For a portable projector setup, build a PVC support; for a more permanent installation, use a braced wood frame. The steps below cover both approaches and explain how to attach a screen surface if you are making the screen as well. A stand alone supports an existing screen; a frame-and-screen assembly also includes the projection surface.
Choose a stand style
| Option | Best suited to | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| PVC frame | Portable or outdoor setups that may need to come apart for storage. | Pipe, fittings, joints, and any fabric attachment must suit the dimensions you choose. DIY examples use 3/4-inch PVC plumbing parts, but that is an example, not a universal requirement. Instructables’ outdoor screen project describes PVC, grommets, and ball bungees; WikiHow’s frame guide uses 3/4-inch PVC parts and cement. |
| Wood frame | A fixed or more permanent screen location. | Requires cut lumber and suitable fasteners. A cited design includes a center support; its dimensions are specific to that example. Carl’s Place’s screen-frame instructions describe a wood frame and center member. |
| Commercial tripod screen | People who prefer a ready-made screen and support over building one. | This is a purchase alternative, not a DIY plan. The Pyle PRJTP84 manual says to open the tripod feet before raising the screen bar. Pyle PRJTP84 manual. |
There is no reliable apples-to-apples cost or load comparison in these examples. Choose by portability, available tools, storage, and whether you already own a screen.
Plan dimensions and materials
For a PVC frame
Measure the screen you will support, then draw the frame and its feet or base on paper. One PVC guide recommends making its frame about six inches larger than the screen in both dimensions to leave room to tension the surface. Treat that as an example, not a rule: recalculate for your screen, fittings, and attachment method before cutting.
- Compatible PVC pipe and fittings for the layout you draw.
- PVC cement if the design calls for permanent joints; cemented connections are less convenient to disassemble.
- If making an outdoor fabric screen, grommets and ball bungees are one documented attachment approach.
- Optional projection surface, such as screen fabric or blackout cloth, if you are building the screen assembly rather than only its support.
For a wood frame
Plan the frame around the screen’s viewable area and allow for the way its edges will attach. Select lumber and fasteners suited to that plan. Include a center member where your design needs it; the cited example’s center support is not a transferable dimension or a rated structural specification.

Build a portable PVC stand
- Measure and mark. Record the screen width and height, then mark the planned outer frame dimensions and base layout. Check that the screen and attachment points will not collide with joints.
- Cut the pipe to your plan. Use dimensions that account for the fittings’ insertion depth, rather than cutting each section to the frame’s outside measurement.
- Dry-fit the assembly. Connect the pieces without cement first. Set the frame on a level surface and check its shape, base contact, and wobble. Adjust before making any permanent joints.
- Assemble and brace. Cement only the connections your design intends to keep permanent, following the cement product’s directions. Add the planned feet or braces and allow joints to set as directed.
- Attach the screen. For a fabric surface, use the attachment method planned for the material; grommets with ball bungees are used in one outdoor example. Tension evenly rather than pulling one edge tight before the others.
- Recheck stability. Place the completed assembly on level ground and check for rocking, loose joints, and uneven tension before use.
Build a more permanent wood frame
- Lay out the viewable area and margins. Mark the screen opening and how the chosen surface will fasten around its edges.
- Cut and assemble the perimeter. Cut the lumber to the plan, then fasten the members square. Confirm the frame is flat before attaching the surface.
- Add the center support. Include a center member if the design calls for one, as in the cited wood-frame example. Recalculate member placement for your own frame instead of copying another screen’s measurements.
- Test the support before mounting the screen. Set the frame or stand in its intended position and check for wobble and secure connections before fabric tension adds force to the frame.
- Attach the surface evenly. Fasten the screen material or blackout cloth using an attachment method compatible with its edges and the frame. Work across opposing sides to avoid drawing the surface out of square.
Check the setup before viewing
- Use a level, firm surface and confirm every foot or base point is in contact.
- Look for rocking, loose joints, visibly bending members, or a screen that pulls the frame out of square.
- Keep the screen tension even and stop if the frame shifts or a connection loosens.
- Do not assume a homemade stand has a particular wind limit, maximum screen size, or load rating. The cited DIY examples do not establish those values. Outdoor conditions can change stability, so do not use the screen where it may become unsafe.
Stand only or complete screen assembly?
If you already own a retractable or framed screen, build only the support and attach it according to the screen maker’s instructions. If you need a complete DIY screen, add a compatible fabric surface and its attachment hardware to the stand plan. These are different projects: the fabric, tensioning approach, and frame dimensions have to work together.
