Stop watering based on your grass and soil—not a fixed date or the first frost. As fall cools, reduce irrigation, count rainfall, and check whether the lawn is still growing or showing drought stress. Dormant warm-season grass in a cold-winter region generally no longer needs routine irrigation; cool-season grass may still need water before the ground freezes.
How to decide whether your lawn still needs water
Identify your grass and climate
Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and centipedegrass are warm-season grasses that generally go dormant in cold-winter regions. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension advises turning irrigation off once warm-season turf is dormant and no longer actively growing (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension). Cool-season grasses can remain active and use water in fall. The timing varies with local weather and winter onset, so a date that fits one region—or grass type—may not fit yours.
Reduce watering as conditions change
As temperatures cool, water demand usually declines. Count rainfall and skip irrigation when the soil is already moist or rain has supplied enough water. Do not leave a summer timer running simply because its schedule is permitted. Follow local watering restrictions, but remember that an allowed watering day does not mean your lawn needs water.
Look for signs of drought stress
UF/IFAS Extension identifies folded blades, a blue-gray cast, and footprints or tire tracks that remain visible as signs that turf may need water (UF/IFAS, Watering Your Florida Lawn). Treat these as clues to check soil moisture and recent rain, not as a reason to resume a fixed summer schedule.

What changes for warm-season and cool-season grass
Warm-season grass in a cold-winter region
Once warm-season turf has gone dormant and stopped actively growing, turn off routine irrigation rather than continuing its summer schedule. Fall advice from Texas A&M also calls for reducing irrigation as plant demand declines (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension).
Cool-season grass in fall
Cool-season turf may still be growing and using water late in the season. University of Idaho Extension says grasses may use close to one inch of water per week in October, depending on the year and when winter arrives; that is a regional estimate, not a fixed target for every lawn (University of Idaho Extension). The goal is to enter winter with soil moist but not waterlogged. Minnesota Extension likewise advises watering a dry lawn before soil temperatures freeze (University of Minnesota Extension).

If the lawn is dry, water before the soil freezes
A dry lawn may benefit from water before the ground freezes, but avoid saturating the soil or causing runoff. UF/IFAS recommends wetting the turf root zone; its example of one-half to three-quarters of an inch applies to Florida sandy soils with roots in the top 12 inches, not as a nationwide amount (UF/IFAS, Watering Your Florida Lawn).
Use a rain gauge to track rainfall or catch cups to see how much your sprinklers apply. Straight-sided household containers can work for a simple catch test; a purpose-made gauge is optional. Water only when conditions call for it, and do not run irrigation in freezing temperatures.

Why there is no universal winter watering calendar
Regional recommendations illustrate how much climate and conditions matter. They are local examples, not a timetable to combine or apply everywhere.
| Location and turf context | Local guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Colorado, extended dry winter periods | Watering may be needed every four to six weeks from late fall to spring. | Colorado State University Extension says this applies when the ground is thawed and can accept water. Pay particular attention to exposed slopes, shallow soil, and south- or west-facing areas (Colorado State University Extension). |
| Florida, St. Augustinegrass | Winter intervals in the UF/IFAS table are 8–28 days in Pensacola, 7–23 days in Gainesville, and 3–10 days in Miami. | The table assumes six-inch roots and no rainfall; it is not a recommendation for cold-winter lawns (UF/IFAS, Watering Your Florida Lawn). |
| North Florida winter guidance | A lawn may go two to three weeks between irrigation events, and rainfall may provide all needed water. | This is UF/IFAS Extension Okaloosa County guidance dated September 25, 2026, for a North Florida context—not a general winter interval (UF/IFAS Extension Okaloosa County). |
For winter watering in dry climates, the ground must be thawed and able to absorb water. Do not treat a recommendation for a prolonged dry period as a routine schedule when rain or moist soil has already supplied enough water.

Prepare irrigation equipment for freezing weather
Protecting the lawn and protecting the irrigation system are separate tasks. In a freezing climate, shut off and winterize the system as appropriate for its design before the ground freezes. Nebraska Extension advises turning off the main irrigation control so a programmed schedule cannot start unexpectedly, draining garden hoses around the first frost, and protecting outdoor faucets (Nebraska Extension).
Many in-ground systems need a blowout before ground freeze. Nebraska Extension describes this as using high-pressure air to remove water from irrigation piping and cautions that it is a professional job; some water may remain underground depending on the soil and system age. Minnesota Extension’s recommendation to winterize during the third or fourth week of October is specific to much of Minnesota, not a universal date (University of Minnesota Extension).
