The recipient can accept from the email or from Google Home’s Inbox. Each person should use their own Google Account; do not share your password.
Before you send an invitation
- You must already have a Google Home home and be signed in to the Google Account that manages it.
- If you have several homes, select the intended home first. Check its name and device list so you do not invite someone to a vacation home, office or other location by mistake.
- The recipient needs an eligible personal Google Account. A Google Workspace work or school account cannot be invited through the standard home-member flow.
- Google recommends using a phone or tablet connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the home devices while completing setup.
- Home membership and a Google Family Group are separate. Google may offer to add the person to your Family Group during the invitation, but you can decline that offer.
See Google’s current requirements and permissions at Manage people and permissions in the Google Home app.
How to invite someone to your Google Home
- Open the Google Home app.
- At the top, select the home you want to share. Use the account or profile control to switch homes if necessary.
- Tap Add, then Home member.
- Enter the person’s name or the email address for their Google Account, then tap Next.
- Choose Admin or Member.
- If you choose Member, review the Settings and Activity permissions and enable only what the person needs.
- Tap Next, then Invite or Send.
- If Google asks whether to add the person to your Google Family Group, choose Invite or No thanks. This choice does not replace the home invitation.
Google occasionally changes labels by app version, operating system or account state. If the wording differs, look for the equivalent Home member control under Add.
Admin or Member: which access is appropriate?
Choose access by the tasks and privacy exposure involved, not simply by whether someone is a relative.

| Role | What it is for | Important access and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Admin | A fully trusted co-manager of the home | Can generally manage people, devices, home and device settings, shared services and subscriptions, presence-sensing settings, and home data; can delete the home. |
| Member | Someone who needs everyday control without full administration | Gets basic device control. You can separately allow Settings and/or Activity access. |
What the Member permissions mean
- Settings: broader control of home and device settings. This may be enough for a housemate who needs to adjust a thermostat or routines without managing membership.
- Activity: access to home-wide activity where applicable, including device events, camera history or presence history. Treat this as sensitive permission in homes with cameras, locks or alarms.
A Member is not automatically isolated from private information. Camera views and history, lock controls, presence information, home address features and linked media services can be sensitive; review permissions before sending the invite.
How the invited family member accepts
From the email
The recipient opens Google’s invitation email, signs in to the invited Google Account and follows the join instructions.
From the Google Home app
- Open Google Home and tap the recipient’s profile picture or initials.
- Open Inbox.
- Tap the pending home invitation.
- Review what will be shared and tap Agree & join.
- Create a private nickname for the home if Google prompts for one.
Google may ask the recipient to connect to the home’s Wi-Fi and reopen Google Home to finish Assistant setup for devices on that network.
Set up Voice Match and personal results
Joining the home does not automatically make Assistant recognize the new person or show that person’s private information. The invited person should configure these settings on their own account:

- Hands-Free Voice Assistant – With Google Assistant built in, control music, get answers, set timers, check the weather, and control smart home devices with simple voice commands.
- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Connectivity – Stream your favorite music from services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and more via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Works with Android, iOS, and Chromecast-enabled apps.
- Smart Home Ready – Nest Audio integrates with thousands of compatible smart home devices – use your voice to dim lights, control thermostats, lock doors, and more.
- Voice Match for voice-based personalization.
- Face Match on supported displays.
- Personal results for calendars, reminders, contacts and other account-specific responses.
Review linked media services as well: some connected services may become available to everyone in the home.
Inviting a child supervised with Family Link
Child accounts follow different rules. Children under 13, or under the applicable digital-consent age in their country, receive Member access by default. Settings and Activity permissions are automatically disabled, and a child cannot create a home.
- Only a parent with the required permission in the relevant Family Link group can invite the child’s Google Account.
- Some Digital Wellbeing, YouTube, Familiar Face and Sleep Sensing controls may be unavailable to children.
- For some device-linking situations, the parent must join the home first and then add the child’s account to the device.
Adding a child to a Google Family Group alone does not grant access to the Google Home home; send the separate home invitation. Google’s parental-control information is available in Set up parental controls and Digital Wellbeing.
If the invitation is missing or fails
- Wrong home: switch to the intended home and verify its name and devices before resending.
- Wrong account: confirm the exact Google Account email used by the recipient, then check Google Home’s Inbox as well as email.
- Existing request: if the person already requested to join, accept that request instead of sending another invitation.
- Workspace account: use a personal Google Account; Workspace accounts are not supported by the standard home-member flow.
- Family Group confusion or capacity: Google documents up to six people for a Google Family Group and describes up to six home members in relevant Home flows. These are separate limits and should not be treated as a universal limit for every Google product.
- Authentication or authorization error: the person may not yet be a member of the home linked to the shared Assistant-enabled device. Invite them, have them accept, and complete setup. See Google’s authentication-error guidance.
- Joined but cannot control a feature: check whether they are a Member, whether Settings or Activity was enabled, whether the product is managed in the Nest app, whether Wi-Fi and Assistant setup is complete, and whether child-account restrictions apply.
Removing someone later
An Admin can remove another person from the home. Google notifies the removed person and they lose access to the home’s devices and services. Some categories, including Google smart speakers and displays, streaming devices, Google Wifi and Nest Wifi, remain available to the people who stay in the home.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Remove former household members promptly, especially when the home includes cameras, locks, alarms, Wi-Fi or paid subscriptions.
If you need to leave the home yourself
Go to Google Home → profile picture or initials → Home settings → Leave this home. If you are the last Admin, Google may offer to delete the home instead. Deleting the only home can delete associated home data.

For homes managed with a Google Account, use Google Home for member management. A legacy, non-migrated Nest Account may still expose the Nest app’s Family & Guests controls, including older roles such as Owner, Full Access and Home Entry Only. Home Entry Only can be useful for a Nest × Yale Lock when someone needs lock/unlock entry but not control of other Nest products.
Do not mix the old Nest-app roles with Google Home’s Admin and Member roles. Product availability and controls can differ by account migration status. See Family Accounts and sharing access to a Nest home and Managing homes and products with the Nest app.

Frequently asked questions
Can I invite someone without making them an Admin?
Yes. Choose Member and enable Settings or Activity only when needed.
Does a home invitation add the person to my Google Family Group?
No. Family Group membership is a separate, optional offer in the invitation flow.
Can I invite a work or school Google account?
Not through the standard Google Home home-member process; use an eligible personal Google Account.
Will the new person automatically get Voice Match?
No. They must set up Voice Match, Face Match where supported, and personal results on their own account.
Can I share only a Nest lock?
Legacy Nest accounts may offer Home Entry Only for a Nest × Yale Lock. For a Google Home-managed home, weigh whether full home membership exposes more devices and data than necessary.
