The Attic24 Granny Stripe is a row-based crochet blanket made with alternating two-row color stripes and groups of three treble stitches. The pictured version uses 18 balls of Stylecraft Special DK and a 4 mm hook, but you can adjust the width by changing the starting chain while keeping its multiple-of-3-plus-2 count.

Materials and terminology

For the pictured Sunny Granny Stripe blanket, designer Lucy of Attic24 specifies 18 × 100 g balls of Stylecraft Special DK and a 4 mm hook. Treat those as the materials for that version, not a universal quantity: a wider or longer blanket needs more yarn, and a different yarn or tension can change the finished dimensions. Check your own gauge and decide on the desired size before you begin.

  • Yarn in your chosen colors; the design uses two rows per color stripe.
  • A 4 mm crochet hook for the pictured yarn and version. A larger hook can make the fabric and blanket larger; a smaller hook can tighten loose fabric.
  • Stitch markers to help count the first row, if useful.
  • A yarn needle for weaving in ends before the border.

The tutorial uses UK crochet terms: UK double crochet (dc) is US single crochet (sc), and UK treble crochet (tr) is US double crochet (dc). Follow the UK terms below; substituting US stitch names without conversion will make the stitches the wrong height.

Choose the starting width

The sample begins with chain 200. The pattern’s sizing rule is a starting chain that is a multiple of 3 plus 2. To make the blanket narrower, reduce the chain while preserving that count; to make it wider, increase it and plan for extra yarn. The tutorial does not establish a guaranteed finished measurement for every yarn, hook, or crocheter.

Keep the foundation chain loose enough to work into comfortably. If it is too tight, remake it using a larger hook for the chain, then return to the working hook. Attic24 suggests placing markers every 25 stitches to make the first-row count easier to check.

Make the foundation row

  1. Chain 200 for the pictured sample, or choose another count that is a multiple of 3 plus 2.
  2. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 UK dc in each chain across. The sample produces 199 dc.

Work the granny stripe rows

First granny row

Chain 3; this counts as the first UK tr. Work 1 more tr into the base of that chain. Skip 2 stitches, then work 3 tr into the next stitch. Continue across, skipping 2 stitches between each group of 3 tr. Finish with 2 tr in the last stitch, following the tutorial’s edge placement.

Build the two-row repeat

On subsequent granny rows, work each group of 3 tr into the space between the groups in the row below. At the far edge, anchor the row in the top of the turning chain as directed by the pattern. The stitches are largely the same from row to row, but the placement alternates with the row structure; the groups are not simply worked into every stitch.

Attic24 identifies Rows 3 and 4 as the repeat: “The rows that you’ve just made (Rows 3 and 4) form the pattern repeat.” Work two rows in each color to create one stripe, then change color and continue the same two-row sequence. Follow the tutorial’s turning-chain and edge instructions so the sides remain consistent.

Finish the blanket and add the border

Weave in all yarn ends before starting the border. The first border round needs different placement along the side edges, foundation edge, and corners, so work around the blanket using the tutorial’s placement guidance rather than treating every edge alike.

  • Along the row ends, place groups of 3 trebles as directed to cover the side edge.
  • At each corner, use the specified chain-2 turn to move around the corner.
  • Along the foundation edge, work into the edge as shown in the tutorial.

Attic24’s separate Spot On edging tutorial provides three further rounds. A little side wobble can be visible before the ends are woven in and the border is complete; the designer notes that the border can conceal slight edge unevenness.
