A complete design needs separate logic to interpret messages and an appropriately rated switching stage. Whether the module can connect at all depends on local operator service, the SIM, and the exact module board.
What the SIM900A does in a home-automation system
The SIM900A is a GSM/GPRS cellular module. Its role is to communicate with a cellular network and exchange information with a separate controller through AT commands. The SIM900A documentation describes SMS and other communication capabilities, including TCP/IP-related functions; those capabilities do not make the module a complete automation system.

In an SMS-controlled design, the module can receive a text message and pass its contents to the controller. The controller—not the SIM900A—must decide what the message means and whether the requested action is permitted. A separate electrical interface is responsible for switching the load.
The SIM900A manual documents operation on EGSM 900 MHz and DCS 1800 MHz bands. Check that a local operator still provides compatible service on the needed bands before choosing this module. Compatibility also depends on the SIM and the exact development board. The available documentation does not establish present-day 2G coverage for any particular country or carrier. See the SIM900A User Manual and the SIM900A Specification.

- The onboard high‑efficiency DCDC circuit can stabilize the 5‑18V power supply at about 3.8V.
- The device supports multiple of mobile phone cards, and supports 2G networks, as long as the card is an ordinary mobile phone card, whether it is a 4G or 2G card.
- Performance :The onboard high?efficiency DCDC circuit can stabilize the 5?18V power supply at about 3.8V.
- Performance :The onboard high?efficiency DCDC circuit can stabilize the 5?18V power supply at about 3.8V.
- Standard antenna, very good , comparable to non‑low cost spring antenna.
How the three parts of the design fit together
- Cellular communication: The SIM900A connects to compatible GSM service and handles SMS communication under AT-command control.
- Command handling: A separate microcontroller or other controller reads incoming message data, checks it, and determines the requested action.
- Load switching: A separate, appropriately rated switching interface performs the electrical switching. The cellular module does not directly switch an appliance.
This separation matters for both design and safety. An SMS is a message, not a safety-rated control signal. The controller needs defined rules for accepted commands, and the switching hardware must suit the load and installation.
What to check before building
- Network compatibility: Confirm the operator’s current service and frequency-band support in the intended location, then check that the SIM and exact board can use that service.
- Board documentation: SIM900A boards can differ. Consult the manual for the module and documentation for the specific development board before designing power supplies or signal connections.
- Control behavior: Decide how the controller will validate commands and handle invalid, repeated, or unexpected messages. The cited module documents do not establish authentication practices, replay protection, or SMS delivery guarantees.
- Switching and installation: Use switching equipment rated and certified for the intended application. Keep low-voltage electronics isolated from hazardous mains circuitry, and obtain qualified electrical guidance for any mains installation.
The available documentation does not specify a complete relay schematic, enclosure, electrical rating, or safe mains-installation procedure for a home-automation build. Do not infer those details from the module’s cellular specifications.

SIMCom describes the A7682E as an LTE Cat 1 product that also supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and presents compatibility with SIM800C and SIM868 series modules as a migration aid. That does not establish that it is a physical, firmware, or electrical drop-in replacement for a SIM900A development board. Review the exact documentation for both products and the board before planning a migration. See SIMCom’s A7682E product page.
The SIM900A should also not be confused with the SIM900. SIMCom’s SIM900 specification describes a different, quad-band module; its specifications should not be transferred to the SIM900A without checking the documentation for the exact part. The SIM900 specification and SIM900 document index concern the SIM900 documentation set, not proof of SIM900A board compatibility.

When comparing a 2G design with a newer module, evaluate local operator support and bands, board-level electrical and firmware compatibility, the SMS or data functions the project needs, and the availability of documentation for the precise hardware. The cited sources do not establish a complete part-for-part comparison or local coverage result.
