A 45-gallon barrel with 3-inch openings is one documented design—not a universal template—so adapt the layout to your barrel, plants and conditions.
Choose a suitable barrel and plan the tower
Use a food-grade plastic barrel whose previous contents are known and appropriate for growing edible crops. Do not use a drum with an unknown history: a barrel may have held pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals, and washing cannot establish that an unknown or contaminated container is safe for food crops.
Before modifying the barrel, check it for cracks, brittleness, distortion and a stable base. A filled, wet tower is heavy; set it on a firm, level support that can safely carry the load. One barrel-tower contributor used blocks, but the available guidance provides no engineered load rating for that arrangement. Wash a suitable barrel with hot water and dish soap, then let it dry before cutting.
Choose a location with light appropriate to the plants you intend to grow and room to water and inspect the tower. The sources do not establish a particular plant count or guaranteed yield for this design.

Choose a watering approach
Water must reach the growing medium throughout the height of the tower. Two related tower guides describe different approaches; they are options to adapt, not interchangeable specifications or a tested performance comparison.
| Approach | What it involves | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Perforated center pipe | A contributor’s 45-gallon barrel design used a roughly 3-inch rain pipe through the center, extending above the barrel, with holes smaller near the bottom and larger toward the top. | The contributor intended the hole pattern to reduce growing-medium flushing. This is an anecdotal design detail, not a validated hydraulic rule. Make sure the pipe can be filled and inspected. |
| Drip tubing and soaker hose | UC Cooperative Extension describes optional small-diameter central drip tubing and soaker hose in a separate, bucket-based strawberry tower. | Consider the water source, how easily the tubing can be adjusted or removed, and whether it wets the medium along the column. The UC guide does not establish this setup as a barrel specification. |
Whichever approach you choose, check the medium at several heights after watering rather than assuming water at the top has reached every planting pocket.

Mark and cut the planting openings
For a reference layout, a Square Foot Gardening Forum contributor described a 45-gallon screw-top barrel with staggered 3-inch side openings, horizontal rows about six inches apart, and the lowest six inches left without side openings. The post was dated December 26, 2022. These are dimensions from one builder’s design, not a tested standard for all barrels, plants or climates.
- Set the barrel upright and mark vertical divisions and horizontal rows before cutting, checking that openings will be staggered rather than directly stacked.
- Mark the openings at a size suited to the plants and retaining method. The example uses a 3-inch hole cutter; confirm the barrel wall and your chosen cutter are compatible.
- In the example layout, leave the lowest six inches without side openings. The contributor used this lower zone as part of a reservoir concept, but the source does not establish that it is best for every medium or setting.
- Cut carefully with an appropriate drill and hole cutter, following the tool maker’s instructions. Remove sharp burrs and loose plastic before handling the barrel or adding plants.
Install the watering tube, retain the soil and provide drainage
Fit the watering system
If using a center pipe, place it upright and keep it centered while filling. The forum contributor’s pipe and hole pattern are a reported build detail; the exact hole sizes and spacing are not established as a general rule. If using drip tubing or a soaker hose, arrange it so it can be reached for inspection and adjustment.

Keep growing medium behind the openings
Line the openings or fit small retaining cups so the growing medium stays in the barrel while plants grow through the sides. The forum build describes cut plastic-bottle cups or weed barrier. UC Cooperative Extension’s separate strawberry tower guide describes burlap, weed-block cloth or garden-cover material for lining openings. Choose a material that stays in place and does not prevent water from reaching the planting medium.
Let excess water escape
Provide drainage through the barrel bottom. Oklahoma State University advises that the number and size of drainage holes depend on the growing medium and plants; its guidance does not specify a universal hole pattern for this barrel. After the first thorough watering, observe whether water drains and whether the medium remains excessively wet. Adjust the drainage if needed, while keeping the support stable and avoiding a setup that leaves water pooling around the base.

Fill the barrel and plant it
- Choose a well-draining potting medium. For strawberries, UC Cooperative Extension recommends adding about one-third finished compost to the potting mix, or using fertilizer at the rate on its package. This guidance comes from its strawberry tower instructions, not a trial of the barrel design.
- Add the medium gradually, settling it gently around the watering tube and behind the lined openings. Avoid packing it so tightly that water cannot move through the column.
- Plant through the side openings and at the top. The reported barrel build and UC guide both concern strawberries, but neither establishes that every crop will thrive in this layout. Select compact plants suited to the available light and rooting volume.
- Water thoroughly after planting, checking that the medium becomes moist throughout without becoming waterlogged. Confirm that excess water exits through the bottom.
Maintain moisture and nutrients
Check moisture in more than one part of the tower and water in response to conditions. Tall container plantings can dry faster than in-ground gardens, according to Oklahoma State University’s container-garden guidance, so a fixed watering schedule may not suit changing weather, plant growth or exposure. UC Cooperative Extension advises moistening its strawberry tower throughout without soaking it.
Follow the fertilizer label if using a packaged product. The barrel contributor reported feeding strawberries diluted tomato feed twice a week and refreshing the medium after three years; those are personal practices, not general feeding instructions or a guaranteed replacement interval.

This article describes a soil-filled barrel planter. Oklahoma State University’s vertical hydroponic design is a different system involving a nutrient-solution tank, pump and net pots. Its parts and operating instructions should not be mixed into the soil-filled build. Oklahoma State advises food-grade materials when modifying hydroponic tower materials, but that separate guidance does not make an unknown-history barrel suitable for edible crops.
