A five-gallon bucket can be used to build a small personal cooler, but a wet-pad version is an evaporative cooler, not a conventional air conditioner. It cools air by evaporating water into it, which also raises indoor humidity. It is most useful in dry conditions with a way for the moist air to escape. A bucket fitted with ice and a fan is a different design: it uses stored ice as a temporary heat sink rather than evaporating water through a wet pad.
How a bucket evaporative cooler works
A direct evaporative cooler moves air across or through a wetted porous surface. As water evaporates, it takes heat from the air, lowering its dry-bulb temperature while increasing its water-vapor content. The University of Florida IFAS Extension explains that incoming air’s wet-bulb temperature is the practical lower limit for cooling by evaporation alone: the outlet air cannot be cooled below that limit by this process.
The potential cooling is therefore tied to the difference between the incoming air’s dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures. A larger difference generally means more room for evaporative cooling. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory also identifies airflow through the media and the condition of that media as factors in cooling effectiveness. A fan must move air across a sufficiently wetted surface; simply placing water in a bucket does not create a wet-pad cooler.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency puts the central trade-off plainly: “Evaporative coolers are used in dry climates. They use water to provide cooling and increase relative humidity indoors.”

What to choose: wet media or ice
| Design | How it cools | Humidity and ventilation | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wet-pad evaporative cooler | Water evaporates from wetted porous media into moving air. | Adds moisture to the air; provide a path for moist air to leave. | Effect depends on incoming humidity, airflow, and the wetted media. No specific output or room-size result is established for a five-gallon DIY build. |
| Ice-and-fan bucket cooler | A fan directs air past ice or a frozen water container, which absorbs heat as it warms and melts. | Does not rely on evaporation from a wet pad; still manage any meltwater safely. | Cooling is temporary and depends on the amount and condition of the ice, airflow, and setup. |
These methods should not be treated as interchangeable or as equivalent to household refrigeration. If your goal is evaporative cooling, the build needs wetted media in the airflow. If you follow an ice-bucket design, call it an ice-and-fan spot cooler rather than a wet-pad evaporative cooler.
What you need for a five-gallon bucket build

- A lidded five-gallon bucket and a liner
- A small fan
- Short PVC pipe sections
- A drill and hole saws
- A box cutter
- Loose ice or a frozen gallon jug
That guide places outlet holes near the bucket’s base and directs the builder to add ice or a frozen jug before running the fan. Those are details of that particular design, not independently verified optimum dimensions or placement. Use tools and cutting methods appropriate to the bucket material, secure the fan, and keep electrical components away from water and meltwater.
For a wet-pad evaporative version
A wet-pad version needs a fan, a water supply or reservoir, and porous wicking media arranged so air passes through or over the wetted surface. The cited technical sources explain the fan-and-pad principle, but they do not establish a tested five-gallon recipe, hole layout, pad size, or fan specification. Do not assume the ice-bucket dimensions will produce an effective wet-pad system; the airflow path and media must be designed for the evaporative method.

How to use an evaporative cooler without making the space too humid
- Consider the incoming air. Evaporative cooling has more potential when the entering air is dry and its dry-bulb temperature is well above its wet-bulb temperature. In humid weather, the remaining capacity for evaporation is limited.
- Give moist air an exit. Operate the cooler where air can move through the occupied space and out through suitable ventilation. A closed, already humid room is not an ideal condition for a direct evaporative cooler.
- Keep airflow across wetted media. Arrange the fan and media so moving air actually contacts the wet surface. Poor airflow or media that is not uniformly wetted undermines the process.
- Use it for local comfort first. Aim the outlet toward a person or a small area rather than assuming a bucket-sized unit can lower the temperature of an entire room.
- Manage water and electricity. Prevent leaks and standing water around the fan, plug, or other electrical parts. Empty or maintain the reservoir as appropriate for the design and its materials.
Can a homemade bucket cooler cool a room?
Do not count on a five-gallon bucket cooler as a room air conditioner. Consumer Reports tested an ice-and-fan homemade bucket cooler using 8–12 pounds of ice in three forms—cubes, reusable ice packs, and a frozen gallon jug. In its test, room temperature fell by 2–3°F and began rising again within 30 minutes. That result applies to Consumer Reports’ tested ice-based setup, not to a wet-pad evaporative design or every bucket build.
A wet-pad cooler has a different mechanism, and no published measurement cited here establishes a particular temperature drop, runtime, or room size for an exact five-gallon wet-pad build. Its performance will depend on conditions such as humidity and airflow, so a precise outlet temperature cannot be promised without measurements of the incoming air and a test of the specific unit.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every bucket cooler an evaporative cooler. Ice in a bucket and water evaporating from a pad are distinct cooling methods.
- Expecting dry-climate performance in humid weather. Moist incoming air has less capacity to take up additional water vapor.
- Running a wet-pad cooler in a sealed space. Direct evaporation increases indoor humidity, so provide appropriate ventilation.
- Assuming cold outlet air proves whole-room cooling. A cool stream directed at one person is not evidence that the unit can lower a room’s overall temperature.
- Transferring a result from one design to another. Consumer Reports’ ice-and-fan test does not measure a wet-pad build.
