Most seeds do not need an overnight soak before planting. Peppers, tomatoes, lettuce and radishes are examples that germinate readily when sown in suitable warmth and moisture, according to University of Minnesota Extension. But the evidence does not support a definitive list of 15 crops that should never be soaked: whether a treatment helps depends on the crop, seed coat and packet directions.

Why a list of 15 “never-soak” seeds is misleading

Soaking is not a universal step in germination. Seeds need the right combination of moisture, air and temperature; some also have light requirements. Many easy-germinating seeds can simply be sown into a moist seedbed. Others have dormancy or hard coats that may call for a specific treatment. Florida IFAS recommends following crop-specific directions and starting with good-quality seed from a trusted source in its seed-starting guidance.

That makes “15 seeds you should not soak” an unreliable absolute. The named examples below are seeds that generally do not need presoaking—not seeds that are harmed by any contact with water before planting.

Seeds that usually do not need a presoak

Pepper

Minnesota Extension lists peppers among seeds that germinate readily in warm, moist conditions. Sow according to the packet rather than adding an overnight soak by default.

Tomato

Tomato seeds are another easy-germinating example in Minnesota Extension’s guidance. Moist growing conditions matter; a presoak is not a general prerequisite.

Lettuce

Lettuce is listed as readily germinating when conditions are moist and warm. Its small seed is usually sown shallowly: UMass Amherst recommends no more than 1/4 inch for lettuce and carrots, then watering gently and keeping the seedbed moist until emergence.

These four examples are the strongest supported answer to the “which seeds?” question. They illustrate when a soak is usually unnecessary, not a scientifically established list of 15 seeds to avoid soaking.

When soaking or another seed treatment may help

Hard-coated or dormant seeds are a different case. Minnesota Extension names okra and lupine as examples whose coats may need nicking or an overnight soak. Iowa State describes a more specific treatment for sweet pea: scarify the seed coat, then soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing, as explained in its direct-seeding guidance. That sweet-pea treatment should not be generalized to edible garden peas or other seeds.

Soaking and scarification are not interchangeable terms. Soaking exposes seed to water; scarification physically weakens or breaks the seed coat. Cold conditioning is another distinct treatment. Use only the method called for by crop-specific directions, rather than assuming all large seeds need soaking or all small ones must avoid it.

Plant seeds for their conditions, not by a blanket rule

Seed depth, moisture, temperature and light can matter more than an unnecessary presoak. Small seeds are generally sown shallowly, but exact instructions differ by crop and variety. UMass advises watering newly planted seed with a fine shower and keeping it moist until seedlings appear. Avoid washing seeds away or leaving the soil waterlogged.

Iowa State’s germination table shows how requirements vary even among common vegetables. It lists lettuce at 60–70°F with a light requirement, while radish is listed at 55–75°F with a dark requirement. Those are the table’s crop guidelines, not guarantees for every cultivar or growing setup. Its stated emergence ranges are beans, 8–10 days; carrots, 7–21 days; lettuce, 7–14 days; peas, 9–14 days; and radish, 3–4 days. They describe expected emergence ranges, not evidence that soaking speeds germination.

A practical decision before sowing

  1. Read the seed packet. Follow its directions for treatment, sowing depth, temperature and light; check local Extension advice if instructions are unclear.
  2. Skip a routine overnight soak for easy germinators. Peppers, tomatoes, lettuce and radishes generally need suitable sowing conditions, not a presoak.
  3. Use a treatment only when specified. For seeds such as okra, lupine or sweet pea, confirm the recommended method and whether it involves soaking, scarification or both.
  4. Sow at the stated depth and water gently. Keep the seedbed moist through emergence without waterlogging it.
