A DIY sun tracker is easiest to justify as a small learning project, not as a guaranteed way to improve a full-size solar installation. For a lightweight demonstration, two photoresistors, a servo, and an Arduino-style controller can turn a small panel toward brighter light. A real outdoor tracker needs a purpose-designed frame, drive system, controls, and site-appropriate structural and electrical protection. Tracking may capture more energy than a fixed panel, but the gain and payback depend on the site and system; the available sources do not establish a universal percentage.
Choose the tracker type before choosing parts
A fixed mount holds a panel in one position. A tracker changes its orientation to follow the sun. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that ground-mounted trackers can help capture more energy: single-axis systems generally move east to west during the day, while dual-axis systems can also adjust to keep modules pointed more directly toward the sun. The added movement comes with added mechanical and maintenance demands.
| Approach | Movement | Most appropriate for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed mount | None | Low-complexity installations and a baseline for comparison | Simple to maintain, but does not follow the sun. |
| Single axis | Usually east to west over the day | A ground-mounted tracker or a mechanical learning build | Needs a robust frame, drive, controls, and maintenance; adjacent-row shading may reduce the benefit. |
| Dual axis | Daily east-west movement plus seasonal elevation or azimuth adjustment | A demonstration or application where pointing the module toward the sun is especially useful | More mechanical and control complexity; extra energy capture should be compared against the added cost for the actual site. |
For a building or ground-mounted project, compare a tracker with a fixed installation before building. The Department of Energy’s overview of solar photovoltaic system design describes the role of trackers and the simpler maintenance profile of fixed mounts.
Build a small educational tracker
A classroom-scale tracker is a reasonable way to learn how light sensors, control logic, and motion work together. Science Buddies describes a project in which two photoresistors detect the relative light on either side of a small panel. When one sensor is shaded, an Arduino-based controller tells a servo to turn the panel until the sensor readings become more similar. The project recommends prior Arduino experience.

Prototype components
- An Arduino-compatible controller board
- Two photoresistors (LDRs)
- A hobby servo
- A small solar panel suitable for a model
- Wiring and a lightweight support that lets the servo move the model safely
These components describe a demonstration architecture, not a specification for a full-size PV module. The project source does not establish that a hobby servo can support a real panel. For the project’s build details and educational guidance, see Science Buddies’ solar tracker project.
Basic control sequence
- Mount the two photoresistors on opposite sides of a small divider so the divider casts a shadow when light arrives from one side.
- Read both sensor values with the controller and compare them.
- If one sensor is receiving less light, command the servo to rotate the model toward that side by a small amount.
- Repeat the comparison, stopping or reducing movement when the readings are close enough for the demonstration.
Keep the model’s moving parts light and within the servo’s intended use. A real outdoor panel needs a different mechanical design and drive system; the sensor-and-servo arrangement should not be scaled up by simply attaching a larger panel.

What changes in a larger single-axis build
A published DIY example uses a bolted iron structure, aluminum profiles selected for its panel, and a 12 V linear actuator. It also describes timer-based or photoresistor-based control. These are examples from one project, not universal specifications. The frame, foundation, actuator force and stroke, fasteners, wiring, travel limits, and control behavior all have to suit the actual module and site.
Do not transfer that project’s dimensions or actuator capacity to another installation without evaluating panel area and mass, mounting geometry, wind exposure, and the local structural requirements. Its reported materials estimate and comparative measurements are project-specific and dated; the publisher explicitly cautions that its test was not intended to create scientific results applicable to other systems. They are not reliable current pricing or a general forecast of tracker performance.

- Find Perfect Angle for Solar Panels - The solar angle guide helps you determine the optimal angle for your solar panels to maximize energy output and efficiency. By using the solar angle guide, you can ensure that your solar panels are operating at maximum efficiency, saving you time and helping a lot for your outdoor time
- 【Simple to Use】Clip the solar panel angle tool to the edge of the solar panel, then adjust the angle of the solar panels. When the black dot shadow on the dial is close to the black cross in the middle, it is 90 degrees. The closer the angle of sunlight is to 90°, the higher solar energy intake you will get
- 【Premium Quality】Since it needs exposed to the sun for a long time, our solar tracker tool uses UV-resistant and high-transparency PC and ABS materials, waterproof, durable and high temperatures resistant, prolong the service life. The flexible clip is made of stainless steel material, rust resistant and reliable than plastic materials, not easy to break and has strong force. The curved corner makes it easy to clamp on portable solar panels of any thickness and prevent to scratch the solar panel
- 【Widely Application】You can use it on any brand of foldable portable solar panels or solar mounting bracket. And it easy to install and remove, you only need one solar alignment tool to adjust the angle for every solar panels you have. Save your time, effort and money
- 【Notice】Make sure you install on the appropriate location, do NOT block any cell of the solar panels which will reduce the power efficiency. Do not over open the clamp ((maximum 1cm), the plastic buckles are prone to falling off or breaking
Account for shading and spacing
Tracking rows can shade one another, especially when the sun is low. NREL’s System Advisor Model documentation explains one-axis tracking and backtracking: backtracking reduces the tracker angle toward horizontal during lower-sun periods to limit adjacent-row shading. NREL’s PVWatts guidance also notes that ground coverage ratio informs self-shading estimates for fixed open-rack and one-axis arrays.
These modeling concepts matter most when considering multiple rows or a ground-mounted array. A single model on a table does not reproduce row shading, wind loading, or real installation conditions.

Test whether movement helps at your site
Do not infer an energy gain from a panel’s position at one moment or from a demonstration that simply appears to face the sun. Compare energy produced over a meaningful interval, using the same panel and load where practical, and keep the test conditions as comparable as possible.
- Set up a fixed-panel baseline and a tracker using the same panel and load, if the equipment allows a fair comparison.
- Measure energy over a defined period rather than relying on an instantaneous voltage or current reading.
- Record test conditions that affect the result, including panel orientation, shading, weather, and measurement duration.
- Report the result as an observation from that setup and period. Do not present it as a general expected gain or payback estimate.
Science Buddies proposes comparing system performance, while the larger DIY project cautions that its own measurements are not scientifically generalizable. A useful comparison therefore describes the conditions and limits of the test, rather than claiming a universal percentage.

Plan for structural and electrical safety
A moving panel imposes changing loads on its frame and foundation. A published DIY design is not engineering certification for a different site. Before an outdoor build, account for the panel’s size and mass, wind exposure, mounting geometry, travel limits, and applicable local structural requirements. Use a drive and supports designed for the actual load rather than relying on a hobby servo or copied dimensions.
Electrical and weather protection matter even when the mechanism is simple. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program guidance for solar PV system design recommends managing cables to avoid hazards and performance problems, using weather-resistant enclosures with a NEMA rating appropriate to site conditions, and including applicable grounding, bonding, fault protection, and rapid-shutdown features. A low-voltage model still needs careful wiring. Connecting a system to a building or grid brings electrical-system and code requirements beyond a hobby prototype.
Quick Recap
- Keep wiring clear of the tracker’s moving range and protect it from abrasion and weather.
- Choose enclosures and electrical protection for the actual installation conditions.
- Have the structure, foundation, and electrical design checked against applicable local requirements before installing a full-size system.
