Silica aerogel is made by forming a wet silica gel and removing liquid from its pores without letting the delicate solid network collapse. Published methods use laboratory processes and controls—not a kitchen-table recipe. The rapid route described below uses reactive chemicals, a hydraulic hot press, and supercritical extraction; the available sources do not establish that it can be carried out safely at home.
What making aerogel involves
Aerogel production has two main stages: form a gel network, then dry it while preserving its porous structure. In ordinary evaporation, liquid’s surface tension can pull on the pore walls and collapse the network. The drying method is therefore a defining part of the process, not a simple final step.

Can you make silica aerogel at home?
The sources document laboratory methods involving hazardous reagents, specialized drying equipment, and controlled ventilation. They do not establish that the rapid method is safely achievable at home. It should not be treated as an ordinary DIY construction or kitchen project. Any build-oriented work belongs under competent laboratory oversight with appropriate facilities and safety controls.

- Aerogels are the world's lightest, least dense solids, consisting of up to 99.8% air, and have been recognized with entries in the Guinness Book of World Records.
- This silica-based aerogel is hydrophobic (repels water) and has an incredibly low density. We include chunks of different sizes, with more than one between 0.5 and 1.5 inch
- NASA used aerogel to capture space dust in the STARDUST mission, where the aerogel gently slowed and trapping high-velocity particles of comet dust without damaging them!
- Our silica aerogel has an ethereal, translucent look with an opalescent, soft blue tint, resembling "frozen smoke" or a "solid cloud."
- Aerogel is a powerful insulator, and NASA also uses it to protect the Mars Exploration Rovers (Perseverance, Curiosity, Spirit, and Opportunity) from the harsh elements in space!
The rapid laboratory route
A JoVE protocol reports forming silica monoliths in eight hours or less. It describes 15–20 minutes of preparation followed by several hours in a hydraulic hot press for rapid supercritical extraction. Its specified molar ratio is TMOS:methanol:water:ammonia = 1.0:12.0:3.6:3.5 × 10−3. These are details of that protocol, not a general-purpose recipe or a guarantee of results with different equipment.
In the study’s mold, the reported cylindrical monoliths were 2.2 cm in diameter and 1.9 cm high. The authors describe low bulk and skeletal density, high surface area, and mesoporous morphology. Those findings apply to the reported method and setup; they should not be assumed for other formulations or processes.

How the drying routes differ
| Route described | Drying approach and process | What the source reports |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid JoVE protocol | Supercritical extraction in a hydraulic hot press; preparation takes 15–20 minutes, followed by several hours in the press. | Monoliths formed in eight hours or less; the study’s mold produced cylinders 2.2 cm across and 1.9 cm high. The authors describe low bulk and skeletal density, high surface area, and mesoporosity. JoVE procedure |
| Ambient-pressure study | Sol-gel preparation, aging, solvent exchange, and staged oven drying. | A laboratory-scale ambient-pressure process is described. The source does not establish equivalence to the rapid protocol. Ambient-pressure study |
| Supercritical CO2 study | Gel casting, aging, solvent exchange, and supercritical CO2 drying. | A separate laboratory-scale process is described; the source does not establish that its results match the other routes. CO2 route study |
These sources describe distinct workflows, not a controlled, like-for-like comparison of drying performance or final properties. The ambient-pressure and CO2 route links identify their respective publication platforms; the available citation details do not provide a more specific article URL.
Safety limits of the rapid protocol
The JoVE protocol’s Safety Considerations require eye protection during solution preparation and work with the hydraulic hot press. It specifies that TMOS, methanol, concentrated ammonia, and solutions containing them must be handled in a fume hood. It also calls for laboratory gloves, ventilation for the hot press because extraction releases hot methanol, removal of ignition sources from the vent path, and recommends a safety shield.
