The best bath mat depends first on where it goes. Those reviews concern mats used outside bathing surfaces. They should not be treated as comparable to tests of mats installed on a wet tub or shower floor. Stone mats: a different drying trade-off
Diatomaceous-earth stone mats are a distinct alternative to textile rugs. Consumer Reports says it tested five in 2026 and describes rapid drying as a reason people may consider them. The available review description does not establish which model dries fastest, how stone mats compare with the named fabric rugs on comfort or grip, or their relative durability. Bath and shower mats on wet surfaces: take grip claims seriously
A mat intended to sit inside a tub or shower has a different job from a rug on the bathroom floor. In 2015, the Consumer Council of Hong Kong tested 34 bath and shower mats; nine fell below the minimum slip-resistance requirements of the standard it referenced. For the test, barefoot users walked on mats on an inclinable ramp while warm soapy solution flowed over their feet and the mat. This result applies to that test, date, and market—not to current fabric rugs generally—and should not be generalized into a failure rate for all products sold today. Read the specific product’s intended-use and installation instructions, and do not rely on “non-slip” or “slip-resistant” wording alone.

A separate 2019 test by Japan’s National Consumer Affairs Center illustrates why an individual result needs its context. The center compared the reported plastic bathroom-floor mat and the same-model item with three similar reference products, measuring the force needed to pull a rubber-soled plate across surfaces coated evenly with soapy water. The tested model required the least pulling force, and the most respondents in its monitor test characterized it as dangerously slippery. That is a finding about the tested model and conditions, not evidence that bath mats in general are unsafe.
How to choose and care for a mat
If it sits outside the tub or shower
- Prioritize absorbency and resistance to slipping on your particular floor—the two basic properties ASTM highlights for this placement.
- Use Consumer Reports’ evaluation criteria as a practical checklist: feel, absorbency, ease of vacuuming, and drying speed. Its published summary does not provide comparable scores for the named models.
- Check the product’s washing, vacuuming, and drying directions. The available roundup description does not establish how the featured fabric rugs perform after repeated cleaning.
If it sits inside a tub or shower
