To add handles to a wooden box, either attach a suitable two-screw pull, make a wooden handle, or route a recessed handhold into the box wall. Choose by the box’s construction, the tools you have, the look and grip you want, and whether the box will be carried. For an attached pull, measure its actual screw-hole centers and follow its instructions for drill size and screw length; cabinet-hardware dimensions are not universal box-handle specifications.
Choose the right handle method

Before choosing, check the wall material and thickness, available grip clearance, appearance, repeatability, and intended use. If the box will be lifted by its handles, do not treat a handle’s appearance or cabinet-hardware guidance as proof that the assembled box is safe to carry.
How to attach a purchased pull
- Check the hardware and panel. Read the handle’s installation instructions for mounting style, drill size, screw length, and any panel-thickness requirements. Confirm the screws suit the actual box wall.
- Measure the screw-hole centers. Measure from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other; do not rely on the pull’s overall length. Mark the intended position on the box and check that the grip will be clear of edges, lids, and adjacent hardware.
- Make a template if you need repeatable placement. For one box, a simple cardboard template may be enough. Align it to a consistent edge or reference point, mark the hole locations, and recheck them before drilling. For multiple installations, a drilling guide or jig can help repeat the position.
- Drill to the handle maker’s specified size. Keep the holes aligned with the marks and appropriate for the mounting method. The drill sizes found in cabinet-pull guides are not a substitute for the instructions for your particular handle.
- Install and tighten carefully. Seat the pull with the specified screws and avoid overtightening, which can crack or damage a panel. Check that the handle sits securely and does not interfere with opening or closing the box.

Why cabinet-pull measurements are only a reference
IN.ID says 3-inch hole centers are common for cabinet pulls and recommends 3/16-inch holes for most styles, with an exception for stud-style hardware. These are cabinet-pull recommendations, not universal dimensions for box handles. Use the measurements and drill size specified for the hardware you are installing.

Make a wooden handle
A shop-made handle can match the box’s wood and finish or provide a custom grip shape. The design determines how to form and attach it, so choose a construction you can cut and hold securely with your available tools. Woodcraft’s four shop-made handle examples provide design approaches; they do not establish a load rating for a handle attached to a box.
Route a recessed handhold
A routed grip avoids a separate projecting pull and can be integrated into a wooden wall or drawer front. Festool’s routing example uses a router and template and recommends planning the routing before assembly when possible: “Whenever possible, the handle should be routed before the drawer or box is glued.” That sequence can make the work easier to access. Follow the router’s operating manual and safety instructions; the example is not a substitute for them.

Carrying strength: what you can and cannot assume
A handle’s suitability for lifting depends on the specific handle, fasteners, wall material and thickness, and how the box is built. The installation guidance cited here does not provide a safe carrying capacity for a DIY box-and-handle assembly. Do not assign one based on a cabinet pull’s dimensions or on the installation method alone. Check the handle maker’s stated rating, if any, and consider whether the box construction and attachment meet the demands of its intended use.
