DIY Irrigation Systems: 6 Ways to Water Your Garden

Choose a garden irrigation method by plant spacing, bed layout, water source, and how much control or maintenance you want. Rainwater collection supplies water; a delivery method gets it to plants.

The right DIY irrigation setup depends on how your garden is planted. Use a hose for a few plants, a sprinkler for broad coverage, a soaker hose for beds and rows, or drip lines and emitters to target roots. A rain barrel can supply water to a compatible delivery method; it is a water source, not an irrigation system by itself.

Compare the six ways to irrigate a garden

Method Best fit What to consider
Hand watering A small garden, containers, or a few individual plants Offers direct control, but takes more time as the number of plants grows.
Overhead sprinkler Areas where broad coverage is useful Check the spray pattern in the actual garden; coverage should not be assumed to be even.
Soaker hose Rows, garden beds, and raised beds Seeps along the hose, including soil between plants; placement and mulch can help manage where water goes.
Drip tape or inline emitter tubing Rows or regularly spaced plants Place emitters near roots and use the filtration and pressure control required by the product.
Individual emitters, micro-sprays, or bubblers Widely spaced plants, containers, mixed beds, or larger plants Point emitters target individual plants; micro-sprays cover a wider area; bubblers can suit larger plants such as trees.
Rainwater collection A supplemental water source for a compatible setup A rain barrel stores water; pair it with a suitable way to deliver water to plants and check local restrictions.

These approaches are not all the same kind of choice: the first five describe ways to deliver water, while rainwater collection describes where water comes from. Municipal, well, or surface water may also supply an irrigation setup.

Choose by bed layout and plant spacing

Small gardens and containers

A hose and watering wand work for a few plants when you want to decide plant by plant how much to apply. A nozzle helps direct the flow. For containers or plants spaced apart, individual drip emitters or microtubes can direct water to selected root zones without laying a line along every row. (University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension, Small-Scale Irrigation Options; UF/IFAS, Microirrigation or Drip Irrigation for Home Landscapes)

Rows and raised beds

For straight rows, a soaker hose or drip tape can follow the planting line. A soaker hose seeps along its length, so it can also wet open soil between plants and potentially encourage weeds. Lay it close to plant stems, pin it in place, and consider mulch to reduce evaporation and protect the hose. Drip tape or inline emitter tubing is another option when plants are regularly spaced; position emitters near roots. Raised beds with straight rows are generally straightforward to lay out. Precise and efficient watering is no longer a tedious process, but an easily achievable reality.

Broad or mixed planting areas

An overhead hose-end sprinkler is a practical broad-coverage choice, but observe the pattern across the garden rather than assuming every area receives the same amount. For mixed beds or groundcovers, micro-sprays spread water over more area than point emitters. Bubblers are an option for larger plants such as trees. Avoid treating unlike heads as interchangeable in a single zone: match the emitter to the planting layout. (UNH Extension, Irrigation Systems for the Garden; UF/IFAS, Microirrigation or Drip Irrigation for Home Landscapes)

Should you use drip irrigation or a soaker hose?

Choose a soaker hose when you want water to seep along a line serving a bed or row and can accept some wetting between plants. Choose drip tape or inline emitter tubing for rows or regular spacing when you want water placed at specific points near roots. For plants that are widely spaced, individual emitters or microtubes can target each plant instead of wetting an entire line. None is automatically best for every bed: the deciding factors are spacing, the amount of open soil between plants, and the system’s pressure and layout requirements. Plan a DIY system before buying parts

  1. Sketch the garden. Measure the area, mark plants that need irrigation, and note the water source. Draw the route for lines near rows or plant bases to avoid unnecessary tubing and fittings. (UF/IFAS, DIY Simple Microirrigation)
  2. Match delivery to the planting. Mark where a hose, soaker line, drip line, or individual emitters should run. For broad or mixed coverage, check whether a sprinkler or micro-spray pattern fits the area.
  3. Check the source and product requirements. A faucet-connected drip setup may use a water connection, filter, pressure control, feeder or lateral tubing, and emitters. A timer is optional. Not every system or water source needs identical components, so follow the manufacturer’s flow and pressure instructions.
  4. Lay out and test the lines. Place emitters near roots, secure hoses where needed, and inspect the operating system for leaks or areas that are not being watered as intended.
  5. Adjust using soil and weather. Check soil moisture and how deeply the soil is wetted; a rain gauge can help account for rainfall. Adjust run time and frequency for soil, root depth, weather, plant type, and plant age rather than following one fixed schedule.

Pressure, filtration, and upkeep

Drip systems use low-pressure delivery compared with typical household faucet pressure, but requirements vary by system. Iowa State Extension reports typical household faucet pressure of 25–35 psi and says most drip or trickle systems operate around 10 psi; UF/IFAS describes microirrigation generally as 15 psi or less and 60 gallons per hour or less. These are source-specific guidance figures, not specifications for every kit. Use product instructions and suitable pressure control, and verify that a water source such as a rain barrel is compatible with the chosen setup. (Iowa State Extension, Using Drip Irrigation in the Garden; UF/IFAS, Microirrigation or Drip Irrigation for Home Landscapes)

  • Inspect tubing and connections for leaks, clogs, and damage during the season.
  • Clean the filter and flush lines when needed; small emitters can clog.
  • Check timer batteries if the setup is automated.
  • Before winter in a freezing climate, drain drip systems and soaker hoses; store removable controls indoors as appropriate.

A garden drip irrigation kit with emitters can simplify assembly, but check what the kit actually includes: filtration, pressure regulation, connectors, and a timer may be separate. A soaker hose is a simpler alternative for a bed or row; a battery-operated hose timer and rain gauge are optional tools, not requirements.
