Yes—you can use a laser cutter to make a printmaking plate. Sheffield Hallam University documents laser-cut rubber for relief printing, and wood or plywood may be another path when the specific machine and facility approve the exact material. The key is to choose a printmaking method first: relief printing inks the raised surface; intaglio printing inks recessed areas.
Choose relief or intaglio before designing the plate
The intended printing process determines which parts of the plate need to hold ink. A laser-engraved design is not automatically suitable for both methods.
Relief printing: ink the raised surface
In relief printing, ink is applied to the non-recessed surface of a block, plate, or matrix, then that surface is brought into contact with paper, as UMass Amherst explains. Engraving selected areas can leave the uncut surface raised to carry ink. The design orientation and engraving depth depend on the artwork and setup; there is no universal laser recipe.
Sheffield Hallam University lists laser-cut rubber as an example of relief work in its printmaking workshop. That establishes a documented use, not approval of every rubber product or every laser. Follow the material and machine rules at the facility where you will work.

Intaglio: ink the recessed areas
Intaglio works in the opposite way: ink is pressed into depressed areas of a plate and transferred to paper, according to the University of Utah. Before choosing a substrate, ask the print shop whether the plate can hold ink as intended and whether its press and workflow can accommodate it. The available guidance does not establish that every laser-cut substrate is suitable for intaglio.

Wood and plywood are documented among materials used with Rutgers Makerspace CO2 lasers. That is an example of a facility’s capabilities, not blanket permission to cut any wood sheet. Plywood adhesives, coatings, and composition vary, and machine type, ventilation, and operator policy matter.

Before buying or cutting a sheet, give the machine operator the exact product or material specification and ask whether it is approved for that particular machine. Rutgers says unknown materials may ignite, fail to cut, or emit dangerous fumes. Tulane specifically warns that cutting PVC can release toxic gases and presents a fire risk. Do not rely on a generic online materials list as authorization.
- Confirm the substrate’s exact composition, including coatings and adhesives.
- Check that the facility approves it for the specific laser and ventilation setup.
- Ask the print shop whether the plate is compatible with the intended press and process.
- Complete required safety and basic-use training; Rutgers requires training for its CO2 and fiber lasers.

- Decide on relief or intaglio. Plan which areas should carry ink and how the plate will transfer it to paper.
- Submit the material and design for review. Ask the laser operator to approve the exact substrate and proposed job. The reviewed guidance does not establish universal power or speed settings, minimum line widths, plate thicknesses, or edition limits.
- Complete the facility’s induction or training. Use the machine only as authorized and follow its material chart, ventilation rules, and supervision requirements.
- Fabricate the plate according to shop procedure. Stop and consult staff if the material behaves unexpectedly; do not improvise settings or continue with a questionable material.
- Test-print and adjust with guidance. Check whether the raised or recessed areas transfer ink as intended. Ask the technician or print-shop staff before changing the laser design or printing setup.
- Follow the print studio’s rules for ink, cleanup, and waste. Laser safety does not cover the separate hazards introduced by printing materials.
Manage printing, cleanup, and fire risks
Printing and plate cleanup require their own precautions. Intaglio cleanup may involve solvents, and the University of Utah warns that solvent- or oil-soaked rags can spontaneously combust if stored improperly. Princeton advises users to know the materials in use, consult their safety data sheets, and take fire-prevention measures with oil-based printmaking materials.
Use the ventilation, protective equipment, rag-storage, and waste procedures specified by your printmaking studio. Sheffield Hallam’s workshop, for example, directs its own users to wear provided nitrile gloves and place waste in specified metal bins; those are local instructions, not universal substitutes for another studio’s rules.

What to confirm before committing to a plate
- Material approval: Is this exact sheet or rubber product permitted on this machine?
- Printing method: Will the plate be used for relief or intaglio, and does its surface suit that process?
- Press and workflow: Can the local print shop handle the plate’s material and format?
- Safe operating plan: Are training, ventilation, supervision, and cleanup procedures in place?
