To make a miter joint for a square corner, cut two mating pieces at 45 degrees so their angled faces meet to form a 90-degree corner. Accurate setup and a dry fit matter more than the tool you use: test the angle on scrap, check the assembled corner, and reinforce the joint if its intended use calls for more strength than glue alone can provide.
Choose a cutting method

| Method | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Miter saw | Convenient repeated cuts in stock that fits the saw’s capacity. | Check the setup with scrap cuts and follow the manual for your specific saw. WOOD’s miter-saw guide covers practice cuts and fit checks. The DEWALT DWS780 manual gives instructions for that model. |
| Table saw with a miter gauge or jig | Miter cuts when a table saw and suitable guiding setup are available. | Practice on scrap and verify the resulting angle; see WOOD’s guide. |
| Circular saw with a guide | Guided cuts where the saw and stock can be securely supported. | Check the cut angle before using final pieces; Kreg’s 45-degree cutting guide describes several methods. |
| Hand saw and miter box | Manual cutting for learning or occasional miters. | Keep the stock secure and check the cut. This Old House’s guide recommends starting with a wooden miter box when learning. |
A combination square or straightedge can help check an individual cut; a framing square can help check whether the assembled parts form a right angle. Kreg describes these checks.

- Mark the parts consistently. Identify the outside and inside faces of the assembly, then mark each piece so you can keep the intended orientation clear.
- Set the cut angle. For a square corner, set the tool to 45 degrees. Other project geometries may call for different angles.
- Make a test cut. Cut scrap first. Check the cut with a combination square or straightedge, and adjust the setup if needed. Guides from WOOD and Kreg recommend practice and verification before cutting final parts.
- Cut the matching pieces in opposite orientations. Arrange the pieces so their sloped faces meet when brought together; two identical 45-degree settings do not mean the parts should face the same way.
- Dry-fit and check the corner. Bring the pieces together without glue. Inspect the seam and use a framing square to check the assembled corner. Correct the setup or cut before moving on if the fit or angle is wrong.
Fix gaps before assembly
A visible gap is a reason to inspect the setup, not to reach for filler as the default fix. Check that the tool is set to the intended angle, the workpiece is positioned correctly, and the stock lies flat against the fence and table. Inspect both faces of the cut and repeat the test-and-check process with scrap before recutting final pieces. A sharp, clean blade suited to the tool and material also helps produce a clean cut. Kreg describes checking miters with a combination square, framing square, or straightedge.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL 15 AMP MOTOR - Delivers 4,800 RPM for quick, detailed cuts
- DUAL BEVEL – Perform cuts in four positive stop positions at 48° & 45° left, 0°, and 45° right
- LED SHADOW LINE - Provides high precision cuts with greater accuracy than lasers
- 2x12 CUTTING CAPACITY – Cross cuts lumber up to 2x12 at 90 degrees, and 2x8 lumber at 45 degrees
- CUTS AT COMMON ANGLES - Cuts up to 50 degrees left and right with 11 positive stops at most used angles
Glue and clamp the joint
Once the dry fit is satisfactory, apply an appropriate wood glue to the mating faces and clamp the assembly with a method suited to its shape and material. Follow the glue label for curing time and conditions; a clamp should hold the faces together without shifting the parts out of alignment.
A clean-looking miter and a strong joint are different things. Fine Woodworking cautions against relying on a miter as solely a glue joint for most constructions and describes biscuits, splines, or keys as reinforcement options. Choose reinforcement based on the project’s loads and intended use; a decorative frame does not necessarily need the same treatment as a heavily stressed assembly. Fine Woodworking’s miter-reinforcement overview discusses these options.

Make powered cuts safely
- Read and follow the manual for your own saw; instructions and clearances can differ by model.
- Keep the guard working and adjusted as the manufacturer specifies. OSHA’s Miter Saws eTool says, “Always wear eye and face protection.”
- Secure the workpiece and keep it stationary against the fence and table. The DEWALT DWS780 manual recommends clamps whenever possible and warns against freehand cutting; those directions are specific to that model, so use your saw’s own instructions. DEWALT DWS780 manual
- Keep hands a safe distance from the blade, following the tool maker’s directions, and never bypass the guard.
