out first is useful because it reveals usable shelves, rod space, floor area, the back of the door, and obstructions that piles can hide.
#1 Best Overall
- Simply Modern, Seamless Fit: The CUSTOS Collection pairs crisp right‑angled lines with handy open storage to create a minimalist look that fits easily into your home. Complete your space with matching storage furniture for a cohesive look
- Customize Your Walk-In Closet: The closet system expands from 4' to 9.6' wide to fit small to extra‑wide closets. Four 26"–49" telescoping hanging rods and a 6‑height adjustable shelf let you customize the layout and build your dream reach-in closet
- Spacious Layout: 5 hanging zones maximize vertical space, keeping dresses, shirts, pants, and jackets wrinkle-free and easy to access. 4 shelving storage areas hold hats and bags, including a bottom section for shoes, and a top shelf holds storage bins
- Flexible Installation: Set up the adjustable rods on one side or both to fit your space, or just use the middle tower alone. If you need a different rod height, you can drill new holes to fit your clothes and storage needs
- Built to Last, Easy to Clean: Made from particleboard with classic white finish and quality hardware, this closet organizer starter kit is sturdy and durable while giving a clean, modern, and timeless look. The smooth surface wipes clean in seconds
Vacuum or sweep the floor, wipe shelves and the rod, and look for issues worth addressing before reloading the space: a loose shelf, a sticking door, a vent that needs to remain clear, or a wall area that could affect a future installation. This is not the time to force a storage solution into an unknown space; it is the time to understand the space.
2. Sort before you organize
Organizing items that no longer fit your life only relocates the problem. Sort each item into four action groups:
- Keep: items you wear, use, and can store in usable condition.
- Seasonal or store elsewhere: off-season clothing, occasionwear, luggage, or items that belong in another suitable storage area.
- Donate: clean, usable items that meet the local receiving organization’s rules.
- Discard or recycle: damaged, soiled, or otherwise unsuitable items, following local disposal or textile-recycling options where available.
There is no universal “one-year rule” that decides what to keep. A more useful prompt is: Does this fit my present life, feel comfortable, remain usable, and have a realistic role in my wardrobe? Remove non-clothing clutter that has a better home elsewhere before designing storage around it.
Do not place every unwanted item in the donation pile. Goodwill guidance notes that acceptance can vary by local organization, and donated clothing should generally be clean and in usable condition; confirm the specific location’s current rules before making a trip. Reuse is worthwhile when appropriate: the EPA identifies discarded clothing as a principal source of textile waste, though any national figures drawn from its 2018 data should be understood as historical, not a current annual estimate.
3. Measure the closet and inventory what remains
Measure before you shop. A bin that is one inch too deep, a rack that blocks a door, or a shelf that conflicts with a rod creates more frustration than storage.

- ALL-IN-ONE CLOSET ORGANIZER: Wood closet organizer system kit includes tower, (3) expandable rods, (5) interior closet shelving (2 shelves are adjustable)
- FITS CLOSETS 5 – 10 FT. WIDE: Hang rods expand from 30 inches to 48 inches (Rods can be trimmed or installed on only one side of unit to accommodate smaller closets.)
- CUSTOMIZE CLOSET SYSTEM WITH ADD-ON UNITS: The SuiteSymphony Collection includes additional drawers, doors, shoe shelves, rods, top closet shelving and other compatible units to create a fully customizable closet (All add-on components sold separately)
- VERSATILE CLOSET INSERT FOR ALL HOME ORGANIZATION NEEDS: This closet storage system can be utilized in both reach-in and walk-in closets to store shirts, pants, jackets, sweaters, shoes, décor or other items; It can also be used in dens, bedrooms, play areas, offices, and other spaces where home organization is a necessity
- RODS OPTIONAL: Utilize the storage tower and closet shelving without attaching hang rods for alternative purposes or organization in spots where space is limited; Hang rods can be attached on both sides or along one single side as needed
Record these dimensions and constraints
- Usable interior width, depth, and height.
- Rod height and length, plus how much clearance hangs below it.
- Shelf width, depth, and vertical clearance.
- Floor area after accounting for door swing and long-hanging garments.
- Door type and usable door-back area.
- Baseboards, vents, outlets, trim, sloped ceilings, and other obstructions.
- For a rental, any restrictions on drilling or wall-mounted storage.
Then count the jobs the closet must perform. Separate long-hang garments from short-hang garments; identify folded categories such as sweaters, tees, and denim; count shoes and bags; and decide what can live in less accessible space. This converts “I need more storage” into a plan you can evaluate.
| Category | Questions to answer | Likely zone |
|---|---|---|
| Long hanging | How many dresses, coats, or long garments need clearance? | Full-height rod section |
| Short hanging | How many shirts, blouses, jackets, or folded-on-hangers items are used regularly? | Rod section that may allow storage below |
| Folded clothing | Which items stack well, and which need separation? | Shelves, bins, baskets, or drawers |
| Shoes and accessories | How many pairs or categories need an assigned home? | Floor, shelf, door, or a small container |
| Seasonal or occasional items | How often are they needed? | Upper shelf or another appropriate storage location |
4. Give every category a zone
Put the things you reach for most often in the easiest-to-reach areas. Use upper shelves and other inconvenient zones deliberately for seasonal, occasional, or lower-use items. The top shelf should be a defined storage zone, not an overflow pile.
A simple zoning plan is often enough:
- Daily hanging zone: the clothes you wear most, grouped in a way that makes getting dressed easier.
- Folded zone: shelves or containers for categories that do not need to hang.
- Shoe zone: a defined floor, shelf, or rack area that keeps footwear from spreading across the walking space.
- High-storage zone: labeled containers for seasonal or less-frequent items.
- Small-item zone: a shallow container, hooks, or door storage for accessories that otherwise disappear.
Work with the closet’s geometry. Keep long dresses and coats where they will not interfere with shoes or floor storage. Use vertical space where it improves access, but do not fill every inch so tightly that returning an item becomes difficult.
5. Add only storage that solves a measured problem
Buy storage after the sort, measurements, and zones are complete. The right answer depends on the closet, wall construction, rental rules, budget, and what you actually own—not on a single product category.
| Observed need | Conditional solution | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Not enough room for short hanging garments | Hanging closet organizer, second hanging option, or adjustable closet organizer system | Rod height, garment clearance, width, and installation requirements |
| Folded clothes collapse or mingle | Shelf, labeled bin, basket, or shelf divider | Usable shelf depth, bin height, and how easily each category can be removed |
| Shoes consume the floor | Shoe storage rack, shelf solution, or defined floor zone | Door swing, ventilation needs, pair count, and clearance beneath hanging clothes |
| Accessories get lost | Shallow door storage, hooks, or a small container | Door operation, mounting method, and whether the storage will snag clothing |
| Seasonal items displace daily items | Labeled upper-shelf containers or another suitable storage location | Access, container dimensions, and the weight limits of the existing shelf |
A full closet organizer system may be worthwhile when the existing rod and shelves do not match the inventory of hanging, folded, shoe, and accessory storage. It is not automatically the best choice. A hanging closet organizer can add folded compartments without wall work; closet storage bins can contain a shelf category; a shoe storage rack can restore floor space; and door storage can make use of a surface that would otherwise be idle.

Use plain-language labels that answer one question: what goes back here? “Winter scarves,” “gym tees,” “black shoes,” and “travel bags” are more useful than decorative labels that require interpretation. Labels are especially helpful for upper-shelf containers and shared closets.
Return only the keep items to their assigned zones. If an item has no obvious home, treat that as useful information: either the category needs a clearer zone, or the item may not belong in this closet. Avoid creating a “miscellaneous” pile that becomes tomorrow’s backlog.
At the next seasonal wardrobe changeover, move the relevant group, check that containers still match their contents, and reassess what has stopped being useful. The maintenance schedule can be flexible; the important part is preserving obvious homes for the items you use.

A closet that stays organized is usually the simpler one
The goal is not a showroom closet or a perfect matching system. It is a closet where every item has an obvious home, daily clothing is easy to reach, and the storage you add has a measured purpose. Start with the space and the wardrobe you have, then let that information determine whether you need nothing more than labels—or a more substantial upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I measure before buying closet organizers?
Measure usable interior width, depth, and height; rod and shelf dimensions; floor clearance; door swing; and obstructions such as baseboards, vents, outlets, trim, or sloped ceilings. Also note rental restrictions before considering wall-mounted storage.
Do I need a closet organizer system?
No. A system can help when the existing rod and shelves do not match your storage needs, but shelves, labeled bins, a hanging closet organizer, shoe storage, or door storage may solve a smaller, measured problem with less work.
What should I do with clothes I no longer want?
Keep usable items, store seasonal pieces elsewhere when practical, donate clean usable items only if a local receiving organization accepts them, and discard or recycle damaged or soiled items as locally appropriate. Check the destination’s current acceptance rules first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do I keep a closet organized after the reset?
Give each category one named home, keep daily-use items within easy reach, and revisit seasonal storage at the next wardrobe changeover. If something repeatedly lands outside its zone, simplify or adjust that zone instead of adding a permanent pile.
The Bottom Line
Empty, sort, measure, zone, add only what solves a proven storage problem, then label. That sequence makes a closet easier to use without assuming every home needs a full organizer system.
