A documented SawStop auxiliary-fence build uses two 24-inch pieces—3/4-inch hardwood and 1/2-inch plywood—joined with wood glue and countersunk screws. In the SawStop manual’s setup, the plywood lies flat on the table while the hardwood bears against and is clamped to the rip fence. Those dimensions and placements are specific to that example; check your saw’s manual and confirm fit, alignment, clearance, and secure clamping before cutting.
Materials and dimensions in the SawStop example
The SawStop 10-inch Professional Cabinet Saw manual provides one auxiliary-fence construction example. It calls for:
- Piece A: 24 inches long, 3/4-inch-thick hardwood.
- Piece B: 24 inches long, 1/2-inch plywood.
- Fasteners: wood glue and countersunk wood screws.
- Clamping: clamps to secure the completed assembly to the rip fence during installation.
These are the manual’s specifications, not universal dimensions for other saws or fences. See the SawStop 10-inch Professional Cabinet Saw manual for its illustrated construction and setup.
How to build the fence
- Cut the hardwood and plywood to the lengths specified for the SawStop example, checking your own saw’s manual and the intended operation before using those dimensions.
- Position piece A along the edge of piece B, as shown in the SawStop manual.
- Join the pieces with wood glue and countersunk wood screws. Keep the assembly rigid and ensure the fasteners will not interfere with the saw, workpiece, or intended cut.
- Allow the glue to cure according to its instructions before fitting the fence to the saw.
How to fit it to your rip fence
In the SawStop illustration, piece B rests flat on the saw table and piece A bears against the left side of the rip fence. The manual places the front edge of piece B 1–2 inches behind the table’s front edge and instructs the user to clamp piece A securely to the rip fence. This position and orientation describe that SawStop setup only.

Before cutting, consult the manual for your saw and verify that the auxiliary fence sits flat and securely, does not shift, and stays aligned with the rip fence. Check that it clears the blade and the saw’s guard, spreader or riving knife, and anti-kickback features for the operation. A fence that cannot be attached securely or that obstructs required safety equipment is not ready to use.
Use it without compromising saw safety
An auxiliary fence can provide a reference face or support for a particular operation; it does not prevent kickback and does not replace the saw’s guard, spreader or riving knife, or anti-kickback devices. OSHA explains that kickback can happen when the blade catches stock and throws it toward the operator. Its guidance recommends using a spreader to help prevent stock from squeezing the saw, anti-kickback fingers, a blade suitable for the cut, and stock guided parallel to the rip fence. Stand to the side of the blade, support stock, and wear eye and face protection. Read OSHA’s table-saw guidance.

- SPECS - ARF-48 | 48 Inch Table Saw Fence | 3-1/2" Tall | Built In T-Track Slots | 12" Material Support | 3 Sliding Clamping Blocks | Fence & Clamping Block Thickness Measure Exactly 2" | Made in USA
- STRAIGHTER, SMOOTHER CUTS - Clamp the Auxiliary Rip Fence to any table saw fence for a longer, straighter, and more precise reference surface - no twisting or warping like plywood fence faces.
- MORE CONTROL FOR BIG PROJECTS - The 48" length and 12" material support keep panels balanced and stable on the infeed or outfeed side of the blade for safer, cleaner cuts.
- VERSATILE SETUP OPTIONS - Configure high, low, or L-fence positions to match the task - from thin rips to box lids to edge jointing straight stock.
- MADE IN THE USA - Built and inspected to our strict standards in Strongsville, Ohio, ensuring top-tier accuracy and durability.
- Keep the applicable guard, spreader or riving knife, and anti-kickback features in the configuration required by the saw maker and the operation.
- Check that the rip fence is locked before starting. Use stock that is suitable for the cut; bowed or crooked stock can shift and contribute to kickback.
- Guide the workpiece parallel to the rip fence, and arrange suitable infeed and outfeed support for the stock and offcuts.
- Use a push device when the procedure calls for it. The SawStop manual says to move the workpiece along piece B and use the push block to finish when a hand comes within 6 inches of the blade. Oregon State University’s training specifies a push stick when ripping stock narrower than 5 inches. Follow the procedure for your saw and shop rather than treating either measurement as a universal rule.
- If a cut cannot be completed, stop and wait for the blade to stop before removing stock, as directed by Oregon State University’s table-saw training.
Check requirements for your saw and workplace
Table dimensions, rip-fence geometry, guards, and cutting operations differ. The SawStop example does not establish a fit or safe clearance for another saw, and the available sources do not establish a tested performance benefit for this design. Do not assume its measurements will work unchanged on your machine.
For workplace machinery, OSHA’s 29 CFR § 1910.213 includes requirements for hand-fed circular ripsaws, including a hood above the table and workpiece, a spreader, and nonkickback fingers. It also addresses fences secured without changing alignment with the saw. This workplace standard is not a substitute for checking your saw maker’s instructions and applicable local rules, and adding a wooden auxiliary fence does not discharge those requirements.
