To make a backyard rink, choose a level site near a water source, build a border that can hold the water, and use a suitable liner if needed. Wait for frozen ground and several days of sustained cold, then build the ice with thin applications that freeze completely before the next one. Keep snow and debris off the surface, and use backyard-rink guidance—not lake-ice rules—to judge readiness.
Choose a suitable site
Start with a flat, level area clear of debris and obstructions. A slope makes it harder to contain water: small dips and rises can be leveled with snow, but a more pronounced slope requires taller borders at the low end. Locate the rink near a winter water source, and consider a shaded area to slow premature melting. These are recommendations in the City of Toronto’s October 2024 backyard-rink guide.
Choose a border and decide whether to use a liner
A perimeter must hold water while the ice forms. The right design depends on the site, water retention needs, and intended use; the available guidance does not establish one best design or a universal cost comparison.
- Snow berm: A mound of packed snow around the perimeter is a low-cost option, if you have enough snow and it can hold the water.
- Framed border: Toronto lists 2-by-4 lumber and large-diameter PVC as options. Home Depot Canada’s DIY guide describes a lumber frame supported by stakes and corner brackets.
- Liner: A plastic liner helps retain and level water. A heavy-duty tarp is another option described in Home Depot’s rink construction instructions. Follow the chosen liner’s dimensions and instructions; the sheet’s 20-by-40-foot liner is an example kit component, not a universal rink size.
Prepare the base and install the liner
Clear the area of stones, branches, and other debris that could puncture the liner. Set the liner against the inside walls of the frame, leaving enough slack that it is not pulled taut. Tension can increase the risk of a tear or puncture as the water fills the rink. Use the dimensions and installation directions for your specific liner rather than assuming that the example size in a retailer’s instruction sheet fits your yard.

Wait for suitable weather
Toronto’s municipal guide says the ground should be frozen and the air should be at or below -4°C (25°F) for five consecutive days to make a good-quality natural rink. It recommends adding water at night, late evening, or early morning, rather than during the warmest part of the day. Treat those figures as municipal guidance, not a guarantee of freeze time in every climate or yard.
Build the ice in thin layers
- Make the first coat very thin. Use a brass or plastic hose nozzle to apply a fan-like spray, overlapping the passes. Begin in the lowest part of the rink, as Toronto recommends.
- Let the coat freeze completely. Do not add another layer while water remains unfrozen.
- Repeat with thin applications. Build the ice gradually, allowing each layer to freeze before applying the next. Toronto says that if water takes more than 15–20 minutes to freeze under the guide’s stated conditions, the application was too heavy; use less water on the next pass.
Maintain the surface and judge readiness
Clear snow and debris before adding water, then resurface with thin layers and let each freeze completely. Toronto advises against reflooding at -23°C (-9°F) or colder because warmer water may crack the ice beneath.

- PLEASE NOTE - Liner sizes are the size of the liner that you are receiving, not the size of the rink that they will work with. When selecting a liner, select a size that is at least 5' longer and 5' wider than your ice rink to account for rink board height.
- Creates Quality Ice - Our white ice rink liner reflects light easily, keeping your ice thick and solid throughout the season. The white plastic is perfect for making a professional looking backyard ice rink that will last the entire season.
- 6 Mil Thickness - Iron Sleek’s ice rink liner is engineered to a thickness of 6 Mil - creating a tear and puncture resistant liner that is perfect for any outdoor ice rink. It is an incredible liner that works with your existing ice rink kit. We offer a variety of different sizes for just about any skating rink kit.
- UV Resistant - Constructed with UV additives, our ice rink liner will not degrade over the season due to UV rays. This is an absolute necessity for an outdoor ice skating rink as UV rays can severely affect the quality of plastic over time. Skate all winter long with no worries!
- Tough & Durable - Iron Sleek’s ice rink liner is manufactured with strong virgin polyethylene resins, which means no recycled materials. This is to increase the use-life of the plastic and to ensure the overall integrity of the plastic. All of Iron Sleek’s liners are manufactured with high quality low density polyethylene plastic (LDPE).
The Toronto guide says its rink may be ready in about a week or after the ice reaches 7.5 cm (3 inches). That is guidance for its constructed natural-rink context, not a universal engineering threshold or a guarantee that a particular rink is safe. Conditions and the rink itself vary.
Keep backyard-rink safety separate from natural-ice safety
A rink built on the ground is not the same as skating on a lake, river, or pond. Health Canada’s natural-ice safety guidance, published December 8, 2025, says ice should look to be at least 15 cm (6 inches) thick for skating alone and 20 cm (8 inches) for groups. Those figures concern natural bodies of water; they are not specifications for a backyard rink.

For natural ice, Health Canada warns that snow cover, currents, temperature changes, and submerged objects can affect thickness. Ice can change quickly, so check it every time, avoid open water, and stay off stormwater management ponds. Do not use backyard-rink guidance to decide whether natural ice is safe.
For building, maintaining, and using a backyard rink, Toronto recommends having at least two people on site and using CSA helmets and ice creepers while flooding or shoveling. Health Canada advises using helmets certified for the intended activity and supervising young children.

Check local rules before building
Requirements for permits, zoning, drainage, and property use depend on where you live. Home Depot’s construction instructions note that local zoning and building codes apply. Check with your local authorities and consider where water will drain when the rink melts; the cited guidance does not establish rules for every jurisdiction.
