Hackaday reported that the featured builder demonstrated forming 4 mm flat steel; that is a report of one demonstration, not a verified capacity rating. The article does not establish a complete bill of materials or total build cost, so treat this as a fabrication concept—not a guaranteed cheap, ready-to-build design.
What the fence-post slip roll is designed to do
A slip roll uses three rollers to form sheet or thin flat stock into arcs and cylinders. The work passes between the feed rollers while a third roller presses against it to create the bend. In the featured low-cost concept, steel fence posts and compatible connectors form the roller assembly. Hackaday highlights the chain-and-sprocket linkage that makes the two lower rollers turn together as the key mechanical challenge. Hackaday’s 2019 article describes the build and its demonstration.
How the rollers shape metal
The feed rollers grip and move the stock; the adjustable rear forming roller controls how sharply it bends. On the commercial machine described in Grizzly’s Model G0629 manual, moving that roller closer to the feed rollers produces a tighter curve. In practice, the target radius takes adjustment: material thickness and other material differences affect the result, so make incremental changes and check the work rather than assuming one setting will produce an exact radius.
Grizzly describes its own machine as forming mild sheet metal up to 20 gauge into arcs and cylinders. That is operating context for the Model G0629, not a specification for the fence-post build. Likewise, Hackaday’s account that the builder demonstrated forming 4 mm flat steel is not an independently verified rating, nor a promise that another build with similar-looking parts will handle that stock.

The design detail that needs the most care
The lower rollers need to rotate in sync so they feed the material together. Hackaday reports that the builder cut sprockets from plate steel and notes that purchased sprockets could be modified with a larger bore. The article does not provide a complete dimensioned drawing or fit specifications, so sprocket bore, chain, shaft and connector choices must be matched to the actual design and checked for alignment and clearance. Do not infer dimensions from photographs alone.
The article also says the sprockets appear to be welded to galvanized pipe and warns about metal-fume-fever risk from welding galvanized steel. Welding zinc-coated material can expose workers to hazardous fumes; removing the coating where welding will occur is not a casual or stand-alone safety measure. Follow appropriate welding safety guidance, use suitable controls, and get qualified advice for the material and process before proceeding.

What the published evidence does—and does not—establish
The reported 4 mm demonstration is the only stated performance detail for the fence-post concept in the Hackaday account. It supplies no formal machine rating, independently measured performance result, complete bill of materials or verified total project cost. You therefore cannot use it to choose a safe working capacity or to calculate whether this design will cost less than buying a machine.
Other published figures belong to other machines or designs. They can help frame what a specified roller may do, but they are not substitutes for missing specifications on a homemade build.

Safety: account for pinch points and welding hazards
Rollers can pull fingers, hair or loose clothing into the nip. Grizzly’s Model G0629 manual states, “The rollers of this machine present a pinching hazard.” Keep hands, hair and clothing clear of the rollers while feeding stock, and use appropriate work practices for the machine you operate. The Grizzly manual specifies safety glasses, leather gloves and steel-toe footwear for its machine; consult the manual and safety requirements for your own equipment rather than assuming those instructions cover every homemade setup.
Welding galvanized components introduces a separate fume hazard. Hackaday specifically flags metal-fume-fever risk and says the zinc coating should be removed before welding. That warning is not a complete welding procedure: seek applicable welding safety guidance and qualified judgment about coating removal, ventilation and controls before doing the work.

- LISTED 12.6 IN, 20 GAUGE MILD-STEEL CAPACITY - The SJ-320 has a 12.6 in (320 mm) forming width and is listed for mild-steel sheet up to 20 gauge / 1.0 mm. Capacity varies with material grade, sheet width, workpiece length, and target radius; reduce thickness for harder materials or smaller-radius work.
- MANUAL SLIP ROLL FOR CURVES AND CYLINDERS - Turn the hand crank to feed compatible sheet through the three rolls, then adjust the roll spacing gradually between passes. The controlled multi-pass process is suited to forming curved panels, sleeves, small cylinders, and other light sheet-metal shapes.
- REMOVABLE UPPER ROLL - Pull out the upper roll after forming to release closed cylinders and other rolled workpieces without trying to slide them back through the machine. This top-roll release is useful when rolling parts that cannot be removed sideways.
- THREE WIRE-FORMING GROOVES - Integrated grooves support wire or round-stock forming in listed 6 mm, 8 mm, and 10 mm sizes. Use the grooves for compatible round material; do not treat these groove sizes as sheet-metal thickness ratings.
- COMPACT BENCH-MOUNT WORKFLOW - Secure the roller through the pre-drilled base holes before use. The machine has a listed 1 in roll diameter, a 19 x 8-3/4 x 7-1/2 in packing size, and a 29 lb net weight, fitting compact fabrication benches, maintenance areas, model-making spaces, and home shops.
Alternatives if you need a more defined design
Use a documented plan, with its limits in view
Gizmoplans lists a separate roller plan with drawings, a bill of materials and suppliers, along with the design-specific capacity figures shown above. Its specifications do not transfer to the fence-post concept. The plan’s current price and availability may change.
Consider a cut-file project
A separate Langmuir Systems FireShare community project offers a cut-ready DXF package for a benchtop roller. Its contributor recommends quarter-inch mild-steel plate and describes adjustable slots. The listing says a ratchet is currently used; drilling or a low-speed motor is proposed, not documented as tested. Langmuir Systems FireShare

Buy a hand roller for a stated work envelope
If the stock you need to form falls within its stated limit, the Northern Tool manual documents a hand-operated slip roller with a 24-inch width and maximum 0.8 mm mild-steel thickness. Check the machine’s current specifications and suitability for your material before purchase; those figures describe that model, not a general limit for slip rolls.
Quick Recap
Decide whether this build fits your project
- Stock: Identify the material, thickness and width you need to roll. The fence-post concept has no verified working envelope.
- Fabrication: Plan for fitting and aligning the roller assembly and designing the synchronized chain-and-sprocket drive. The available account is not a complete build drawing.
- Finished shape: Check the required radius and whether the finished cylinder must be removable as a closed form; do not assume a particular frame lets you extract it.
- Cost: Add up compatible posts, connectors, chain, sprockets, fabrication supplies and tools for your actual design. No verified total cost or like-for-like savings comparison is available for the featured build.
- Safety: Plan for roller nip hazards and, if welding galvanized components, appropriate fume controls and qualified guidance.
