Blow through the straw: air makes the stretched balloon membrane vibrate, and the connected tube and bottle shape the sound. The result is a hands-on experiment, not a reliably tuned instrument; small differences in tension, airflow, and construction can change whether it sounds and what you hear.
What you need
- A small, empty plastic water bottle
- A straw
- Paper to roll into a tube
- A balloon
- A rubber band
- Tape
- Scissors
This materials list follows the Exploratorium’s 2006 “Make a membranophone” guide. The guide involves cutting a bottle and making a hole in it, so work carefully and ask an adult for help if needed.
How to build it
- Make the bottle opening. Carefully cut a small hole near the top of the bottle, just large enough for the straw. Then cut the bottle in half.
- Prepare the paper tube. Roll a piece of paper into a tube and cut holes in it. This tube will sit in the bottle opening.
- Make the membrane. Cut off the narrow end of the balloon so you have a flat rubber sheet.
- Fit the inlet and tube. Insert the straw through the small hole near the top of the bottle. Place the paper tube in the bottle’s opening and tape around the joint to help seal it.
- Stretch the membrane. Cover the bottle’s cut end with the balloon sheet and hold it in place with the rubber band. Keep the sheet stretched rather than slack.
- Try it. Blow steadily through the straw. If it does not sound, check the membrane tension and seals before changing other parts.
These steps describe the Exploratorium bottle design. A related Caltech LIGO-hosted “Membrane Aero-phone” guide uses a cylinder made from PVC or cardboard and a balloon or latex glove instead. In that variant, the straw is taped into a small membrane opening to reduce air leakage, and the membrane assembly is taped to the cylinder. The two guides describe related builds, not a single combined design.
Why the membrane makes a sound
A membrane is a stretched sheet that vibrates. The Exploratorium defines a membranophone as “an instrument that produces sound with a resonating membrane.” In this pipe experiment, blowing supplies airflow that sets the membrane moving while the connected tube and bottle’s air space contribute resonances.

The LIGO-hosted guide describes a repeating action: air pressure lifts the stretched membrane, air passes into the cylinder, and the membrane returns to seal it. That cycle, together with the tube’s resonances, shapes the sound. Tube length affects which resonances can be heard, but the guides do not give a dependable formula for tuning this particular homemade instrument to a specific note. Membrane tension and geometry matter too, so do not expect a guaranteed pitch or a uniform sound from every build.
If it does not make a sound
- Check the membrane. It needs tension to vibrate and return across the opening. Try adjusting how tightly the balloon sheet is stretched.
- Check for leaks. Inspect the taped tube-to-bottle joint and the membrane edge. Air escaping at a connection can interfere with the intended airflow.
- Check the airway. Make sure the straw is not blocked and that air can pass through it.
- Blow steadily. Once the parts are secure, try a controlled, continuous breath rather than changing several parts at once.
If it still does not work, vary one feature at a time. The Exploratorium suggests trying different hole placements, tighter or looser balloon membranes, and different bottle sizes. You can also compare tube lengths. These are experiments, not guaranteed improvements: record what you changed and whether the sound changed, so you can tell which adjustment mattered.

What to compare as you experiment
There is no tested ranking of materials or dimensions in the cited build guides. Instead, use these as practical comparison points, changing one at a time:
- Membrane: Compare balloon material and how easily it can be stretched and held securely.
- Tube: Try different lengths or bores; tube length affects the resonances that can be heard.
- Air inlet and seals: Compare inlet placement and how well the joints prevent unwanted leakage.
- Holes: Change hole placement and observe the effect rather than assuming one arrangement is best.
- Maintenance: Note how easily you can replace the membrane or repair a joint after repeated use.
How this differs from a kazoo or didgeridoo
“Membranophone” is the broad category for instruments that use a vibrating membrane. The Exploratorium guide groups drums and kazoos in that category, but this bottle build is specifically an air-driven pipe experiment: you blow through an inlet and the membrane interacts with air in a connected tube or chamber. A kazoo is typically played by vocalizing into it, rather than by using this bottle-and-pipe arrangement.

It is also not a didgeridoo. The University of New South Wales’ acoustics explanation of the didgeridoo describes a closed pipe excited by the player’s vibrating lips, with sound shaped by interaction among the pipe, lips, airflow, and vocal tract. That is a different sound-production mechanism from the membrane-driven build here.
