Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUnplug the router, confirm the bit shank matches the collet, clean both parts, and reinstall the bit according to your router’s manual. Tighten the collet by the manufacturer’s prescribed method. If the bit still slips, stop using the router and inspect the collet and nut for wear or damage.
Work through these checks in order
- Disconnect power. Unplug the router before inspecting or adjusting the collet so it cannot start unexpectedly.
- Match the bit to the collet. Check the router’s manual or markings for the collet size, then verify the bit shank is that exact size. A mismatched collet, bit, or adapter cannot be relied on to grip securely.
- Clean the clamping surfaces. Remove dust, chips, residue, grease, and rust from the bit shank, collet, nut, and spindle taper as the manual directs. Bosch and Craftsman both instruct users to keep these parts clean (Bosch operating instructions; Craftsman 28084 manual).
- Seat the bit correctly. The collet must grip the smooth shank, not the fluted cutting portion. Follow the insertion depth in your router’s manual. For example, the cited Bosch manual specifies at least 20 mm of insertion, while the cited Porter-Cable manual specifies at least 19 mm and says to back the bit out approximately 1.6 mm if it bottoms out. These are model-specific instructions, not universal measurements (Bosch; Porter-Cable instruction manual).
- Tighten as directed. Use the wrench or tightening method specified for your router, and tighten securely without guessing at a torque value or applying force beyond the maker’s procedure. Never tighten an empty collet: Bosch and Porter-Cable warn that doing so can damage the assembly. Porter-Cable specifically instructs users to tighten the nut securely to prevent slipping (Porter-Cable instruction manual).
- Stop if it still slips. Do not continue routing with a bit that will not stay securely held. Inspect the collet and nut for damage or wear; replace faulty parts with components specified for the exact router model. Bosch and Craftsman manuals call for replacing worn or damaged collets.
Choosing a replacement collet
Check the router model and the maker’s parts guidance before ordering. Confirm the required shank size and whether the replacement is a collet alone or a collet-and-nut assembly. The cited manuals do not establish a universal interchangeable collet, so do not assume a generic part will fit or hold safely.
Why a router bit may slip
The manufacturer instructions point to fit, cleanliness, proper insertion, secure tightening, and component condition as the checks to make. They do not establish one universal cause or tightening torque. If those checks do not restore a reliable grip, have the router serviced or replace the specified worn or damaged parts rather than trying to compensate with extra force.
