For an open garden, Iowa State University Extension recommends a fence at least eight feet tall, with no gaps at the ground. Temporary mesh can protect a smaller planting; repellents and scare devices are less reliable and should be treated as backup measures.
Choose protection that fits your patch
Start with the patch’s size and layout. A broad, open garden is harder to protect with a short or improvised barrier than a small bed or a planting enclosed by existing structures. Consider how much fence you can install and maintain, whether the protection needs to be temporary, and the level of deer pressure in your area.

- Open garden: Use a tall, continuous fence as the main defense.
- Small or vulnerable planting: Consider secured polypropylene mesh as a temporary barrier.
- Repellents or scare devices: Use only as supplementary measures, not as a substitute for exclusion.
The University of Massachusetts Extension identifies fencing as the most effective long-term approach for pumpkin crops. Deer pressure can also depend on what other food is available nearby.
Build a fence deer cannot easily get past
For a broad, open area, Iowa State University Extension recommends passive fencing at least eight feet tall. The fence should meet the ground and have no openings deer can pass through or duck under. Woven wire is one commonly used, reliable material, although building a fence can take substantial labor and expense.
#1 Best Overall
- REPELS DEER AND RABBITS: Deer and rabbits don’t have to eat vegetation for the repellent to be effective—they have a natural aversion to the scent
- SPRAY ON PLANTS: Use to treat landscaped ornamental gardens, flowers, shrubs, trees and vines
- RAIN RESISTANT: Ready-to-use liquid formula starts to work immediately
- HARMLESS TO PLANTS AND ANIMALS: Won’t harm plants and animals when used and stored as directed
- APPLY YEAR-ROUND: For best results, shake well before each use
A six-foot fence is not a dependable general-purpose alternative. Iowa State says a shorter fence may work in a small enclosed area or where a solid privacy fence blocks deer from seeing a landing area. Whether that arrangement works depends on the site; do not assume the same height will protect every patch.
Plan the route and installation before planting where possible. University of Maryland Extension advises establishing exclusion before planting when feasible. Check local zoning and other applicable rules before building a fence, especially an electric one.

Use mesh for a limited planting
Polypropylene mesh can be draped over vulnerable plants or supported on posts around them. UF/IFAS also describes attaching it to vertical or slanted fences. Secure it so it functions as a physical barrier, and inspect it for loose sections or openings. It is a practical temporary option for a small planting, not a guaranteed system for a large patch.
Treat repellents as a cautious backup
Repellent performance varies. Rain, irrigation, dew, and new growth can reduce the effect of some products, while taste repellents may need repeated application. Deer can also become accustomed to odors or tastes.

- SAFE FOR PETS & POLLINATORS: Made from natural ingredients and botanical oils that are safe for pets, people, and the environment. Contains NO harmful chemicals or glues that threaten nearby wildlife
Before applying any product to pumpkin plants, read its current label and confirm that it permits use on edible crops. Do not assume that a garden repellent—or a homemade spray—is suitable for pumpkins. Iowa State Extension cautions against using taste repellents on edible crops in its guidance, and UC IPM notes that most repellents are not allowed on edible food crops. The specific product label and relevant local guidance determine what is permitted.
Use scare devices only to supplement a barrier
Motion-activated sprinklers, lights, dogs, and noise devices may disrupt deer movement temporarily. Their effect can fade as deer learn that a tactic is predictable or harmless. If you use one, vary or reposition it when practical, and keep a physical barrier as the primary protection.

Extension guidance supports fencing as the strongest general strategy, but it does not establish one fence design that will work equally well for every pumpkin patch. Plot geometry, gaps, maintenance, local deer pressure, and nearby food sources all affect results. The pumpkin-specific guidance supports fencing as a long-term approach; it does not provide a controlled comparison of fence dimensions for home gardens.
