You can improve privacy in a courtyard home without darkening every room by treating the specific sightlines that cause a problem—not every window or boundary. Start by checking where people can see in, then use layout, a selectively placed screen, considered planting or an appropriate glazing treatment. Each option has trade-offs in daylight, views, maintenance and privacy after dark.
Start with the sightlines, not the coverings
Identify the exposed windows and doors, as well as the courtyard seats or paths where privacy matters. Check the view from inside and outside, including from nearby balconies, upper floors and access routes. Note the time of day: the angle of the sun and the direction of views can change with the hour and season.

This helps distinguish a direct view into one room from a broader boundary concern. Addressing the particular line of sight is often easier to balance with daylight and outlook than covering every opening. Greater London Authority housing guidance recommends careful window siting and the use of screens and planting to provide privacy.

Use layout and window geometry where possible
For a new build or substantial renovation, consider whether a change to window position, orientation or room layout can avoid a direct view. Options may include offset or angled windows, a set-back, or a small buffer between exposed spaces. Australian government home-design guidance also recommends offsetting windows to avoid direct views.

The right arrangement depends on the site, climate, how the rooms are used and local requirements. London guidance advises avoiding directly facing windows where privacy distances are tight and describes non-standard window arrangements as one way to respond. If you are altering existing windows, check planning and building requirements before settling on a design.
Place a screen across the view that matters
A slatted, perforated or trellis screen can interrupt a direct sightline without enclosing the whole courtyard. Use only the height and area needed to block the view from the relevant position, and consider how the screen affects daylight, sunlight, air movement and the outward view.

How much can be seen through a permeable screen depends on its spacing and angle, its height and the observer’s position. The Royal Horticultural Society advises balancing shelter and privacy with light and views out; its guidance is a design principle, not a guarantee that a particular screen will preserve a fixed amount of daylight.
Use planting as a living, changing screen
Plants can soften a boundary and provide screening, but they take time to grow and may offer less cover in some seasons. Choose for mature height and spread, foliage density and seasonal coverage, rather than relying on a young plant to provide immediate privacy.

Pleached trees can screen higher views while leaving a relatively clear area below their trained canopies. They suit some courtyards with limited ground space, but require maintenance and may take time to establish unless you buy trained specimens. Australian government guidance recommends matching planting to shading needs and considering solar access and the risk of roots near buildings.
Before planting or increasing hedge height, consider the effect on light to adjoining windows and garden areas. UK government guidance on hedge-related light loss takes distance and orientation into account; its 2 metre minimum action height is a parameter in that procedure, not a universally safe or recommended hedge height.

Choose film or glazing treatment for the conditions you need
Window film is a possible retrofit for exposed glazing, but different types work differently. Frosted or screen-printed treatments diffuse or obscure views; reflective films may provide daytime screening when the exterior is brighter than the interior, but should not be treated as a dependable one-way mirror in every lighting condition. The National Protective Security Authority lists reflective and screen-printed films among obscuration options, but its general guidance does not certify a particular consumer product.

Check the manufacturer’s information for the exact glazing, light transmission and privacy conditions, and consider the view from both sides. Test the appearance in the conditions that matter before relying on film alone. If you need privacy after dark, when interior lights can make a room visible from outside, a controllable blind or curtain may be needed.

For the specific UK permitted-development provision covering certain side windows, privacy glazing is rated from level 1 to level 5 and at least level 3 is required; the guidance says one-way glass does not count as obscure glazing under that rule. This is not a universal building standard, so check the provision and local requirements that apply to your property.
Check daylight and sunlight as the design changes
Assess the effects of screens and planting alongside window orientation, room depth and seasonal sun. Australian government orientation guidance recommends understanding sun angles at different times and seasons when designing windows and shading; its shading guidance also advises matching landscaping to shade needs without blocking cooling breezes.
London housing guidance gives minimum average daylight factor targets of 1% for a bedroom and 1.5% for a living room in the context of new dwellings. These are not universal retrofit guarantees or substitutes for assessing a particular courtyard and room. The available guidance does not establish a comparative percentage of daylight preserved by specific consumer films, screens or plants.

|---|---|---|
| Window or room layout | Can avoid a direct view while retaining an outward view. | Most applicable to new construction or substantial renovation; fit depends on site, room use and local rules. |
| Permeable exterior screen | Can interrupt a targeted sightline while retaining some visual connection. | Effects depend on spacing, angle, height and position; assess light, sunlight and airflow. |
| Planting | Can soften a boundary and screen views as it grows; coverage changes with season and maturity. | Requires space, time and maintenance; consider mature spread, shading, solar access and roots. |
| Frosted or screen-printed film | Obscures or diffuses views on treated glazing. | Check light transmission, glazing suitability and the resulting outward view; privacy after dark may require another treatment. |
| Reflective film | Can obscure views under suitable lighting conditions. | Do not assume it provides privacy in all conditions, especially after dark; verify the specific product and retain a controllable option if needed. |
