To make an indoor compost bin that turns kitchen scraps into usable compost, build a ventilated, lidded worm bin from two nested plastic tubs: the upper tub holds bedding, worms and food scraps; the lower tub catches drainage. Add damp shredded paper or cardboard, red wigglers and small amounts of buried plant-based scraps. A covered countertop caddy only stores scraps—it does not compost them.

What you need to build an indoor worm bin

  • Two plastic tubs that nest, or one tub and a separate catch tray. Choose a lidded, preferably dark upper tub; the lower container should have no holes so it can catch drainage.
  • A drill and bits, fine nonmetallic window screen, and waterproof glue for covering the holes.
  • Shredded paper or cardboard for bedding, a little clean soil if desired, and water.
  • Red wigglers, also called redworms; Eisenia fetida is the commonly used species in the cited U.S. guidance.
  • A small lidded kitchen-scrap container. A trowel is useful for burying scraps and moving finished compost.

Use materials you already have where practical; a branded composter is not necessary. The EPA’s example uses an approximately 18-gallon upper bin, but that is one design, not a required size. University of Maryland Extension’s separate example is 21 inches long by 15 inches wide and 5–8 inches deep—about 2.2 square feet—and is described as able to handle 2–3 pounds of scraps per week. Those dimensions and capacity belong to that particular guide, not every bin.

How to make the bin from storage tubs

  1. Set up the tubs. Put the lidded upper tub inside a second tub, or place it above a catch tray. The lower container collects excess liquid.
  2. Add ventilation and drainage. Drill screened ventilation holes near the upper sides and drainage holes near the bottom of the upper tub. In one EPA design, the upper sides have two 1-inch holes and the bottom has four 1/8-inch holes near the corners. Cover each opening with fine nonmetallic screen secured with waterproof glue. Other extension designs use different hole patterns, so follow these as an example rather than a universal specification. Let the glue dry completely before adding bedding or worms.
  3. Prepare the bedding. Tear or shred paper or cardboard, wet it, then drain or wring it until damp but not puddled. Loosen it rather than packing it tightly. You can mix in a little clean soil if following the EPA example.
  4. Add the worms. Put the red wigglers on top of the bedding, close the lid and give them time to settle before feeding. Keep the bin out of direct sunlight.
  5. Start feeding gradually. Bury a small amount of scraps in a pocket in the bedding, cover it completely, and replace the lid. Wait until the earlier food has mostly been eaten before adding more.

Which worms to use and how to keep the bin

Use red wigglers/redworms rather than assuming any bait worm will suit an indoor bin. The EPA recommends sourcing worms from a worm grower or another vermicomposting bin owner and warns about invasive jumping worms. Its home-bin guidance calls for one pound, about 1,000 worms; University of Maryland Extension recommends at least one pound for its small-bin example and describes that amount as roughly 500–1,000 worms.

Keep the bedding loose and damp, not waterlogged. University of Maryland Extension gives 55–75°F as an effective range for feeding and reproduction; Iowa State Extension gives 55–77°F and identifies 65–70°F as ideal. These are practical guide ranges, not a need to control a household bin to an exact temperature. Avoid freezing temperatures, direct sun, standing water and compacted wet bedding. Elevating the working bin over a catch tray also leaves room for airflow and collects drainage.

What to feed an indoor worm bin

Suitable beginner inputs

  • Most fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Coffee grounds and paper filters
  • Tea bags without staples or plastic
  • Crushed eggshells

Cut larger scraps into smaller pieces to help them break down. Bury each addition and cover it fully with bedding; exposed food can attract fruit flies. Keep scraps in a separate lidded container until you are ready to feed the bin.

What to leave out

  • Meat, fish, dairy, bones, fats and oils
  • Pet waste or litter
  • Non-compostable materials and chemically treated plant material
  • Citrus, onion and garlic, especially in large amounts

For a beginner worm bin, leave out citrus, onion and garlic: guidance varies, but the conservative approach is to avoid them or use very little. Feed modestly and wait for the existing scraps to be consumed. Extension and agency guides differ on feeding schedules; the useful rule is to watch how quickly the worms process food rather than feeding on a rigid calendar.

How to prevent odors and fruit flies

A well-maintained worm bin should not smell strongly or attract pests, but that depends on its condition. The EPA says, “If your worm bin is properly maintained, it should not emit odors or attract pests.” Fully bury food, keep a layer of moist bedding over it, and avoid adding more scraps than the worms can process.

  • Fruit flies: Bury exposed scraps, add a moist bedding cover and keep the lid on. University of Maryland Extension also suggests flypaper under the lid or a sticky yellow card beside the bin.
  • Bad odor: Too much food or poor airflow and moisture conditions may be the cause. Remove rotting food, pause feeding for a week, check ventilation and adjust moisture.
  • Wet or compacted bedding: Check that drainage holes are open, gently loosen the contents, and add fresh dry bedding.
  • Worms trying to escape: Check whether bedding is too wet or too dry and make sure the bin is covered and in suitable conditions. Iowa State Extension notes that worms may crawl out during their first days after introduction.

When the compost is ready and how to use it

Finished vermicompost is dark, crumbly and mostly processed. Timing depends on the bin, feeding and conditions: University of Maryland Extension says a noticeable amount may form in 6–8 weeks, while Iowa State Extension describes finished material as typically taking several months. These are different milestones, not a guaranteed harvest date.

To separate worms from finished material, move new feeding to one side of the bin for a couple of weeks or, over time, shift feeding to one side so worms migrate toward fresh bedding. Collect the more finished compost from the other side. Use vermicompost as a soil amendment or top dressing. For indoor or outdoor container potting mix, University of Maryland Extension advises using no more than one-quarter vermicompost by volume. Use pure castings sparingly around seedlings because soluble salts may be high.
