The Dyson V8 remains a good lightweight cordless vacuum, but the name now covers materially different products. This review separates the established V8 from the newer V8 Cyclone so you can judge the battery, runtime and price claims correctly.
The Dyson V8 is still a capable light cordless vacuum, but “V8” is no longer one product specification. The established V8 is the older two-mode, up-to-40-minute design. The newer Dyson V8 Cyclone adds three modes, a click-in removable battery and a claimed maximum runtime of up to 60 minutes. For a new purchase, the V8 Cyclone is the better choice when its price is genuinely competitive—but neither version is the best sole vacuum for a large home or frequent whole-home deep cleaning.
First: make sure you are comparing the right V8
Retail listings often shorten both machines to “Dyson V8,” which can make the newer Cyclone’s specifications look as though they apply to every V8. They do not.
| Feature | Established Dyson V8 | Dyson V8 Cyclone |
|---|---|---|
| Claimed maximum runtime | Up to 40 minutes | Up to 60 minutes in Eco mode, handheld |
| Controls | Two modes; trigger operation | Eco, Medium and Max; triggerless operation |
| Claimed suction | Do not assume the Cyclone rating applies | 150 air watts |
| Battery | Older configuration; not equivalent to a swappable Cyclone battery | Click-in, swappable seven-cell battery |
| Charge time | Varies by bundle; one independent test measured 242 minutes | Four hours |
| Listed weight / bin | 5.6 lb / 0.14 gal on one current U.S. listing | 5.74 lb / 0.14 gal |
This distinction changes the buying decision. The Cyclone’s removable battery is a real practical advantage for longer sessions: an optional spare can be charged or swapped rather than leaving the vacuum parked. It is not fair to criticize the Cyclone for the older V8’s battery limitation, nor is it fair to give an unspecified older V8 the Cyclone’s 150-AW, 60-minute or three-mode claims.

Cleaning performance: very good for routine work, with one hard-floor caveat
The V8 format remains especially good at the jobs that make cordless vacuums worthwhile: fast kitchen and entryway cleanup, stairs, sofas, upholstery, cars and short passes between more thorough cleans. It is light enough to carry around the house and converts quickly to a handheld.
Independent hands-on testing of the V8 Cyclone found excellent carpet performance, strong performance on tile and laminate, and effective pet-hair pickup from floors. Separate testing of a redesigned older V8 also found strong crevice pickup and carpet deep-cleaning results. Dyson’s Motorbar head is intended for both carpet and hard floors; its de-tangling vanes are designed to clear wrapped hair from the brush bar, while the bristle and carbon-fibre filament layout is intended to work into carpet and release fine dust from hard floors.
#1 Best Overall
- Lightweight for quick, versatile cordless cleaning.
- Up to 40 minutes of fade-free Dyson power.¹
- Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
- Choose between two cleaning modes for the right power where you need it.
- Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types. De-tangles wrapped long hair and pet hair as you clean.
The qualification matters: in testing of the older redesigned V8, the Motorbar pushed medium-size debris ahead of itself on hard flooring. So the fair expectation is strong pickup of dust, hair and normal day-to-day debris—not flawless collection of cereal-sized pieces. A bundle with a dedicated Fluffy or other soft hard-floor head may be preferable for homes dominated by hard floors and larger dry debris.

Battery life: the headline is not motorized-floor runtime
The V8 Cyclone’s “up to 60 minutes” claim is conditional. Dyson specifies that it is achieved in Eco mode in handheld configuration, and runtime varies with the selected power mode, attachment and floor type. That number is useful for occasional low-power tasks, but it is not a promise of an hour of motorized floor vacuuming.
| Model / setting | What the result means |
|---|---|
| V8 Cyclone, Eco | Up to 60 minutes is Dyson’s handheld, low-power maximum claim. |
| V8 Cyclone, Medium | An independent mixed-tool test recorded 28 minutes 21 seconds. |
| V8 Cyclone, Max | The same test recorded about 8 minutes; reserve it for stubborn spots. |
| Established V8 | Dyson advertises up to 40 minutes; an independent test measured roughly 8 to 41 minutes in its tested configuration. |
In practice, Eco or low power can suit frequent maintenance cleaning. Medium is the more realistic everyday setting for many homes, while Max is a short, high-suction burst mode rather than a whole-home setting. The Cyclone’s spare-battery option is therefore meaningful for a bigger home; it does not turn the small bin or short Max runtime into a deep-cleaning machine.
Day-to-day usability
The Cyclone improves the original V8 concept in sensible ways. Triggerless operation means you do not need to hold a trigger for an entire session; three modes give more control; the removable battery is easier to manage; and the wall dock keeps the vacuum and charging location organized. Its listed 5.74-pound weight is still comfortably portable. The established V8 is similarly light at 5.6 pounds on a current U.S. listing.
Both have a modest 0.14-gallon bin. That is fine when emptying after short runs, but it becomes a nuisance for heavy shedding, renovation dust, large debris or repeated full-house cleaning. Dyson’s point-and-shoot emptying system is convenient, though it should not be understood as a guarantee of never encountering dust: the result depends on the material in the bin and how it is emptied.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Cyclone is deliberately simple rather than premium-featured. Independent testing noted limited battery feedback and no detailed on-screen remaining-time estimate. Buyers who want a live countdown, automatic power adjustment or more automation should look higher in Dyson’s range or at competing premium cordless models.
Rank #2
- Powerful Dyson suction and run time to deep clean your home. Without the cord.
- Up to 60 minutes of fade-free Dyson power.¹
- Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
- Choose between three cleaning modes for the right power where you need it.
- Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types. De-tangles wrapped long hair and pet hair as you clean.
Filtration: what the specification does—and does not—say
Dyson rates the relevant V8 models’ fully sealed filtration at capturing 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. For the V8 Cyclone, Dyson attributes the figure to ASTM F1977 testing in Boost mode at SGS Laboratory USA in 2025.
That is a useful vacuum-filtration specification. It is not, by itself, evidence that the vacuum treats allergies, improves health or delivers a particular whole-room air outcome. Keep the claim at the level Dyson tests and states.
Who should buy a Dyson V8?
Buy the V8 Cyclone if you want a light, uncomplicated cordless vacuum for frequent cleaning and can find it at a good price. The swappable battery, three modes and claimed 60-minute Eco maximum make it a worthwhile development of the older V8.
- Small and medium homes cleaned in short, regular sessions.
- Mixed-floor homes needing routine dust and pet-hair pickup.
- Anyone who values a nimble machine for stairs, upholstery, vehicles and quick spills.
- Buyers who will benefit from a removable battery and can buy a compatible spare if needed.
Choose something more substantial, or keep a corded/bagged backup, if the V8 will be your only vacuum in a large, carpet-heavy home. The small bin, short high-power runtime and lack of precise remaining-runtime display make it less comfortable for sustained deep cleaning. A corded vacuum remains the more dependable choice for long cleaning sessions, heavy debris and consistently high suction.
Buying checklist: avoid a misleading V8 listing
- Confirm the exact name: “Dyson V8” and “Dyson V8 Cyclone” are not interchangeable.
- Check the floorhead: identify whether the box includes only a Motorbar or also a Fluffy/dedicated hard-floor head.
- Confirm battery design: do not assume every V8 has a click-in swappable battery.
- Read the included-tool list: car, pet and retailer bundles can differ substantially.
- Verify region, warranty, price and stock on the day you buy: Dyson’s own U.S. listings have shown different V8 bundles, availability messages and prices.
At the time covered by the research, Dyson’s U.S. V8 Cyclone car-cleaning-kit listing showed an in-stock $449.99 bundle, while other V8 pages showed notify-me or out-of-stock messaging. Treat that only as a snapshot, not a standing price or availability promise.

Use Dyson’s support materials for the exact machine and SV model, including its manuals, filter-washing instructions, troubleshooting and replacement-parts pages. For battery concerns, Dyson advises troubleshooting first. Reduced runtime outside Max mode or more than 12 flashing lights can indicate that battery replacement may be needed.

- Versatile and cordless for whole-home deep cleaning.
- 60% more power.¹ Up to 60 minutes of run time.²
- Three power modes. Auto mode for everyday cleaning tasks—the optimal balance of power and run time to preserve the lifespan of your battery. Eco mode for maximum run time. Boost mode for intensive spot cleaning.
- LCD screen shows power modes, maintenance alerts, and remaining run time to the second.
If replacing consumables, match the part to the exact V8/SV model and connector. A genuine V8 replacement battery and V8 pre-filter can be useful ownership purchases, but “V8 compatible” alone is not enough confirmation.
Verdict
The Dyson V8 Cyclone is the version worth seeking out: it preserves the light, effective V8 formula while fixing two real ownership frustrations with a removable battery and more usable power choices. It cleans carpet, normal hard-floor dust and pet hair well for its class, but its all-floor head is less assured with medium-size hard-floor debris and its high-power runtime is brief. Buy it for fast, frequent cleaning—not as a substitute for a high-capacity deep-cleaning vacuum in a large home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Dyson V8 Cyclone the same as the older Dyson V8?
No. The older V8 is a two-mode, up-to-40-minute design. The newer V8 Cyclone has Eco, Medium and Max modes, a click-in swappable battery, 150 AW claimed suction and an up-to-60-minute Eco handheld maximum.
Does the Dyson V8 Cyclone really run for 60 minutes?
Only in a limited condition. Dyson’s maximum applies to Eco mode in handheld configuration. Independent testing recorded 28 minutes 21 seconds in Medium with a mix of motorized tools and about eight minutes in Max.
Can a Dyson V8 be the only vacuum in a home?
It can work as the primary vacuum in a small home with frequent short cleaning sessions. For a large or carpet-heavy home, its 0.14-gallon bin and short high-power runtime make a more capable cordless or a corded/bagged backup the safer choice.
Can you swap the Dyson V8 battery?
The V8 Cyclone has a click-in, swappable seven-cell battery. Do not assume an older V8 has the same arrangement; check the exact model and connector before buying a replacement or spare.
Is the V8 good on hard floors?
It is strong for routine dust, hair and typical hard-floor debris, but independent testing of a redesigned older V8 found that the Motorbar could push medium-size debris ahead on hard floors. A dedicated soft hard-floor head can be preferable for homes with lots of hard flooring.
The Bottom Line
Best choice: buy the Dyson V8 Cyclone only after confirming the exact bundle and price. Its Eco-mode 60-minute claim is useful context, but expect roughly 28 minutes in Medium and about eight minutes in Max in independent mixed-tool testing.
