Choose a GNSS receiver by starting with the work and its required horizontal and vertical tolerances—not with a feature list. Then select a correction source, controller and software workflow, and field setup that can meet the job’s control and deliverable requirements. A receiver’s advertised accuracy is conditional, not a guarantee for every site.

Start with the work the receiver must do

Before comparing models, define what the crew will measure or set out, the required tolerance in both horizontal position and elevation, the project control, and the conditions where observations will be made. A system used for open-sky points may face different constraints from one used around buildings, trees, reflective metal, or other obstructions.

Write down the deliverable and required checks as well as the task. Construction GNSS systems may be configured for base-and-rover surveying, stakeout, grade checking, and related workflows, but the presence of a feature does not establish that every setup will meet a project tolerance. See the manufacturer descriptions from Trimble and Topcon.

Build a job specification before shopping

  • Required horizontal and vertical tolerances, and how the work will be independently checked.
  • What will be surveyed or laid out, and the coordinate reference and control the project requires.
  • Likely sky visibility, obstructions, reflective surfaces, and the working area’s size.
  • Whether the crew will use a local base or network corrections, and what communications are available.
  • Existing controller, field software, correction formats, and data handoff requirements.

Compare the systems against the job

Use the same project requirements for every candidate. Ask vendors to explain the conditions and operating ranges behind accuracy claims, and verify compatibility for the exact receiver model and software release. A useful comparison is about the whole workflow rather than a single headline specification.

Comparison area What to establish Why it matters
Accuracy and operating range Required horizontal and vertical tolerance; stated test conditions and applicable range. Published figures are conditional and do not account for every site, correction link, control coordinate, or measurement method. Trimble’s RTK guidance describes factors that affect results.
Site environment Expected obstructions, multipath risks, and the quality of the base or network connection where work occurs. Obstructions can reduce satellite visibility; reflective surroundings can contribute to multipath.
Correction workflow Local base or network RTK, coverage, communications, control tie, and daily operating routine. RTK requires correction data at the rover; correction availability and the data link are part of the system.
Controller and software Supported signals and correction formats, exact hardware/software compatibility, and required data outputs. A receiver must fit the crew’s field workflow and project handoff, not just its antenna specification.
Tilt compensation Sensor workflow, setup or calibration instructions, pole-height entry, and fallback when RTK conditions are difficult. Tilt can help measure without leveling the pole, but incorrect setup can compromise measurements.
Field practicality and support Base/rover flexibility, ingress protection, weight, battery life, storage, and service arrangements for the specific configuration. These affect whether the equipment suits the site and crew’s operating routine. Manufacturer specifications can vary by model and configuration.
Coordinate references and checks Horizontal datum and realization/epoch as applicable; vertical datum, geoid model, units, localization, and project control. Reference settings must match the deliverable, and field checks are needed to validate the setup.

For example, Trimble’s integrated GNSS product page describes different antenna configurations and lists model-specific details such as battery, storage, ingress protection, weight, and tilt-related capabilities. Treat these as manufacturer descriptions; confirm the current configuration and availability for your location directly with the vendor: Trimble integrated GNSS systems.

Choose a correction source and communications plan

For RTK, the rover needs corrections from either a local base station or a network of base stations. The choice depends on correction availability, communication, project control, coverage, and the crew’s operating routine—not simply on receiver capability.

Local base station

A project base provides a local correction source and can tie observations to project control. Its coordinates, antenna environment, sky view, communication path, and distance to rover work all matter. Trimble recommends an open environment for a base station and notes that inaccurate base coordinates degrade the rover solution. Review its base station operation guidelines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network RTK

A network service can provide corrections without the crew deploying a project base, provided that the service covers the work area and communications are available. Topcon describes Topnet Live as a correction service for survey and construction positioning without a base station. Coverage, terms, supported equipment, and performance depend on the area and service; confirm them with the provider and check that the client’s control requirements allow the workflow. See Topcon’s bases and rovers information.

Understand the conditions behind RTK performance

RTK results depend on more than the receiver. Trimble’s technical guidance identifies base-coordinate quality, atmospheric effects, baseline distance, obstructions, multipath, and radio interference as factors. It states that at least five common satellites must be tracked at both base and rover for RTK initialization. Longer base-to-rover distances can degrade accuracy and increase initialization time; there is no single distance limit that applies to every receiver and site. Check the operating ranges attached to the model’s specification and the conditions behind any quoted accuracy: Critical factors affecting RTK accuracy.

Ask what correction source and range the quoted figure assumes, and how the crew will check the setup locally. A displayed solution status or a specification sheet is not independent proof that a point meets the project tolerance.

Evaluate tilt compensation as a complete workflow

Tilt compensation can save time and help reach points where the pole cannot be held plumb. It does not eliminate the need for correct setup. Trimble Access documentation says the antenna height and selected measurement method must be correct when measuring or staking with IMU tilt compensation. It also advises that tilt may need to be switched off in very difficult RTK conditions. Compare the exact sensor workflow, initialization or calibration instructions, height-entry method, and practical fallback process using the Trimble Access 2025.20 IMU tilt compensation documentation.

Product material may describe working without leveling the pole as a benefit; use the operating documentation to understand the conditions and setup required for that benefit. For an example of a vendor specification, Trimble describes the R780 as configurable as a base, rover, or both and advertises “RTK + 8 mm + 0.5 mm/° tilt.” That is a vendor specification, not an independently verified or universally attainable result; its meaning depends on the manufacturer’s test conditions and system configuration. See Trimble R780.

Match coordinate and height references to the deliverable

GNSS positions are tied to a coordinate reference. Orthometric elevations require relating ellipsoid heights to a geoid model. U.S. Geological Survey guidance for its publication series calls for documenting the vertical datum and geoid model used for orthometric heights, and says the horizontal datum realization and epoch may also need to be stated. Those recommendations do not replace the survey contract, jurisdictional requirements, or client control specifications. Consult the USGS guidance on documenting horizontal and vertical datums.

Before collecting layout points, confirm the project’s coordinate system, relevant horizontal datum realization and epoch, vertical reference, geoid model, units, localization or site calibration, and control. Two crews using the same familiar datum label may still have different settings; the documented reference and project checks are what make their work comparable.

Plan field checks and setup discipline

Make verification part of the workflow, with its rigor matched to the job’s tolerance. USGS field guidance recommends fixed-height tripods for survey-grade GNSS and says rover poles should be fixed height or consistently set and measured for verification. It warns that “Inappropriate offsets can introduce up to 10 cm of error in survey results.” This is a warning about field practice, not a general accuracy figure for modern receivers. See USGS Global Positioning Application and Practice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USGS technical guidance emphasizes checks and redundancy as quality measures, and identifies field preparation such as loading control coordinates, survey lines, and the current geoid model into the data collector. Its methods are specific to its survey context, but the selection implication is broadly useful: choose equipment and software that support the checks and records your project requires. See USGS Techniques and Methods 11-D1.

  • Verify pole or antenna height, measurement method, offsets, and base coordinates before relying on points.
  • Check known control and use redundant observations appropriate to the required quality.
  • Record the setup and reference information needed to reproduce and review the work.
  • Confirm that the project’s controller contains the required control, survey lines, and geoid model.

Make the purchase decision

  1. Define the tolerance and deliverable. Record horizontal and vertical requirements, control, work type, and field conditions.
  2. Select the correction route. Establish whether a local base or network RTK can provide corrections reliably where the crew will work.
  3. Check the complete field stack. Confirm receiver, controller, software, correction formats, communications, and data outputs work together for the exact models and releases.
  4. Review setup-sensitive features. For tilt compensation and base/rover configurations, verify procedures, operating limits, and fallback methods in the relevant manuals.
  5. Confirm references and quality checks. Match datum, geoid, units, and control requirements to the contract, and plan how field observations will be checked and documented.
  6. Compare practical ownership factors. Evaluate battery life, storage, ruggedness, weight, support, and current regional availability for the configurations being considered.

A buyer-facing guide also frames the decision as working outward from the task through correction route, controller/software, environment, and deliverable; it can be read at TOKNAV’s GNSS RTK receiver guide. For the technical decision, however, project specifications, applicable manuals, control requirements, and verified local service coverage should determine the final fit.
