To identify the right VESA mounting screws, check the exact display manual, measure the hole spacing separately, and verify the screw diameter and length. A VESA pattern such as 100 × 100 mm describes the distance between holes—not the screw size. The safe screw must match the display’s thread, pass through the bracket and any spacers, and stay within the display maker’s maximum thread depth.
VESA pattern and screw size are different measurements
The VESA pattern is the center-to-center distance between the display’s mounting holes. Measure horizontally from the center of one hole to the center of the other, then vertically between the rows. Record both in millimeters. Common patterns include 75 × 75, 100 × 100, 100 × 200, 200 × 200, 400 × 200, and 600 × 400 mm. A 100 × 100 mm pattern does not mean the screws are 100 mm long or 100 mm in diameter. See Tripp Lite’s explanation of VESA patterns and the VESA mounting standard.

A VESA-compatible mount must also suit the display’s weight and pattern; compatibility does not mean every mount or screw set will fit. Ergotron’s FDMI guide describes interface categories and common hardware, but the display’s own instructions determine what to use.

- M4: The screw’s nominal metric diameter is about 4 mm. M5, M6, and M8 similarly indicate nominal diameters of about 5, 6, and 8 mm.
- 10 mm: The screw length. For ordinary pan-, button-, or hex-head screws, length is generally measured from beneath the head to the tip. For countersunk screws, it is generally measured from the top of the head to the tip.
- Thread pitch: The distance between threads. It is often omitted from consumer descriptions but must match the threaded insert.
- Head style: The head must clear the bracket and fit any countersink or recessed area. A correct thread with the wrong head may keep the bracket from sitting flat.
Hardware may be described as M4 × 10 mm, M4 × 12 mm, M6 × 12 mm, M6 × 20 mm, M8 × 16 mm, or M8 × 30 mm. These are examples, not a set of interchangeable choices. Screen size alone does not establish which one is right.

Find the exact display specification first
Look for the full model number on the rear label, original packaging, or the display’s information screen, then search the manufacturer’s support page or manual. Search the manual for “VESA mounting,” “wall mounting,” “mounting screw,” “thread depth,” or “interface pad.” It may specify screw diameter, length, permitted penetration, spacers, and even different hardware for different holes.
Model-specific instructions take precedence over a generic chart. For example, ViewSonic specifies M4 × 10 mm for one 100 × 100 mm monitor; that is an example for that model, not a rule for every display with the same pattern. Sony likewise directs users to the product manual or specifications where hardware differs from general guidance: Sony TV wall-mount guidance.
Identify the screw diameter and thread
Try a known metric screw by hand
- Use clearly identified M4, M5, M6, or M8 machine screws; do not use wood screws or imperial screws that merely look close.
- Align one screw straight with a threaded insert and turn it using your fingers only. It should start and turn smoothly for several turns.
- Stop and remove it immediately if it binds, feels gritty, stops abruptly, or requires force. Do not use a drill or impact driver to test fit.
- Confirm the fit in another mounting hole. Do not assume all holes use identical hardware: MSI documents a monitor example with different upper and lower M4 screw lengths.
Installation instructions also warn against forcing a screw or using excessive length; see this mounting instruction manual. A screw that starts but has the wrong pitch can still cross-thread.

Measure or verify an unidentified screw
A digital caliper can estimate outside diameter, but it cannot confirm thread pitch or compatibility. Use a metric thread-pitch gauge if the screw is unlabeled, starts imperfectly, or the manufacturer’s information is unavailable. Diameter alone is not enough: screws of the same nominal diameter can have different pitches.
Choose a safe screw length
The needed length depends on the whole mounting stack: the bracket thickness, any washer, any spacer, and the thread engagement required by the display. First check the manual for the maximum permitted screw penetration into the display. The screw must secure the bracket without reaching farther into the display than allowed.
- Measure the bracket thickness where the screw passes through.
- Add the thickness of any washer required by the bracket or display instructions.
- Add the spacer thickness, if the mounting area is recessed or the manual specifies a standoff.
- Check the display manual for permitted thread depth or maximum penetration and any required engagement.
- Select the shortest screw-and-spacer combination that securely clamps the bracket without bottoming out or exceeding the penetration limit.
A thin monitor-arm plate and a thick TV bracket can require different screw lengths on the same display. Washers, integrated hardware, and spacers change the stack too. Do not choose a longer screw on the assumption that it is stronger: excessive length can damage internal components. The mounting instructions above warn against screws that are too long.

Common screw specifications: useful examples, not guarantees
Ergotron’s guide lists these examples for the corresponding FDMI categories. They help narrow a search but do not replace the display’s own instructions.

Many small monitors use M4, while larger TVs often use M6 or M8; some products use M5. These are tendencies, not a way to identify an individual display. Sony’s examples associate several smaller display or pattern categories with M4 and larger TVs with M6 or M8. Always verify the exact model.
Recessed mounting holes: use spacers correctly
If the threaded holes sit in a recess, the bracket may not reach the display’s rear surface. Measure the recess from the rear surface to the hole opening, then use an appropriate spacer to bridge the gap without deforming the casing. Include the spacer and bracket thickness in the screw-length calculation, and keep the screw’s penetration within the display’s stated limit.

A longer screw alone is not necessarily the answer: it can bottom out or enter too far. Some installation manuals specify different screw lengths for different spacer thicknesses; see the FHP110 installation instructions.
Install the screws without damaging the display
- Place the display on a clean, padded, level surface, unless its manufacturer gives another method. Remove the stand if required.
- Position the bracket or arm without forcing it against the casing. Check that its holes align with the display’s threaded inserts.
- Start all four screws by hand before tightening any one of them. Each should turn smoothly.
- Tighten gradually in an alternating or diagonal sequence. Use the torque specified for the display or mount, if provided; do not transfer a torque value from another product.
- Stop if the casing flexes, the bracket will not sit evenly, a screw bottoms out, or resistance rises suddenly. Recheck the screw, stack thickness, and instructions.
- Inspect the finished installation and follow the mount manufacturer’s directions for any later check.
Thread-depth limits and torque are product-specific. One Pro-face mounting guide, for example, specifies an effective thread depth of 10 mm or less and a torque limit for its equipment. That figure must not be generalized to other displays.
Troubleshoot a fit problem
The screw is too short
If the threads barely catch, the bracket remains loose, or the screw turns without clamping the plate, check whether a spacer is required and measure the bracket-and-washer stack. Use a suitable longer screw only if the resulting penetration stays within the display’s limit.

The screw is too long
If it bottoms out before clamping the bracket, stops abruptly, or causes the casing to flex, remove it. Check the manual’s penetration limit and use a shorter screw or only the approved spacer arrangement. Do not continue tightening.
The diameter or pitch is wrong
A screw that will not enter, catches for only a turn or two, or feels unusually tight may be the wrong diameter or pitch. Remove it; never force it or enlarge the display’s insert. Verify the screw with the manual, caliper, and pitch gauge as appropriate.
The holes do not line up or there are no VESA holes
Do not force the bracket or drill the display casing. Check whether the mount supports the measured pattern and whether the display requires a model-specific adapter or a VESA adapter plate. Some external adapters create a VESA pattern for a display that lacks one; they are not the same as a built-in VESA interface. See VESA adapter guidance. A desk-clamp stand or arm that does not attach to the display may be another option.

Choose the right replacement hardware
If the exact model manual identifies the screw, buy manufacturer-specific replacement hardware or individual metric machine screws matching its diameter, pitch, head, and length. A universal kit is useful when the original hardware is missing, the recess requires spacers, or the correct size is not yet known—but the kit’s longest screw is not automatically suitable. Check each candidate against the manual and stack measurement before installation.
Some displays use standoffs, proprietary adapters, or different screws in different holes. Where instructions specify such hardware, a generic screw set may not be a safe substitute. Keep display-to-bracket hardware separate from wall-fastening hardware: display screws are metric machine screws, while the fasteners that secure a bracket to studs, masonry, or another surface must suit that substrate. Sony notes that wall hardware depends on the building material.
